Thanks folks. This was an amazing surprise last night, particularly in view of the day we had had - see 'Another biopsy'.

It was a joint effort - Dan told us the idea - I got the first few people interested in donating a track, Kendall used his friendships with some good names in the folk world and then Dan took over and did most of the hard work.

It pleases me that this album has been nominated as this will, hopefully, lead to more sales and that will benefit Joanna. This was an album created out of deep love and respect for a great man, who never really looked for fame and fortune and who spent a lot of his time trying to make life better for others. I only wish that he was alive to see this.

I remember the day you guys called. It was just a group of friends going to put out a CD. 12 tracks or so and see if we couldn't raise a few bucks to help out. You three and Gordon, as I recall. I say, "sure, I'll throw in an old wobbly song". Seems like every few days I get a call from Dan. "Rosalie Sorrels is in", "Paxton is giving us a track", "Ed Trickett, Marcy and Cathy are onboard". Then we needed distribution and I was working with Jim Fleming on a fundraising concert for Utah's family. I put him in touch with Dan and they worked out a deal with Ani Difranco. Dan was absolutely devoted to the project and was the steam in the engine. He deserves the lions share of the accolades on the project, and I am most happy for my young friend. Next thing you know, Pete Seeger, Jean Ritchie, Mary Black and Emmy Lou Harris are a part of the deal. What started out as a little 12 track CD among friends and admirers turned into 39 tracks from across the spectrum of the folk music world.

Congratulations, my dear friends, Dan, Jacqui, and Captain Kendall. I am honored to be in your company.

Although for a compilation album the official nomination goes to the producers, this album really was a grassroots, group effort, and all the musicians deserve a great deal of congratulations and gratitude for the time, love, and often money that went into making every track.

But especially we couldn't have done it without Jacqui and Kendall, who got us rolling, gave the project energy and credibility, and stayed right through to the end, whether we were dealing with sequencing, liner notes, cover design, or what have you. Don't let them sell themselves short.

One other person that deserves a HUGE amount of credit is Charlie Pilzer, who took a collection of 39 tracks, some recorded in studios, but many recorded in homes, and mastered them into a CD that works.

Folks,
I've not been able to pick and sing for 13 years and counting, but since word of this broke, my stock is through the roof. Really weird!!!!! People who knew "vaguely" that I did something with music, have been sending congratulations all day long.

Dan, Kendall, Jacqui -- you made uithappen. I am terribly happy for you!! But please know that, even if only one song by ol' Art is on the CD set, I am thoroughly enjoying the vicarious spasms of orgasmic delight I am experiencing. This will be, pure and simple, an on-going love-in for everything Bruce Phillips stood for. We have a huge chance, now, to tell so many out there who never heard of Utah Phillips and his exemplary life exactly why the Wobbly Preamble was so absolutely right on in predicting the the greed-fueled depression we are enduring now.

Last night I booked the hotel for that weekend - we can cancel up to the day before if necessary. Now I'm checking airfares and will be talking to my financial adviser as to available funds to allow us to get to California.

This will all be just about two weeks after Kendall's next bout of surgery and that has to be taken into account. I hope that we can get there - it really is a once in a lifetime thing for us.

We're trying to get some publicity going to bring this to the attention of the voters, telling the story of why and how it happened and of the amazing generosity of the performers, many of whom paid out of their own pockets to put a track on the CD. If anyone out there can help with newspaper articles or mentions on radio shows we would be grateful.

The CD set was given to me during a month-long stay in a hospital burn center and the singing of all involved has helped me through some hard times then and since. A concert in Washington DC was one of the highlights for me of this past year. Best of luck to all involved in its making, which includes a number of folks I'm grateful to know.

That is odd about the Emmylou track. Must have been a hicup in the system, so it's good that you can mention it to them. (Though I didn't know about the download thing until you told us). You can hear the Emmylou track as a sample track by going to the Righteous babe site, clicking on the Singing through the Hard Times page, and then clicking on the track list. There's a little icon next to four of the tracks - click on that to listen. One of the four is the Emmylou piece.

It's a masterful piece of work, with Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, Russ Barenberg, Aly Bain, Jay and Molly Ungar, Davy Spillane, and Jim Sutherland. Talk about an all star band!

At our concert tonight in Camden, Maine, we told the audience about "Singing Through the Hard Times" and the Grammy nomination. At intermission it took about five minutes for the 8 copies to sell out, followed in rapid succession by at least 20 paid orders for it.

I got interviewed by a writer from the paper in my home town, Machias Maine. To them it is a big deal. Machias is a small town where everyone knows everyone elses business but they buy the paper to see who got caught.

