Subject: Jim Lee - R.I.P
From: GUEST,The Wilson Family
Date: 15 Nov 09 - 08:25 AM

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the sad news that Jim Lee died, after a long illnes, on Friday 13th November. To many Jim was not that well known by his surname but, was widely known as one half of 'Jim & Jean from Leeds'.
He was a stallwart of the grass routes Folk Scene for well over thirty years and a good friend of ours for all of that time. Until relatively recently, along with Jean, he regularly travelled extensively to both clubs & festivals and made many, many friends along the way. He came to singing late but had a lovely voice and a great repertoire of songs but, most of all, he was just a lovely man and will be greatly missed.
We'll post details of arrangements etc. on this thread as soon as we get to know

yes sad news,I remember them both well.
I remember Jim coming up to me at Sutton Bonington, and praising my singing of a song, what he actually said was that I went up a gear,so he was kind of telling me,I should work a bit harder too, typical Jim. they were both of them lovely friendly people.

Jim never really recovered from losing Jean - they were such a close couple and their only son lives in America. They both took to the folk scene relatively late but it became their family and their main occupation.

Both, in their younger days, had been involved in the theatre in Leeds - where they met . Jean being on stage as a dancer and Jim being her make-up man and dresser.

We've lost too many stalwarts and friends of the folk scene this year -- it's just so sad.

Sorry to hear this news. Jean and Jim were stalwarts of the singarounds at Cleethorpes and Saddleworth...and I also used to meet up with them at various other festivals. He had a wicked sense of humour and a few great lines for puting down the pompous. As Hazel said,I don't think he really got over the loss of Jean...they complemented each other so well.
RIP mate.

So sorry to hear about Jim's death. Jim and Jean were a lovely couple. I wondered why I hadn't seen Jim 'around' this year. A gentleman who will be sadly missed.

On behalf of Jim's family, thanks to everyone for your comments so far. I'd like to ask Hazel (and others) if you could do me the favour of letting other friends know by e-mail or whatever 'cause you're so much better at this 'techno' stuff than I am. We are hoping to find out more details this evening when Jim's son gets over from the U.S. and I'll post it here when I get to know. - Thanks, Tom

Jean and Jim were stalwarts, loved all the Wilson Family and the festivals as Old Git, Geoff Turner says were devoured!!

The Band in the Park, from Alan Bell also a favourite of Jim's

That place in the sky is getting full and the rafters must be ringing already

It was good know you Jim (and Jean)

What a lovely man Jim was, this is very sad news. We remember Jim with his wife Jean, along with their close friends Des and Barbara at the early Redditch Festivals many years ago.
Our thoughts are with the family, R.I.P. Jim.

Unfortunately I'll be up in Edinburgh carless on 26 Nov,but I'll be there in spirit. No doubt the band in the park will play an old fashioned waltz for this fine old Yorkshire gentleman.

I've passed the news on to as many people as I can.

Sad news. Jim was a "fine old Yorkshire gentleman" indeed, and he and Jean were always a real delight to encounter at festivals everywhere.
Unfortunately I'll not be able to make the funeral, but he'll be in my thoughts. Rest in peace, Jim.

We've read that one or two friends have noted that they won't be able to attend Jim's funeral and unfortunately, nor will Meg & I as we'll be on holiday. Our Chris & Anne will also not be there 'cause of his hip-op but hopefully , most of the rest of the family will be going.
It would be helpfull if anyone who is intending to go could put a post here so that we can inform Jim's family - Thanks T & M

We are getting fewer ther used to be eight Dez and Barbara Nicholson, George and Joan Gallimore, Jim and Jean Lee, Maureen and I. We would get together at Festivals like Redcar, Cleethorpes,Fleetwood usually on Saturday for tea. We would invade a cafe and move the furniture so we could all sit together and be generally disruptive in a friendly way. I think the last time we were together was at our tent at Warwick. Now sadly Dez, George, Jean and Jim are gone but the rest of us as Churchill would say will keep buggering-on. I think after Jim lost Jean he must have thought his work was done. (no one one to tell him off when he wasn't all tucked in and tidy). Jean, Jim, Maureen and I used to stay at the Whickham at Cleckheaton and we would share a table for meals. They were great to have in a singaround as well as the songs mentioned in previous posts Jim did very good versions of Brave Wolve and Life of a Man. But i still think his best song was Fine Old Yorkshire Gentleman.
Farewell Old friend go find your Jean, A Fine Old Lady and a Fine Old Yorkshire Gentleman
