Subject: RE: buying Catalan instruments in Barcelona From: Jack Campin Date: 21 Nov 09 - 08:38 PM And after a bit of guesswork I found this list of Spanish folk instrument makers: http://www.arrakis.es/~josugp/lutviento.htm |
Subject: RE: buying Catalan instruments in Barcelona From: Jack Campin Date: 21 Nov 09 - 07:22 PM Marion found the place, but while it sells folk instruments from all over Europe, it doesn't sell Catalan ones any more. The proprietor said he couldn't get them. I suppose people must get their Catalan instruments direct from makers. Finding them must be an interesting exercise. |

Subject: RE: buying Catalan instruments in Barcelona From: Paul Davenport Date: 20 Nov 09 - 03:38 PM There's a small music store which sells trad instruments on the same side of the Ramblas as the Boquera market and about 50 yards from Palca de Cataluna (sorry about my crap Spanish/Catalan spelling) There's also a small store which specialises in vintage guitars etc about hundred yrds down from George Orwell Square in the Barrio Gotic. Hope this is of some help. |

Subject: RE: buying Catalan instruments in Barcelona From: Folkiedave Date: 20 Nov 09 - 02:17 PM Hi Jack, we were there a few years ago and there was a music shop not far from the Ramblas - I remember one of the lads bought a Gralla. My Sac De Gemecs story for your delight. There is no clack valve, and a local (Sheffield) lad asked a Sac de Gemecs player if he could have a go. Since my Catalan did not stretch to "tell him there is no clack valve" I couldn't translate what the Catalan was trying to tell me. Thus the Sheffield lad nearly blew himself up and sail over the town hall. |
Subject: buying Catalan instruments in Barcelona From: Jack Campin Date: 20 Nov 09 - 02:11 PM My girlfriend is in Barcelona at the moment and I asked her to look out for some musical things for me. She hasn't found it easy. CDs of L'Ham de Foc are unobtainable since their record company went bust recently. And she can't find any shop that sells traditional Catalan instruments; I was hoping for a keyed flabiol, or maybe a fible - a friend of mine has a tenora so we could play together. They all just say "that's difficult". Ideas? Where do you buy cobla instruments, or a sac de gemecs? |