The important thing is getting the word out, Captain. More sales, more publicity.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but (I have never watched the Grammys) my understanding has been that the broadcast of the ceremonies has never extended to the "esoteric" stuff like folk. If I'm wrong on that, and we can hope to see the presentation on the tube, when is the time? We're not "no TV" people, but we watch so little we don't even keep schedules or keep track of such things.

I was calmly reading the PPH yesterday and suddenly, there was a picture of KENDALL with the words Grammy nominee under it!!! Yahoo! I am proud the Grammy nominee will come to my house on Saturday to celebrate my husband's inauguration as mayor -- Sins- hope you will be there too,,,,,

It was interesting to see Utah Phillips referred to as a Unitarian. I'm guessing that it's something he adopted fairly late in life. I met Utah in 1971 and spent some time with him occasionally over the years and never heard him speak of any religious beliefs. He always called himself an anarchist said an anarchist was anyone "who didn't need a cop to tell him what to do," or who knew to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do. "Cops," he would say, aren't just the police, they're anyone who imposes their view and way of doing things on others. Certainly that includes all organized religion.

The only time I ever heard Utah speak of Unitarians was in a joke about raising money to send a poor Unitarian kid to camp...if you can find one.

He made a lot of jokes about it, but he was part of several different congregations over 40 years in the various places he lived.

One of the reasons he liked UUs is that we don't impose our views on others, and we have a wide diversity of beliefs. In his words: "This is a spiritual family, which I have chosen, and this is a family which will not and does not make rules for me. This is the family, which says to all of us — enjoins all of us — to think with the mind that we have, and not the one we're supposed to have."

On the Starlight on the Rails CD he talks about writing "Hymn Song" at the behest of his manager, and telling the manager that he was a Unitarian.

I remember him doing a concert at Passim in Cambridge, MA, where he talked about singing folk songs at his Unitarian Universalist congregation. "We're religious liberals," he said, "so we sing liberal folk songs - like 'Which Side Am I On' and 'I Would Rather Not Be Moved.'"

Utah knew the value of not taking things too seriously - even the things dear to him.

I don' quite picture either Duncan, or Brendan in a tux. Utah, yes. Bruce always did like to gussy up. By that I mean wearing the proper costume for the occassion. When he was invited to give the private tour in Chicago for the opening of the King Tut exhibit he arrived in pith helmet, safari jacket and Bermuda Schwartz with knee socks. When he came back from a festival in Switzerland he sported a beret and plus fours. I should mention that I once saw Dave Van Ronk in a tuxedo, looking like the worlds biggest emperor penguin!

Mark and all,

When Utah showed up dressed in the 18th century garb for the pre-opening invite-only tour of the great King Tut exhibit at Chicago's Field Museum----it very quickly became apparent that he knew ten times more about Egyptology than the official tour guide did. Indeed, Utah Phillips could (and did!!) read the original ancient hieroglyphics carved into the stone artifacts there. It was pretty amazing.

He was the consummate showman---and it was always aimed at the education and enlightenment of his audience!

Utah took over that Tut tour. When it was over, the tour guide, an actual Egyptologist with the Field Museum, and Bruce, were deep in conversation.

I do miss being able to call him and gab for a while. Those talks were always a revelation---even if it was only a pointed joke that had real intent when you thought past the hilarious punchline.

Congratulations to all involved.

By the way, I don't know the timing on this--as to when you have to get your votes in as to who wins in a given category. But I do know that anybody can become a member of the Grammy voters by joining the Grammy association--I think there's a fee of $75/ year or something like that.   A choral group in my area did exactly that. Lots of members of the group joined. And the group won in that category.   There's a strong suspicion there is a causal relationship.

Now folkies may be completely above stuffing the ballot box.   But if we really want Dan, Kendall, Jacqui, et al. to win, it's just possible Mudcatters can influence the outcome. If we don't mind using this tactic.

If of course it's not already too late for voting.

Of course it's also very possible that the Utah tribute will win without any of this. If I had to guess, I'd say the only strong competition might be the entry from--who was it--Loudon Wainright?

All the nominees are very strong, even if the others don't include "Maine's moonwalking, leather jacket wearing, guitar slinging tart treasure."

Grammy voting has now begun, and will continue through the first week in January.

Ron, there are requirements to become a member of the recording academy - you have to be credited on a certain number of published tracks, be actively pursuing your craft, etc. On the other hand, many Mudcat members meet those requirements, and it is always good to have more academy members with expertise in traditional music.

