Dick I never doubted that you were treated badly and that a heads up for other performers was useful but you need a gig for the night, and a bed and supper so I was just nudging the thread in that direction, the original gig is lost, however annoying that might be, but it isn't going to re appear

Steve Shaw and I have had personal disagreements.
Steve you are perfectly free to contact Mansfield folk club,Mansfield Folk club can come on to this forum and say their piece.
here is the correspondence realating to the cancellation.
message: 27th Nov 2009
Hi there Dick,

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the folk club
has experienced quite a few changes in the
past few months and regrettably we've had to
make some changes to our 2010 bookings
calendar.

I'm afraid your booking at the Brown Cow Folk
Club for June 8th 2010 has to be cancelled.
I am very sorry about this, but as it is over
6 months away, I do hope it doesn't cause you
too much inconvenience.

I have taken over from Sue Crawford who made
the original booking with you, as she is not
at all well these days and all contact with
the club should, for now, be through me - my
contact details are shown above in the email
header.
I apologise once again for cancelling the
booking.

Regards
.------------------------------hi,what is the reason for cancelling the booking?
what has happened to the club? can we arrange an alternative date?or can I do the club for a reduced fee?,the previous night I am in leicestershire,so my travelling expenses are minimal,I hope we can come to some compromise.
Unfortunately it is unlikely that I will now be able to fill this date,as most clubs are booked up beyond six months.
Best Wishes,Dick Miles
Hi Dick

The club has had a rocky road from organisation point of view over the past 6 -8 months ( I'm sure most of the regulars are quite unaware of what goes on behind the scenes and haven't noticed) added to this our venue has been under threat several times and we've had 3 different landlords at the pub - a new one started last week

Sue and John Crawford who'd been doing a grand job of running the club for a few years decided to stand down as Sue's health hasn't been too good. Another guy offered to take it on but unfortunately he ran into a few problems and wasn't able to do all the admin that's needed. Unfortunately he didn't shout for help.
Sue and John had been so efficient they'd done all the programme and printed fliers etc taking us up to Oct but when they ran out we realised we didn't even know what was happening the following week.
I offered to help sort things out.
From sketchy hand written notes I set about confirming what acts were booked up to the end of the year, got a programme printed and the website updated etc. but we'd missed all the deadlines for advertising in the likes of Stirrings.
I've since worked through the notes for Jan - March and am now piecing together information from April onwards which is where I've hit a snag. We normally run a guest night approx once every 4-5 weeks. I don't know how it's happened, but there are 3 Guest Bookings in a 7 week period from end of April to 8th June, two of which are traditional concertina acts.   I can only imagine that it happened during this overlap period.

It's not so much about the fee - but thank you for offering to come at a reduced rate- but the fact that we have two acts that will sound very similar in the programme so close together. We're only a small club and don't have much of a draw from outside of the town and I just don't think we would get much support for the second one. I have discussed the situation with a couple of the club regulars and they unfortunately agree.   Hence my decision to cancel your booking - I'm sorry .

Have you tried Belper Folk Club - they also meet on a Tuesday and at the moment their website isn't showing any confirmed act for June?

I really feel awkward about this Dick but not as bad as if you were playing to a nearly empty room.

Regards tina

my problem is that I am on tour from Ireland, finding accomodation for the night will be difficult plus finding another gig
,is it not possible to cancel one of the other sqeezebox giggers?, after all they live in the country and wont be as badly inconvenienced as myself,
I basically have to find and pay for accomodation as well as losing the gig, furthermore, I now use guitar for a third of my material, and was planning to do some of my own songs, to make it a less traditional night, Best Wishes Dick Miles

for the record, my act includes guitar and some contemporary material if required.
the landlord situation appears to be irrelevant,he has not thrown the club out.
so, Why not offer an alternative date,or postpone the other concertina player and offer him an alternative date,he is local to the club?

lets clarify matters, I had a gig, confirmed 14 months before
part of a tour ,it was cancelled at six months one weeks notice.
if the club is cash strapped why not say so, I offered to reduce my fee.,and suggested arranging an alternative date.
the decent thing to do was for the club to arrange an alternative date , suitable to both parties, then the club can honour its commitment, when it has the funds.

