I am looking for a programme that will allow me to plug in a midi keyboard play a tune and the programme writes it in normal musical notation.I know Sibelius can do it, but I was looking for something much, much cheaper - preferably free!

Any ideas?

I don't use MIDI keyboards, so haven't used them to enter notes, but I have found a couple of free programmes useful for producing sheet music. They all do things differently, and one can offer functions that another doesn't have, so it can be worth installing more than one.
Have a look at these :-
MuseScore
NoteEdit which is being replaced by
Canorus
Denemo

I can't recall which does what!

Some will export data as MusicXML which can be read by other music typesetting programmes, so you can start using one programme, then finish your editing with a different one.
Most of them also will oputput ABC format (but not import it). ABC is useful for sharing tunes via the web or on mudcat.

There are various threads on Mudcat discussing music programmes. Some contain interesting and informative info, so it is worth doing a forum search.

Quack!

Finale PrintMusic does this, but I'm not wild about its editing capabilities, particularly in fixing or adjusting timing.