Slightly off topic, however I want to mention that just this past Saturday a fund raiser was held for Utah's Nevada City area homeless shelter, Hospitality House. More than a dozen musicians, poets and storytellers gave their time and talents that evening and over seventeen thousand dollars was raised to help those in need. A grand time for all who attended, a most worthy cause and the spirit of U. Utah Phillips continues on.

Good people,
I had no idea our local paper, the News Tribune, was going to create that You Tube composite. Old friend, Ron Miles, just e-mailed me with a link to it even before I noticed it in this thread. If it means some extra cash for the Phillips family that would just be stupendous!!

Jeff Dankert wrote the story after we talked on the phone. He's a fine reporter over at the paper, and he did an earlier very nice piece on the Smithsonian requisitioning the original slides from which the "Art's Place" folk scene photo site was created for me by Bruce Kallick (BKlick here at Mudcat.)

Amazing, I'm glad I looked in on this Forum tonight. Max and all of you have made it possible for me to keep a presence in our folk music world from afar now that playing music is not there for me.

My brother bought me the set for Christmas. I just got it, today and am listening to the second one for the first time. Almost done. Have listened to the other one once, but will be listening to them both over and over for the next few days, so I can get them set in my head, who is performing what song, etc. Anyway, I LOVE IT!!! SO much Truth, Beauty, Heart, Integrity, incredible talents and songs. What a wonderful thing you have all wrought! Thanks so much. It is so NEAT to open it and see my friends listed as the producers AND to get to hear my friends and others I have yet to meet singing Utah's fine, fine songs. The bad news is, I didn't get the disc by putting it on my Christmas hint list. The good news is, I ordered it from the "Wholesome Wench" site yesterday. I don't really consider the bad news worth worrying about. I somehow managed to stumble through the R.B. website procedure with very little time lost, but mostly by dumb luck. The Grammy decisions are *announced* on the national telecast, which this year will be a bit earlier, end of this month. The decisions are being *made* right now, as those of us who are voting members of NARAS have just until this coming Thursday to get our ballots in before the deadline.
The national TV telecast does not usually include the folk categories, but they ARE broadcast live on the internet at www.grammy.com just before the "regular" telecast takes over.

For those who cannot watch it live - as each award is announced (including the pre-telecast folk awards) it will be posted on the Grammy web site. They'll post a list of all the nominees in each category up there at the beginning of the show, and then as each award is given out, the winner is changed from black to red type on the web site. So you can find out the results at any time by going to their web site www.grammy.com

Silliness aside, I am so glad for all involved with this wonderful album, proud of those of you that I have a personal acquaintance with (some of you well enough to love), and especially pleased with what the nomination itself means in terms of recognition of Utah Phillips and his importance and impact (related, but not synomyns) on music and important sociocultural reflections and issues indigenous to these united states. Utah himself stands as a metaphor for the power and effectiveness of song, in general, and folk music, in particular, as messenger of real people in real times.

I just got my CD in the mail a day or two ago, and I am not at all surprised it got a Grammy nod! SO many wonderful songs, so many great performances!

I haven't even had time to digest them all, but Dan's rendition of "Queen Of The Rails" practically has me in tears every time. Then Mick singing "Hallelujah! I'm A Bum!"* just makes me break out grinnin'!   And all the other wonderful songs from Utah and others, performed so freakin' well!

We're setting off for Boston on the 8.30am coach out of Portland, on Friday. We will arrive in LA at about 7.00pm their time, 10.00pm EST.

Saturday morning at 6.00am I will get a wake up call from John McDonald, who has a morning radio programme in the Portland area, for a live report from LA and from then on it will probably be a busy weekend.

I am so glad that Kendall's surgery isn't happening until the 16th February - at least, next week, we will have time to decompress properly.

Pretty close to the same deal with us - we're getting in at 5 in LA, I think.

As far as winning - while it would be nice, I don't really expect it to happen. Every album nominated this year is exceptional, and some have received very wide recognition. That doesn't mean our album isn't good or deserving - just that the other are also good and deserving.

The way I look at it, we're not going to collect an award (though all nominees do get medallions - when would you wear it, that's what I want to know) but to celebrate the album, Utah's legacy and basically have a lot of fun doing something way over the top.

This is a Facebook message I got from Rik Palieri, who put together the wonderful YouTube production of Singing Through The Hard Times.


Jacqui, As I said in today's interview this CD was a gift for all of us. Something we all did because we cared about Utah and his music. Now with this press we are also sending out a message to the big world of music, that our home grown music is also important and deserves recognition.

Utah was such a great mentor and friend who always was trying to help us with the trade. Now it seems like once again Utah is sending us his helping hand, helping us all to grow.

