Subject: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 18 Nov 09 - 12:13 PM Here's a Youtube clip of Doc Scantlin and the Red Hot Peppers in the mid '80s. Terri Scantlin, Doc Scantlin, Steve 'Hambone' Hickman, and I. There's a few more if you like this one, Doc Scantlin at his best. Yes, that's me behind the beard and my grandad's 1931 Supertone guitar. http://www.facebook.com/posted.php?id=1135181692&share_id=189976945840&comments=1#s189976945840 |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Lonesome EJ Date: 18 Nov 09 - 12:24 PM I don't see anything but a photo of you looking like a Miami private investigator. Maybe it's because I'm not your "friend" yet. I sent a request. When I first saw the thread title I was anticipating a video of you with Anthony Akedas and Flea performing True Men Don't Kill Coyotes while wearing a loin cloth. I am relieved and slightly disappointed at the same time. |

Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Lonesome EJ Date: 18 Nov 09 - 01:04 PM That guy Scantlin is, well, irrepressible. Wow! You folks would give the Holy Modal Rounders a run for their money. I really got a kick out of Indian War Whoop too. The Inperial Palms Band also looks like a must-see! |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 18 Nov 09 - 01:18 PM Les, you and I have still got a few 'whoops' left in us. EJ, the Peppers were a whole lot of fun. Yes, the Imperial Palms are a great band, see them on Youtube. Doc is quite a talent. I still see Miss Terry at festivals and occasionally speak to Hambone. We're all still out here making music. |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Rasener Date: 18 Nov 09 - 01:25 PM Is Miss Terry still as good looking and is she still single Chance? |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 18 Nov 09 - 03:34 PM Yes, she is both! Shorter hair, but still very much involved with Old Time Music. I saw her this year at Fiddler's Grove. She is a lovely person. |

Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 18 Nov 09 - 04:43 PM Jealousy is most unbecoming, gentlemen. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Genie Date: 18 Nov 09 - 05:09 PM I did get to see it on the second try. Wonderful video. But who was that guy with the guitar and the hairy face? ; D |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Genie Date: 18 Nov 09 - 05:11 PM Micca, whence your familiarity with and expertise on badgers' arses? |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Genie Date: 18 Nov 09 - 05:13 PM BTW, Chance, if you add the term "Mudcatter" to any Mudcatter's video on YouTube it makes it easy for other Mudcatters to find the video. ("Mudcat" has too many other refererents and will get you umpteen gazillion pages of videos that have nothing to do with music.) |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Bill D Date: 18 Nov 09 - 05:16 PM Hey, Chance! Did you work with Scantlin when he did the WFF a few times in the 80s? I may have videos of some of those. |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 18 Nov 09 - 06:14 PM Bill, I don't remember for sure, but I think not. I think that was before I joined them. |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Bob Hitchcock Date: 18 Nov 09 - 08:39 PM Hey Chance, I remember those guys, they used to hang around our house on Pearson Street and get drunk and pass out in the front yard I think. Bob. |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 19 Nov 09 - 08:13 AM Hey Bob, the Pearson Street Annals are yet to be written. I do recall the neighbors telephoning to have us identify a comotose musician, sometimes known as Blind Bill, in their yard. I can recall Pearson Street quite clearly, if I put a hand over one eye. |

Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Bob Hitchcock Date: 19 Nov 09 - 03:52 PM Oh Chance, we could write a very long book about Pearson Street. I remember that old lady who lived behind us and used to sunbathe in the nude, what a shock we all had that day. Blind Bill, I seem to recall a few nights he ended up in someones yard when the sun came up. Bob. |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Beer Date: 19 Nov 09 - 10:11 PM I'm glad I checked in. That is real good stuff chance. Real good. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 20 Nov 09 - 10:06 AM Beer (Adrien), I'm glad you enjoyed it. Susette and I cheerfully acknowledge Doc's influence on our approach to this music, as well as all the original sources, the Skillet Lickers, Uncle Dave Macon and Cousing Minnie Pearl. and J.E. Mainer. Emmett Miller's recordings include 'Minstral Show' dialogues that are an interesting influence for this 'show' approach as well. Chance |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: GUEST,Goodnight Gracie Date: 20 Nov 09 - 03:41 PM Gee I remember Chance. You guys were great. I remember Steve when I first met him when he was doing instrument repair repair in Wheaton. I thought it was bizarre how he was always in character. What fun. Please let Suzette know that I got my new banjo from Cedar Mountain and it is really nice. I'd like to get together and play once I get my chops. Grace |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: open mike Date: 20 Nov 09 - 08:11 PM better than the red hot chili peppers! thanks for sharing that.... |
Subject: RE: Fortunato with The Red Hot Peppers 1985 From: Fortunato Date: 21 Nov 09 - 07:52 AM Miss Grace, I understand that Doc is still always 'in character'. I've enjoyed the 'secret identity' method myself. "Play your banjo, Gracie". |
