Herbert Happy Lawson wrote both the words and the music, according to the IN Harmony site that I cited earlier.

By the way, the sheet music does not put Happy in quotes; therefore I assume it was his real middle name and not a nickname.

I know it may sound trivial, but I swear I don't remember seeing words like "anymore," "anytime," "alot" commonly used instead of "any more," "any time," and "a lot" until just the last few years.   Kelly Clarkson recorded a new song titled "Anytime" - spelled that way - back in 2003, and I wrote it off as just sloppy spelling. I didn't realize that spelling had been used for Lawson's song so far back.

(I just checked Merriam-Webster's online dictionary to see if it was spelled as one word or two, and, ironically, they used the two-word form as part of the definition of the single word form:

an⋅y⋅time  [en-ee-tahym]
–adverb
1.        at any time; regardless of hour, date, etc.; whenever.

So, obviously, either way is acceptable.


BTW, I did not know the verse, nor did I know the alternate couplet:
"Anytime will be the right time.
Anytime at all will do."

This is one song that almost always gets lots of people singing along when I do it. Looking at that partial list of artists who have recorded it, I am not surprised so many people know it.

Genie: I suffer from pedantry too, but mostly I suffer in silence.

Before I posted the lyrics, I consulted Allmusic.com, under the entry for the songwriter, Herbert "Happy" Lawson. (That's where I got most of my list of performers.) They list around 135 recordings by various artists, and all but 3 of them use the spelling ANYTIME, including those by Eddy Arnold, who also had an album called "Anytime." So that's what I used.

However, today I checked the Indiana University "IN Harmony" sheet music web site. They apparently have the sheet music in their library, although it isn't viewable online. The catalog entry says ANY TIME. That's how WorldCat.org lists it, too. So that's probably authoritative.

I figure what probably happened was this: when Lawson wrote the song, he called it ANY TIME. When Arnold recorded it, either he or his record company (probably the latter) decided to call it (or perhaps mistakenly called it) ANYTIME. Since Arnold had the big hit with it, nearly everyone who covered it followed his example instead of referring back to the sheet music.

This isn't too surprising; I suppose it's far more common for musicians to learn songs by listening to other people's recordings than by reading sheet music.

One of the recordings called ANY TIME was by Leon Redbone. His album was also called "Any Time." Do you suppose he spelled it that way because he learned the song from the sheet music? This made me wonder whether Redbone sang it any differently than Arnold (and everybody else) did. So I played a sample at Allmusic.com, and sure enough, I heard words I had never heard before. Then I Googled with those words, and found this:

This may seem pedantic, but I'm wondering if the original song title was "Anytime" or "Any Time." I see it written both ways, and I think the current trend is to make it one word. (BTW, I've probably 'known' of the song since I was small, but it really came into my consciousness via Arlo Guthrie's version of it on the album "Alice's Restaurant," and it's become a staple of my performing repertoire in recent years.

The reason I care about the spelling is that it can affect searching for the song (lyrics, recordings, etc.) (That, and because I suffer from terminal pedantry.) ; D
