The Johnson Girls - Deirdre Murtha, Alison Kelley, Joy Bennett and Bonnie Milner - will be performing a sea music concert on Saturday, November 14, 8pm, aboard the 1886 Glasgow-built sailing ship Balclutha, berthed at Hyde Street Pier, on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. The concert is sponsored by San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, National Park Service.

Captivated by seafaring songs at different times in their lives, they came together following the 1997 Mystic Seaport Sea music Festival to burst through the barrier of this previously male-dominated genre. Since then, they have taken the sea music world by storm with their powerhouse renditions of chanteys and their tender performances of seafaring ballads.

Tickets are $14 general, $12 SF Maritime Ntl. Park Association and Maritime Library Friends members. and can be purchased online at http://www.maritime.org, or by calling 415-561-6662, ext. 33, or in person at The Maritime Store, at the entrance to Hyde Street Pier. Store open daily, 9:30am-5:30pm.

Those of you who have seen them perform at venues such as Mystic, at South Street Seaport, and in previous San Francisco visits and other venues here and abroad, already know what a fantastic group they are. If you haven't seen them perform, you're in for a great discovery. Come see them in this intimate wateront setting!

If you get the opportunity, ask Bonny to sing "Cornish Lads". You will not regret it.

Having attended a concert on the Balclutha while on vacation in San Francisco a few years ago, I would also like to add that it is a wonderful setting for this kind of music and great fun to be in the park after dark. As a fan of The Johnson Girls, I urge anyone who can get to this to go!

As of yesterday, ticket sales are at 83, with a limit of 110. reserve your ticket soon, as the pace of reservations quickens as the week goes on, and a good many walk-up sales are expected (if still available) due to their radio appearance earlier that day. As Charley Noble say's - not to be missed!

The concert did sell out, and what a great concert it was (no surprise there)! They brought to their repertoire some newer material...newer to them, that is, including an Italian fisherman's song, led by Bonnie Milner, who is of Italian heritage. The next night, Bonnie and Alison Kelley sang at the Starry Plough Irish Pub's regular Sunday night session, run by Shay Black (Deirdre and Joy had to fly back home). A bunch of singers converged at the Plough that night, including Oak, Ash and Thorn (Mudcatter Dave Swan's trio), Mudcatters Salty Walt and Jim Partridge, Bay Area newcomer Andrus Nichols, and many others. A perfect capper to a great weekend.
