Subject: Lyr Req: No fooling, who do you love?
From: GUEST

I wish I could find the lyrics to a song my father used to sing. Here's what I remember:

No fooling,
Who do you love?
Who are you thinking of?
No fooling.

No fooling,
Who do you miss?
When we start to kiss.
No fooling.

I regret I can't be of any help with more lyrics for this song but my old friend Oscar 'Red' Wilson from Ledger, North Carolina used to sing this in combination with the song "All about You". He would sing the lyrics of "All about you" and a female partner would join him on the "No Fooling" lyrics shown above as a chorus. I taped him on two or three occasions doing this at picking sessions at his home. I don't believe that it was ever recorded commercially in this way but it is very effective. I have Doc Watson's version of "All about you" and as much as I enjoy it I always miss the "No Fooling" addition.

Here's my transcription from the recording at The Red Hot Jazz Archive by Cliff Edwards ("Ukulele Ike").

They also have recordings by The California Ramblers and by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, but those don't have all the verses this one does:

NO FOOLIN'
Gene Buck, James F. Hanley
From "Ziegfeld's American Revue of 1926"

No foolin',
No ifs ands or buts,
This song is the nuts,
No foolin'.

There's a certain sweetie I just love and adore,
The most attractive girl I've ever found:
Pretty, sentimental, personality galore,
But she's always foolin' around.
You can see the moonbeams dancin' in her eyes,
Captivating, fascinating dear.
Her foolin' keeps me guessin'. She can tantalize.
You can hear me singin' when she's near:

No foolin',
Who do you love?
Who are you thinking of?
No foolin'.

No foolin',
Who do you miss
When it's time to kiss?
No foolin'.

I wonder
Who you really think you'll marry.
Don't blunder
With some Tom or Dick or Harry.

No foolin',
Chase me instead,
But after we're wed,
No foolin'.

[Scat break]

No foolin',
You'll be the boss,
And that's no applesauce,
No foolin'.

No foolin',
I'll bring home my pay
Ev'ry Saturday,
No foolin'.

I'll make
A promise not to give you orders
We'll have
A great big house and take in boarders

No foolin'.
We'll make it pay,
But when I'm away,
No foolin'.

No foolin',
We'll rent a place
Where there's plenty of space,
No foolin'.

No foolin'.
We'll bill and coo
Like real sweethearts do,
No foolin'.

We'll never
Have a quarrel or a fuss, dear
Forever
Happiness will follow us, dear.

No foolin'.
I'll stand for jokes
But not from your folks
No foolin'.

My mother recorded this song when she was in a band in Louisiana called The Sunshine Boys.
