Subject: BS: Is Five-a-Day Healthy? Help From: Folkiedave Date: 02 Dec 09 - 10:48 AM I thought this might deserve a thread on its own. We are told that Five-a-Day is healthy. So I am currently aiming towards this. I have fruit in the form of lemon in my Gin and Tonic. Tomato in the form of sauce on my Fish and Chips. Carrot Cake with my coffee. Any more along those lines? |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Five-a-Day Healthy? Help From: Wyrd Sister Date: 02 Dec 09 - 11:42 AM Ah! If you read your (plebeian) wine labels carefully, you'll often find something like 'melon and citrus' on a white, or 'luscious berry' on a red. Have been known to get four of the five a day in one bottle! |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Five-a-Day Healthy? Help From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 02 Dec 09 - 12:00 PM Must admit I find this 'paint by numbers' pedantic formulaic governmental advice patronising bunkum writ for infants. And that's from a someone who eats a primarily wholefood, vegetarian diet & likes it too. So, this highly processed product which was partly formed from something that once looked like a tomato, counts as 'a vegetable'? Well whatever, not on my planet it doesn't! But then I'd say just eat it, and enjoy anyway! Then have a salad sarni later IF indeed you feel you must meet the Ministry for Healthful Joy's prescribed '5 A Day' to make up for it. Otherwise just stop counting, and roughly balance indulgence in yummy junk with indulgence in yummy fresh veggie brews. That's my kinda nutritional science for dummies :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Five-a-Day Healthy? Help From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 02 Dec 09 - 12:09 PM Actually FolkieDave, your diet from another thread, sounds spot on to me. Just the kind of stuff I eat in fact. Carrot cake is my favourite too. I suppose government have to make the 'healthy' thing easily digestible for less awake people, but it's certainly not something to try to rigidly adhere to In My Humble. I'd just stick to roughly balancing 'fresh' veggies with junk, rather than trying to artificially 'fill' the numbers with processed stuff that once upon a time had some kind of vegetable matter in it. Possibly not helpful response to your OP, but that's the internet! |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Five-a-Day Healthy? Help From: gnu Date: 02 Dec 09 - 01:24 PM Happy... fruit is bad for your teeth if you leave that sugar there for any more than about twenty minutes (I dunno where... I don't even remember if it's 20 m). However, I did hear, lately (I think?), that raisins are good for your teeth. If you can't brush right away, a a couple of chomps of raisins are a good substitute. BTW... snacking on fruit alone is not good if you are prone to diabetes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Five-a-Day Healthy? Help From: Folkiedave Date: 02 Dec 09 - 06:05 PM Wonderful. I am certainly getting some crisps and dips to make up the total. Manitas, I was lucky to get a cherry at any time in my life. That is one I have given up on. I don't smoke, could I have a sweet cigarette instead? Les, I like your suggestions and I may swap the lemon in a G and T for lemon meringue pie. Then I can have a vodka and orange. |
