Subject: RE: Folklore: ballad of ho chi minh - which record? From: Jim Carroll Date: 21 Nov 09 - 08:47 AM Viet Nam programmes; Have had a look at our indexes with no luck which means they haven't been included in our collection but are somewhere waiting to be listed. From memory, there were several programmes made by Charles Parker in co-operation with the Critics Group - Jack Warshaw, an American singer - draft dodger was one of the leading figures in the programmes. I seem to remember they were called 'Broadside On' - but couldn't swear to it. I will try and find what I have over the next few days and post the information, but if I am right that it was Charles who made them, the originals will be housed in the Charles Parker Archive at Birmingham Central Library and should be indexed and available for listening. I think the archive has a web site; if not, the library might be of some help. I know little more than this as it happened before I joined The Critics Group. Sorry I can't be more definite about this. Good luck, Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: Folklore: ballad of ho chi minh - which record From: GUEST,atze Date: 21 Nov 09 - 07:38 AM to guest unfortunately none of the links work it would be great to listen to vietnamese songs about ho chi minh (vietnamese political songs in general) but with a good translation that probably applies to all folk music from around the world, but especially for political songs i find that important, as they give you an idea about the hopes, the aspirations and yes, the struggles of a people... |

Subject: RE: Folklore: ballad of ho chi minh - which record? From: Jim Carroll Date: 20 Nov 09 - 07:48 PM During the Viet Nam war there was some contact between North Vietnam and MacColl's Critics Group - Charles Parker and the Group produced a couple of radio programmes in support of them. I think I might have some recordings or scripts of these somewhere I would guess that that's where that version came from. I'll check in the morning (suffering from the effects of a pub quiz) Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Folklore: ballad of ho chi minh - which record? From: Jim Carroll Date: 20 Nov 09 - 02:57 PM I was surprised to learn recently that the songs was never released commercially - sound system not working properly, but if it's the version I think it is, the singer is John Faulkner Jim Carroll |
Subject: Folklore: ballad of ho chi minh - which record? From: GUEST,atze Date: 20 Nov 09 - 02:53 PM have been looking everywhere for this version of that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hfpQeQZCnA it is used in this wonderful looking documentary (that is naturally and unfortunately in vietnamese): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22pof7_3Pn4&feature=related you people here are my last hope, if no-one can help i probably would have to inquire with the vietnamese ministry of culture about this - and i would hate to delay their important work with something as trivial as this and i am really just looking for that information, so no need to rant about "north-vietnamese atrocities that maccoll was part of by writing that song" (also would i be interested in who the other singer on this record of that song is http://www.imeem.com/pvloc90/music/eWcrqrRe/ewan-maccoll-the-ballad-of-ho-chi-minh/ ) thanks |
