Subject: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Folkiedave Date: 11 Nov 09 - 03:57 PM I have just been listening to the new Kerfuffle record which is absolutely superb. I thoroughly recommend the record and if they are playing near you go see. If you haven't come across them before then they have been going a few years, and Sam Sweeney also plays in Bellowhead (he's the piper and fiddle player that stands next to Paul Sartin). There are a number of well known carols by Hannah James who also plays accordion and some not so well-known ones (Bitter Withy and Cherry Tree carol are well-known I would think, Lullay my Liking not so well-known). But whilst the record is really good - they are a band best appreciated live. And listen carefully to the arrangements - they are quality. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Rasener Date: 11 Nov 09 - 04:04 PM The new kerfuffle CD!!! I am confused. Is this a cd from Kerfuffle or Sam Sweeney and Hannah James? We have Kerfuffle making a return visit to Faldingworth Live on June 5th 2010. Such is their popularity. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Reinhard Date: 11 Nov 09 - 04:56 PM Villan, Sam Sweeney and Hannah James' CD Catches and Glees was release three months ago; I don't know of any newer CD by them. According to Kerfuffle's website, their CD Lighten the Dark: A Midwinter Album was released on November 2. I'm hoping to get it from my CD store soon... And Folkiedave, I'd really like to see them live too; they must be a blast. But I haven't found them touring the other side of the Channel yet. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Folkiedave Date: 11 Nov 09 - 05:06 PM They have been abroad - both times to Sardinia I think. The second time they were supporting Lunasa. And Les, I was referring to "Lighten the Dark" not to "Catches and Glees" by Hannah and Sam. Full weight fourpiece band in great form with Lilly Neill (superb harpist) and Andy Letcher (brilliant piper) on some of the tracks. It is spefically a Xmas album |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Rasener Date: 11 Nov 09 - 05:15 PM Ah Noel Dave. Glad to see you are on the ball me matey :-) |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Bernard Date: 11 Nov 09 - 07:35 PM Quite right! The current tour is based upon the new album. I'm doing support for Kerfuffle (yet again!) in a couple of weeks (27th November at the North Cheshire Cruising Club), and have persuaded Sam to talk to us by telephone on Oldham Community Radio 99.7fm on Monday evening (16th), probably around 1910. I'm also hoping to have a track from the new album to play. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Dave Sutherland Date: 12 Nov 09 - 02:59 AM Personally I think that "Lighten The Dark" is the best thing that they have done to date. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Hamish Date: 12 Nov 09 - 04:10 AM Ahah! Just got tickets for the missus and younger daughter (who don't normally do folk) and sis-in-law and her hubby for the Aylesbury gig at the end of the month. Plus I'll see them at Forest Folk near Southampton in mid-December. Big :-) |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Folkiedave Date: 12 Nov 09 - 04:31 AM That's an interesting comment Dave - I think there is something special about it too. I wouldn't normally post stuff like this but on this case I think it is merited. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Dave Sutherland Date: 12 Nov 09 - 07:15 AM I'm thinking of other recordings in the field of Carols, seasonal and ritual songs such as "Frost and Fire", "All Bells in Paradise", "Maypoles to Mistletoe" and "For Pence and Spicy Ale" all of which can be considered classic folk albums. After numerous plays of "Lighten The Dark" I can see no good reason why Kerfuffle's album should not join this elite list. The only danger that I can see is that amid the hoo-ha surrounding all the major names producing seasonal albums at the moment this gem could get overlooked. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Folkiedave Date: 13 Nov 09 - 03:09 AM I am doing my best to make sure it doesn't. And I agree - it should join those classics. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: GUEST Date: 13 Nov 09 - 04:32 AM Couldn't agree more. This is a superb album. If you've not heard it yet, it looks like they've put a couple of tracks up on their MySpace site at http://www.myspace.com/kerfufflemusic I agree entirely with Dave, if you get the chance to see them perform this lot live, it will be an evening very well spent |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Rasener Date: 13 Nov 09 - 04:56 AM Have just listened to them. Kerfuffle just get better and better. Great rhythm. Just wonderful. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Ian Hendrie Date: 14 Nov 09 - 11:53 AM |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: GUEST Date: 14 Nov 09 - 11:57 AM Tour details appear to be up on their web site at www.kerfuffleonline.co.uk Seems thay have dates around the East Midlands, South Yorkshire and a couple of forays out into other places including Cheshire, the Wirral, West Yorkshire, Bucks and Hampshire. Actually, that's more than a couple, it really is a tour! Heartily recommend seeing them live. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Ian Hendrie Date: 15 Nov 09 - 12:34 PM My previous comments seem to have got lost in the ether! I whole heartedly agree with all the positive comments about the latest album. The performance in Cheshire is a charity fund-raiser at North Cheshire Cruising Club, High Lane, Stockport (Friday 27th November). This is followed on Saturday (28th) by another charity fund-raiser featuring Grant Baynham, Zoe Mulford and The Hometowners. Why not make a weekend of it? Good moorings for visitors by canal. |

Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Hamish Date: 26 Nov 09 - 04:22 AM Perplexingly, I think there are still tickets available for the Aylesbury gig on Saturday. Great, great band and a lovely venue: The Queen's Park Centre is folk-club sized (I think 120 seats) but the seats are all banked up so every seat has good sight-lines. Such a lovely atmosphere always there. ~8^) |

Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Hamish Date: 30 Nov 09 - 04:34 AM The gig at Aylesbury was tremendous. The sound was superb and they were on fire. Totally excellent. And the CD is fabulous, too. Even my folknostic missus loved the gig and loves the CD. Unreservedly recommended. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Bernard Date: 30 Nov 09 - 11:43 AM Simmo has put lots of stuff on YouTube from Friday's gig, which was the first in the 'Lighten the Dark' tour. That's me yelling 'Kerfuffle' at the start of the clip...! Sam admitted it was the first time he'd had serious misgivings about a gig - every song and tune was new, rather than just the odd one or two. They carried it off with the usual professionalism, though. |

Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Folkiedave Date: 11 Dec 09 - 03:39 AM I went to the Chesterfield show last night. It really is as good as everyone says and special thanks to Andy Bell on sound. IT cannot be easy sorting the sound out in a huge high-roofed place like that, and it was top really top quality. And they are really good. |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Bernard Date: 12 Dec 09 - 06:10 PM Get it right, lad... he's been re-christened Andy 'Sweet Chiming' Bell for this tour!! ;o> |

Lily plays on three tracks of the Kerfuffle seasonal CD Lighten the Dark which they will be performing together. Don't miss this - it will be something extra special |
Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Folkiedave Date: 14 Dec 09 - 05:36 AM Indeed - I have been fortunate enough to catch Lilly's playing. Please do go and see her and the rest of the gang. I wished I lived closer. |

Subject: RE: Review: Kerfuffle Latest Album and Tour From: Hamish Date: 22 Dec 09 - 04:38 AM Ah. Quite a lot of snow in Hampshire last night. I gave up trying to get to the Kerfuffle gig down the M3 after queueing for 40 minutes to get half a mile closer to the motorway before turning round for home. Good decision as it turned out, because Jamie was someway ahead of me on the motorway and only got to Forest Folk for 23.10. Apparently there'd been up to ten inches of snow in Basingstoke that afternoon. All the more glad I saw their wonderful gig in Aylesbury. |