in my opinion other performers need to be warned about this club.
every performer has a right to be treated in an honourable way.
SteveShaw ,I will send you a ,personal message,so can see the correspondence.

maybe mansfield are cash strapped as most folk clubs are, sympathise with that, how do you balance getting in good performers and balancing the books? especially pitching the tricket costs with what people can afford. maybe to embarrassed to admit it re creditability ratings with performers, maybe it is more personal, any way, time for the thread to move on, GSS, try starting a thread like "host wanted for house concert in ********* on june 8 2010". I think you would get a taker

Not enough seems to have been made of the fatuity of the organisers' excuse that they couldn't have two concertina players so close together. The concertina has now surely long since become one of the most widespread of conventional folk accompaniment instruments, second only to the guitar. How heartily we would laugh if they had said they couldn't do with two guitar players in their club only 6 weeks apart!

Civilservant, are you a performer? Don't think so. Most gigs are now booked at least nine months to a year in advance. If it were us i wouldn't weep cos we would only have a long drive to miss, but for someone who is putting a tour together and committed to it, it simply isn't on, the chances of getting a replacement gig nigh impossible. So GSS why don't you see if someone would do a house concert for you in the area, even if it is for board and lodge for the night it saves you cash and you never know may make you some dosh.

It is always difficult to comment without having knowledge of the full facts and circumstances, however.....

It may be the the excuse given to Dick is a cover for some other reason for not booking him, but if it is true that "Two squeezeboxes in six weeks" was given, then that does seem to be a bit feeble. Surely, the melodeon, concertina and accordion are amongst the most popular instruments; the lifeblood of many folk clubs. I run a folk club and I see that I have booked six squeezebox players in the first ten guest nights of 2010.

Six months is a very reasonable time to give notice to cancel a gig. Most folk clubs run on shoestrings anyway and in my personal experience a lot of expense comes out of the organisers own pocket.

If you're a performer its rock and roll and comes with the territory. Also if you are good enough as a professional you should be able to generate your own gigs, without relying on folk clubs who run on their own agenda.

This is in my humble opinion

I remember many years ago, in my hitch-hiking days, I met up on one of my trips with a girl from Mansfield, and she told me that Mansfield had the distinction of having the highest murder rate per capita of anywhere in the UK.

Whether she was correct in this, and if so whether the town still holds this claim to fame, I have no idea.

Too many squeezeboxes - which turns out to be just two.

I wonder if they would have taken the same action if there had been two guitarists on the trot?

It makes me think there may be some other underlying reason for the cancellation.

GSS is not "airing his dirty linen" If anything is dirty, it is the unprofessional treatment that he has received. We did (on another thread) ask him to "name and shame" so that others can be made aware of this! My guess is that the unamed guest is somebody from the guilty club!

Not a very productive or helpful 'thought', I should say, Guest - whoever you may be. And in what way is the passing on of such information which should be of help or interest to other professionals having dealings with this, it certainly appears, much remiss and unmannerly club, to be denounced as 'unprofessional airing of dirty linen'? I can't see how any part of that pejorative denunciation is in the least applicable.

Guest (whoever you are) are we to take it that in your view, the venue acted professionally? I certainly think they did not. If it is their practice to treat artists with such lack of consideration, others need to be aware.

Mansfield Folk club has still not offered any recompense for cancelling a gig.
the gig was cancelled nov 27 2009[six months one week ,most clubs book 9 months to one year ]the reason [too many squeezeboxers],thats myself and locally based Steve Turner.
as I am on tour from Ireland, unless I get another confirmed gig,I will have to pay for accomodation for the night [thats approximately 40 /50 euros].
no artist deserves to be treated in this cavalier fashion.

I have just received a cancellation from the Mansfield folk club, and now have this date available,as part of a tour in England,if there are organisers who may be interested in booking me for this date, could they contact me at www.dickmiles.com.
Six months notice gives me very little time to organise alternative date, as many clubs are booked a year in advance, it also creates a problem for me finding accomodation, as I am on tour from Ireland.any offers would be appreciated I am prepared to work for areduced fee to fill this date, thankyou
