We are considering a trip across Canada (Vancouver to Halifax), and would appreciate some suggestions. Best time of year? Canrailpass or just tickets? Worth the extra $$ for a private compartment? Places to stop and see along the way?

October. Pass (check on packages.) Yes, worth every penny. Too many to mention.

But, more info will unfold as the thread progresses.

My Mother and Sister did that a couple of years ago in the Autum, they said it was fantastic. I'd love to do the same thing! Prefably with a Royal Hudson barking away at the front!

Wassail!! Chris

Whatever you do Art, take the trip with BUSTER KEATON first. He made that just a couple of years before he died. Read the write-up on Amazon. If you loved the silents, Buster still had it and the first time I saw this, I died laughing.

Buster... my favourite! I was thrilled a while back. Severn sent me a package. Amongst other stuff, some Buster. What a hoot.

Judging from a U.S. cross-country train trip a couple years ago -- if you're going overnight, especially more than one night, a sleeper is a necessity.

Also, bring a book for the miles and miles and miles and miles of spruce across Ontario.

It's a trip my folks always dreamed of... sounded good to me, too. (We ended up driving much of it a couple of times.)

Becky... good advice. But, perhaps, by using a map and the schedules, one might circumvent the "spruce" by taking a train over such areas at night?

I AM an idea man.

the ONLY way i would recommend taking the train across Canada is with
http://www.flyingunderradar.com/ Charlie Hunter's Roots on the Rails moving music festivals are an experience of a lifetime. I went from
Vancouver to Toronto in the fall of 2006 with the Cowboy Train. A musical journey that could not be beat! there were 75 passengers on our special cars at the end of th eregular train, and 50 of us made music. We had concerts each night and jams each afternoon. plus a
special concert at either end of the trip (on "land")

Charlie also manages train trips on the narrow guage rr in the rocky mts of colorado new mexico and arizona, as well as a musical train trip down into the copper canyon of mexico

this movie is a cult classic...www.festivalexpress.com/
