Subject: Great big saw
From: bob schwarer
Date: 26 Jul 99 - 01:01 PM

Will some please post the words (the rest of the words) to this song. The part I remember goes:

And the great big saw came nearer and nearer and nearer and nearer and nearer.
Be my wife or you will be cut in two, said the villain to poor little Vera
No!, no!. Even tho you have money in banks,
I wouldn't wed you if you cut me in planks.

Help please.

Bob S.

I'm just refreshing this, Bob, sorry! I do know someone who's got the sheet music to this song. Unfortunately I'm not at home at the moment, and It'll be three weeks or so before I can get in touch. If anyone else wants to beat me to it, please feel free!

Steve

I can wait. The version I heard was by Spike Jones. Went to a bunch of SJ web sites, but no luck with this song.

I thought this was going to be either a lumberjack thread or a report that the Canadian group Great Big Sea had disbanded.

Sorry Bob! I ought to keep you posted. No, I'm afraid I haven't been able to get in touch with my contact for ages. I'll try and find someone who's a mutual friend (there should be one or two) and get a phone number or something. Wouldn't life be easier if everyone was on the Net?

AND THE GREAT BIG SAW CAME NEARER AND NEARER!

Written by R P Weston and Bert Lee Composed by Harris Weston

  1.
C F
Now he was a Saw Mill proprietor,
G7 F G7 C
And she a fair maid yet un_kissed.
F
One evening he winked his squint eye at her,
G7 Dm G7 C G7 C
But she said "Nay, nay, Sir, de_sist!"
Em A dim Em
So he dragged her into the Saw Mill, poor wench,
Cm G D7 G7 Cdim C#dim G7
Then took off his belt and strapped her to the bench!

Chorus:
C F
And the great big saw came nearer and nearer
G7 C
And nearer and nearer and nearer!
F
"Be my wife or you will be cut in two!"
G7 C
Said the Villain to poor little Vera.
C7 F C F C A7
But she said "Nay, nay, though you cut me in twain,
D7 C7 Ddim D7 Ddim G Ddim C#dim G7
The ang_els will stick me to_geth_er a_____gain!"
C F
And the great big saw came nearer and nearer
G7 C
and nearer and nearer and nearer!

2.
The villainous Saw Mill proprietor
Heard her screaming there fit to bust,
So what did he do just to quiet her?
He filled up her mouth with saw-dust!
She looked like a lovely wax doll there, it's true,
And chock full of saw-dust she felt like on too!

And the big saw came nearer and nearer!
"Be my wife or you will be cut in two!"
said the Villain to poor little Vera.
But she said "Nay, nay, though you've money in banks
I wouldn't wed you if you cut me in planks!"
And the big saw came nearer and nearer!

C
But ha ha, look who's here!

Why it's young Rancher Jim!
G7
'Tis her sweetheart, a burly sheep shearer,
C
And he yells to the Villain "Hands up, you big brute!"
G7
And the big saw comes nearer and nearer!
Em Am Em
But the Villain has used his belt strapping her down,
Am Em Am Em
Yes, he's used it to strap down poor Vera,
AM Em
So when he throws his hands up, his trousers fall down,
Am Em G7
And the big saw comes nearer and nearer!

But who's this? It's the Sheriff - he shows them his star
Then he says when he looks round at Vera
"Gee, ain't that just too bad! What d'ya know about that!"
And the big saw comes nearer and nearer!
Ah, then in comes the doctor (he'd heard the gal scream So he thought she'd been queer and got queerer)
He says "Show me your tongue! Now let me feel your pulse!"
And the big saw comes nearer and nearer!

But who's this? 'Tis the old Undertaker with tape,
He kneels down and measures poor Vera.
Says he "Would you like it in elm or in oak?"
And the big saw comes nearer and nearer!
"Ah, but can nothing save her!" they say, and they weep,
for they think it means good-bye to Vera
till she hollars out "Stop the machin'ry, you fools!"
and they do - it's a darned good ideah!

Now the saw no more comes nearer and nearer
And nearer and nearer and nearer!
Wedding bells ding dong, the hero so strong
Goes to Church with his beautiful Vera.
But now fed-up with marriage she'll say "Listen here
For goodness sake next time, Sam, don't interfere
When the great big saw comes nearer and nearer
And nearer and nearer and nearer!"

Oh bother!! I forgot to put nbsp's between the chords!! Maybe you can work it out; in two or three places a chord or two follows the end of the words - in the gap between the lines, I mean. Sorry for the long delay: the music will follow as soon as I can knock it up.

Second try:
