Happy Thanksgiving (I hope that is the appropriate greeting!!,) to all my friends in the USA, I am thankful for your existence and your friendship, and celebrate it in my own way. If you dont mind, I'll pass on the Pumpkin pie but am open to sampling (purely from a sense of duty and fair play, well someone has to do the dirty work) any Apple pies that might be around.
Just an afterthought are their Thanksgiving greetings cards?(of course their are Greetings cards, the Card industry that manufactured Fathers day from whole cloth would not let such an opportunity to make money pass, would they?)are they cheesy? wistful? schmaltsy? We should be told!!

I think this possibly belongs above in 'folklore' myself, but up there you're also less likely to glean so many responses.

I don't 'understand' thanksgiving, purely as I've never participated in it, I'm not sure what it's all about.
But *any* formal excuse to have fun and enjoy is good by me.
Happy stuff to those doing their thing, whatever it's all about :)

One day to remind us of the bounty we have all year, that (except for greeting cards which are optional) is mostly about family gathering together, without a lot of commercial hoopla- works for me!

For some families, it's about eating too much at midday, then watching football all afternoon.

For my family, it's a later meal, lots of friendly visiting, a long walk if the weather allows, followed by leftovers for a week or more.

Gratitude abounds, today and every day.

Happy day, everyone!

btw, as for me I prefer "Bite the Bird" to Happy Thanksgiving.

A very rich and happy day to all.

"[New York, 3 October 1789]

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor-- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be-- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks--for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war--for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Go: Washington"

To me, Thanksgiving Day is just a kind of happy holiday. Christmas to me is heavy, fraught with conflicting aims and expectations and contaminated with greed.   Too much like stepping into a casino. New Year's Eve is too determined to have FUN!!. New Year's Day, on the other hand, is good, and by my preference, spent in solitude.

So I like Thanksgiving Day. I have so many things to be thankful for, things to cherish and cuddle to my heart. Things like love received and reciprocated, family and friends and pets and heartwrenching beauty from sunrises and sunsets and snow-pillowed mountains and a freshly bathed and brushed dog.

I am so low at the moment.

I miss my kids.

I miss my Mom and siblings, aunts and uncles and cousins.

I miss Virginia countryside and Virginia accents.

I miss cleaning, polishing, prepping, cooking, laughing and singing Christmas carols early.

I miss the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I miss shouting at my children to stop fighting over the TV remote.

I miss grumbling under my breath at unhelpful (now ex) spouse.

I miss pumpkin pie.

I miss planning the next few meals with the leftovers.

I miss rearranging the furniture to accommodate the Christmas tree while I have family in the house to help me do it.

I miss getting the Christmas decorations out of storage and remembering over each ornament.

I will miss spending the Sunday afternoon doing all the Christmas cards so they are ready to go in 2 weeks time.

All of it I miss, but nothing like I miss my kids.

thankful that we can come here and be together...
when joyful or sad...and share the company of
friends here...

here are the lyrics to that song by johnny cash
from the dr. quinn medicine woman show..

We've come to the time in the season
When family and friends gather near
To offer a prayer of Thanksgiving
For blessings we've known through the year
To join hands and thank the creator
And now when Thanksgiving is due
This year when I count my blessings
I'm thanking the Lord He made you
This year when I count my blessings
I'm thanking the Lord He made you

I'm grateful for the laughter of children
The sun and the wind and the rain
The color of blue in your sweet eyes
The sight of a high ball and train
The moon rise over a prairie
Old love that you've made new
This year when I count my blessings
I'm thanking the Lord He made you
This year when I count my blessings
I'm thanking the Lord He made you

And when the time comes to be going
It won't be in sorrow and tear
I'll kiss you goodbye and I'll go on my way
Grateful for all of the years
I thank for all that you gave me
For teaching me what love can do
Thanksgiving day for the rest of my life
I'm thanking the Lord He made you
Thanksgiving day for the rest of my life
I'm thanking the Lord He made you

Well, we didn't have turkey at our house, so I'm hoping somebody invites me for leftovers. We had borscht and sweet potatoes and a rice pilaf, which was very nice - but it wasn't turkey.

My wife Christina is a chiropractor and she's very health-conscious, so she doesn't prepare food in what one would consider a conventional way. She has an especially tenuous relationship with pumpkin pie, and I never know what to expect out of her pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. One year, she didn't use anything to sweeten it. This year, she used two eggs instead of four, and molasses and honey instead of sugar, no crust, and freshly-cooked squash instead of canned pumpkin. All afternoon long, I could hear the screams of dying squash, a truly awful affair. I waited two hours after dinner to try it....and believe it or not, it wasn't bad. Now, my health-conscious wife ate as much whipped cream as she did pie, but she's convinced she added years to the lives of her family by this.

Happy Thanksgiving!

-Joe-

I'm thankful that I was able to spend time with some family members yesterday. Thankful to the planners and funders (including us taxpayers!) of the highways I used in my one-hour-plus drive over the river and through the woods. Thankful to the other drivers for not hitting me on the way there and back, especially the driver of the yellow Mustang convertible who was on my tail and then barely missed me as he swerved around me in the non-passing lane! (I would have pulled into the slower lane for him, if he had given me a chance to!)

Thankful to my brother and sister-in-law for inviting me to Thanksgiving dinner, and thankful to my sister-in-law for cooking it -- yummm! Not so thankful to them for exposing me to my three-year-old great-niece's cold (she and my great-nephew and their mother, my niece, live with my bro and sis-in-law), but thankful to them for making the attempt to keep her away from everyone else for the most part. Thankful to my other niece and her husband for being there with their 5-year-old daughter, though she was doing her best to misbehave and drive her mother and grandmother to yelling at her. Thankful to my sis-in-law's 89-year-old father for not saying anything obnoxious this time, as is his wont.

Thankful most of all for the ability to take my leave of the whole noisy, tense situation and go home to the peace and quiet of living alone with my two cats... with some leftovers to eat today!

Peace to all,
Sharon

Poem cum folk-carol 230 of 230: AS GOSPELLERS HAVE SAID/CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

(TUNE:

D A B A G E
E E D G F# G
D A B A G E
D A B A G E
E E D G F# G
D A B A G E

D A B A G E

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

That's lovely, Walkabouts, but wouldn't it be more appropriate on a Christmas thread than on a "Happy Thanksgiving" thread? At least, more people would see it on a Christmas thread!

Yeah, yeah, I know, you're thankful for your God's gift of his son... but we already had a holiday for that before Thanksgiving was invented to give us pause to think about other things for which to be thankful.

To everything there is a season, and all that. :-)

So, all the rhymes in the last verse end with -ance, eh? So would someone in a God-loving stance dance and prance like he had ance in his pance?

Sorry; couldn't resist! :-)

Seriously, though, if I were you, David Walkabouts, I would let go of the -ance rhymes altogether. Certainly the faithful consider their light (that they shine before men) worth more than a "glance"! Besides, we glance AT things, and the word "at" is missing from your verse. In other words, you're working too hard at trying to make the -ance rhymes fit the meter, and the verse ends up sounding extremely contrived. Time for a rewrite!

It's then and now, Sharon; and, thus, "Beneath signalling skies" relates to "Beneath bright or dark skies...Faith's the star that we glance."

From David - a "fellow poet/songwriter" who doesn't "dance and prance", Sharon.
