Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: Fiolar Date: 16 Nov 09 - 08:08 AM Sadly another great one gone. I'll never forget him as "Callan" and he made marvellous movies. "The Wicker Man" (1973) and "Breaker Morant" (1978) based on the life of Harry Morant (1865 - 1902), English born Australian soldier. One of his most famous lines in that film was when he was asked what rule did he use he replied "Rule 303 bloody 3". At peace. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: Fiolar Date: 16 Nov 09 - 08:10 AM Sorry: He said "Rule 30 bloody 3". |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: Phil Cooper Date: 16 Nov 09 - 08:36 AM I, too, really liked The Equalizer. Breaker Morant was also a fine film. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: gnomad Date: 16 Nov 09 - 08:37 AM It is mostly for Breaker Morant that I will remember him; absolutely convincing, though you could always rely on him for a decent performance. He had a good singing voice too, as demonstrated in more than one of his films. I find that there are a few certain actors whose presence in a cast list will draw me to something I might not otherwise have chosen, because I know they will rarely touch rubbish. He was one of that group. Sorry to see him gone. BBC Obit here |

Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: alanabit Date: 16 Nov 09 - 02:09 PM Like most others here, I recall first seeing him in Callan. Breaker Morant was excellent and he also led the cast in a fine futuristic drama, which was set in a Fascist Britain. I believe his character was called "Kyle" or something like that. He was a fine actor and I am sad to hear of his passing. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: kendall Date: 16 Nov 09 - 02:44 PM One of my favorites, and Breaker Morant is on my very short list of great films. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: kendall Date: 16 Nov 09 - 02:56 PM I was also very impressed with Jack Thompson, the defense attorney. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 16 Nov 09 - 02:56 PM Ahh, I'm afraid whatever other good works he's done, he'll be forever cast as Summerisle's Sacrificial King for a Day for me. What a pity the prudes at YouTube can't cope with a pair of titties.. Virginal Woodward, utterly beside himself with physical desire at 3:18, is priceless. Willow's Song |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: robomatic Date: 16 Nov 09 - 03:26 PM I liked him in everything in which he appeared. Never saw the Callans but they were described to me as humorous and entertaining. Loved Wicker Man and Breaker Morant. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: Will Fly Date: 16 Nov 09 - 03:29 PM He was also superb as an elderly refuse collector in a BBC series in the 80s - an excellent straight actor. RIP |

Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: Surreysinger Date: 16 Nov 09 - 05:30 PM Sad news - it brought back memories for me of sitting in the TV lounge at college in Aberystwyth in the 70's at one in the morning with my best friend Vida and watching Callan; of watching the Equalizer (I have the videos of the series, and was in the process of transferring them to DVD to watch only last week); of Breaker Morant - a stunning film; of his singing, and of watching him and one of his sons in a historical play here in Guildford (written by Rosemary Sissons) ... and more recently of the pair of them in an episode of "Crusade" , a spinoff from Babylon 5. An actor for all seasons ... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor From: Dave Roberts Date: 16 Nov 09 - 08:11 PM I'm very sad to hear of the death of Edward Woodward. I remember him from 'Callan' in the sixties and, of course, from 'The Wicker Man',a film which still fascinates me after many viewings. A sad loss. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Edward Woodward UK Actor (Nov 2009) From: GUEST,StephW Date: 17 Nov 09 - 09:32 PM I remember Callan with fondness - I had a huge crush on Edward Woodward as Callan in the late 60s. Breaker Morant and Wicker Man were both excellent, too. I have an LP of Edward singing as Sidney Carton in the musical stage show "A tale of two cities" - I recently transferred it to CD. A great actor an excellent singer. RIP EW x |
