I know some of us around here have been scrambling to get GoogleWave invitations spread around so we can begin practicing with it.

Today on Twitter a fellow asked if anyone had invitations for http://ffffound.com/. Interesting site. I poked around in it a bit; it seems to want to direct you to images based upon preferences you vote for, but I've only given it a cursory glance so far. Got into some Hunter S. Thompson photos that were pretty interesting. . . anyway, is anyone on Mudcat using that one? And other than Max and myself, does anyone else have a GoogleWave account? Send me your gmail address via PM and I'll add you to my contacts. I have a few, but they're not using it much so there's little opportunity to practice. There are some open (to all) waves, but I've also only given those a quick look so far.

What other Beta or established sites are you using out there that operate via membership-by-invitation? Share details and links, please!

(As if I didn't have enough other stuff to waste time on.)

Funny you should ask....

A new version of Opera just came out... OperaUnite, which has options for a web server, file sharing, pic sharing...etc...'open to public' or password protected.

I got it this morning and figgered out how to specify a folder on MY machine for images. I have a craft show this weekend, so have not explored the rest of it....but it looks impressive!

I looked at the Opera 10.0 page for the Mac, and it neither tells you about OperaUnite nor how to download Opera itself.

I used Opera way back when on MacOS 9. It was okay.

Opera is quite okay in many respects. It has a keyboard shortcut navigation setup that is marvelous! Since Opera 10, it has added many tricks. (Opera actually conforms to the specs of the WWW standards better than other browsers...so some things don't work because they were designed for lax browsers... *wry smile*)

Still, Firefox & other browsers have many nice features also...I have a collections of browsers and file managers, etc., like some folks have a collection of cars or guitars or whistles.

A fellow NEEDS a hobby to keep him out of bars & other low places.. ☺

You can use Google Sites (I'm logged in so I'm not getting a simple link to post, but if you go to Google and look under "other" then you'll find it) it works like GeoCities, only a lot more classy.

Last week at UT Arlington we had Dan Russell speak to a group of students, and later he sat down with librarians. He's a developer at Google, and it was a fascinating tour of stuff they're working on. I notice that his personal web site is on Google Sites, and it looks like a blog, but can do a lot more things. And I suspect it can tie in now (or soon) with Wave.

I got two different bogus spam/phishing invites purporting to come from a GOOD friend's "social networking" sites-- when I checked, he said NO WAY had he sent them and he'd never heard of the "sites," either.

Look out, folks.

It wouldn't take a clever but dangerous schemer 3 minutes to find two people who 'know' each other and then to send each of them fake messages or invitations purporting to be from the other. There are a dozen reasons someone would do this: from email collecting to just being mean.

It is always well to double-check surprises.

Nobody know? Where's it hidden?