When I set up all the pictures and memorabilia, I also lit a candle in his memory . There was a powerful feeling in that room. I was so happy that I had the chance to tell his story and our story with this wonderful project. So many thanks to you Jacqui, Kendall and Dan for making this all come together.

Have a great time in LA, and no matter what happens we are all ready winners as we had the chance to honor our dear friend and bring his music to many new listeners!

I think that, like Utah's music, this award is for all of us who love the 'homegrown' music.

Welcome back Art!

we had a great time today, at the Lifetime achievement awards, which included tributes to some luminaries I really appreciated, like Honeyboy Williams, Leonard Cohen and Loretta Lynn. There was even a tribute to Thomas Edison, and it doesn't get any more luminary than that!

The nominee reception was great fun. Photos from today are forthcoming (some are already up for those on Facebook, including two on my public page. You can access these even if you don't do Facebook. No cameras allowed at the Staples Center, so pictures on the red carpet will be cell phone pics, and then all cameras off for the ceremony. Sorry guys.

It's great hanging out with Jacqui, Brendan, Cathy Fink an d Marcy Marxer, and Charlie Pilzer, among many others. And we're thinking about all the folks who deserve to be here, who made this album work with their love and their time and their talent. I'm especially thinking of Jean Ritchie, since reading the update on her gradual recovery. And Kendall, whose recovery is also too slow, but he was asking for it.

And I'm kind of surprised at all the music considered "not big enough for Prime Time". Classical and folk and spoken word, I kind of expected to be on the low-key end of the spectrum, but not these:

The great variety of music out there is great. But the Music "Biz" is bland as a... really bland thing (I was going to say "bland as Hell," but according to most accounts, Hell is anything but bland).

It occurs to me (I'm slow) that the reason that the REAL honor is in being nominated is that the CD had to be specifically chosen, had to be so good that someone(s) said, Hey, this album needs to be in the lineup!

After all the nominations are in, the selection depends much more on mood, clout, persuasiveness and the humiditytytyty of the day.

I'm glad that it was Loudon that got it. We did real good getting nominated.

It has been an interesting weekend - we have seen some amzing acts this evening, even if some of them wer definitely NOT to my taste, but I can now say that I was in the same room as Placido Domingo and Andreas Bocchelli, two of my heroes, in addition to yesterday being in the presence of Leonard Cohen.

Kendall's daughters have been wonderful companions and I have loved spending time with them.

I'll be glad to be heading for home tomorrow.

You and Utah were recognized for the excellence of the music - and you who were there at the ceremony got to hang out with some real legends (like Leonard Cohen and, of course, Weird Al).

(Now if Jacqui had writhed around on a rope trapeze, wearing only a flesh-colored unitard and spraying water on the crowd, who knows? ... )

I thought Pink and the trapeze act was great, and almost gave it a standing ovation in my living room. Same for Lady Gaga and Elton John, Same for Andrea Bocelli and Mary J Blige. Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks: Swift began with a lot of off-pitch moments but leveled out.

Was that the Morse contingent yelling when the recording nomination was announced. I heard the 'whoops' and thought, "They ARE there!"

I believe that the red nose picture was taken at the nominees' reception the night before. At least, the lovely red ensemble was what Geeta wore to that, and she was wearing a magnificent purple number for the award show.

I've just got up - at about 1.30 - I was totally wasted this morning so stayed in bed reading all morning.

The travel back was on time and OK but does get very tedious. I had a good time at the Grammys, but not an experience I would want to repeat, as if there will ever be another chance!

I finally got home at 2.00am - arrived in Boston at 10.00pm but no bus until 11.25 and then a two hour journey to Portland. Poor Kendall also had to stay up until then to come and get me from the station so we both went to bed very late, but not before he was given his Grammy medal, which he has been wearing all day now!

He will be cooking dinner. I'm going to check the net and then veg out in front of the TV and catch up with the stuff I put on tape over the weekend.

Pics will follow. I've still got to download mine and get hold of whatever Deb took. Dan downloaded a lot from Charlie Pilser and I'm hoping to get copies and do a set on flickr that I can post here, but probably not today.

Charlie Pilzer got good pictures of us in our finery on Sunday, at the hotel - but we'll have to wait until we can get them from him. It'll take me a couple of days to catch up around here and upload photos.

Kendall, now if you'da done a tribute to the Mammas & Pappas and mebbe done the lead on "California Dreamin'" things mighta turned out different!

Seriously though, I deeply admire what Kendall, Jacqui and Dan have accomplished together. It is a CD that anyone would be proud to own and I am happy to count myself among those who do.
