Somebody was recently asking about the abbreviations we use. Here are some of the more common ones for your convenience.

IMO - In my opinion IMHO - In my honest opinion LOL - Laughing out loud ROFL - Rolling on the floor LMAOROFL - Laughing my ass off, rolling on the floor BTW - By the way

And here are a few that we probably should have at the Mudcat, since we use them so often:

CWGBTTMT - Can we get back to the main topic?
IKABVOTS - I know a better version of that song
THGAOOAT - There he goes again, off on another tangent
GMIDMITW - Gee Max, I didn't mean it that way
DIMUTHOTLM - Dammit I messed up the HTML on that last message
IWTTHASC - I wish this thing had a spell check
IHASCOA - I have a secret crush on Alice

Anybody have any more I might have left out?

BBS=Be back soon..or BBL=Be back later
RTI=real time interruption

RT & VT are conventions refering to Real Time..like what calls you back to work just as you are getting involved throughly in VT..Virtual Time...which is the time you spend at the Mudcat Tavern or campfire..(and ain't it easy to get 'em confused!?)

This is as good a place as any to reveal, at long last, and after many secret trials at various bases in the desert, the secret Mudcat salute. Here goes. Imagine for a moment that you have your hands in position to imitate mouse ears. Now wiggle your fingers. Now tilt you hands forward. Move your hands down your face until they are just above your mouth and aligned with both cheeks. At this point you are ready to begin the Mudcat salute. Orient your hands slightly outward, and wiggle the fingers of both hands like a catfish. Voila!!!!! The Mudcat Salute.
yours, Peter T.

It's great fun to talk about these acronyms in this thread, but I hope they don't get used too much in the rest of the forum. I think they tend to exclude those of us who don't understand them or don't think quick enough to figure them out.
Personally, I don't even like the BS or NOI labels that have been bandied about lately - it seems the writers who use these labels have assumed permission to be disgusting or insulting. If you have the masterful humor of a Catspaw or an Art Thieme, you can say just about anything gracefully. The rest of us mere mortals have to be a little more careful - and the BS and NOI labels don't really protect us.

But Joe, I think the thread has crept to getting naked during the Fielding show...........

But I gotta' agree with you in a way and "my" abbreviations above were meant as an example.......I can never figure out about 90% of the things because ...... well hell, I don't know why, I guess I'm just ignernt. It helps when I learn the more common ones (the original idea of this thread) but they keep expanding and my gray matter is dwindling.

Now about the Fielding show..........Hmmm, maybe a thread.

Subject: RE: Handy Abbreviatons

Hi, Jeri - There's something about the use of the label "BS" in thread titles that doesn't feel quite right, and I can't put my finger on exactly why it bothers me. I do know that I if go to the Forum Menu and the majority of threads that appear on my screen have that "BS" designation, I get the feeling that things are out of balance, and I can pretty well predict that trouble is brewing. It's fine to chit-chat and goof around here. The intelligent humor that's often found here is wonderful. However, when that chit-chat and humor lacks substance or becomes nasty, there's a problem. Warning people off with a "BS" label isn't enough. Even when we're goofing off, we shouldn't be posting garbage.

NOI is supposed to mean "no offense intended." Trouble is, it can get misused. That sort of thing is fine if it's honest, and if no offense is intended. If the remark IS offensive, the harm will be done, with or without the label. Poison is poison, even if you put a label on it that says it's harmless.

I hope this doesn't start a whole new battle. That's not what I want to do - think of this as a "gentle suggestion" that maybe we'd be better off without the BS and NOI labels.
-Joe Offer-

I agree that the lable "BS" ought to be dropped. What does it look like to newcomers? Kind of strange or nasty, I would think.

Let's face it. We know the non-musical threads aren't going to go away. Why designate them at all? Heck, some of the pure musical threads have me guessing by their titles as to whether they are musical or not. So Why not just click and see? No lables.

All that is just IMHO!
