This sounds like a parody of "Ballad of Mary Magdalene" by Richard Shindell.

Acorn4: It's a parody (in the folkie sense of the word) of the Sunday-school hymn "Jesus Loves Me":

Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong:
We are weak, but He is strong, etc.

The "Ballad of Mary Magdalene" is self-parodying (in the literary sense of the word), IMO. "It was his career or mine"!
