Subject: RE: Folk music San Antonio? From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 09 Dec 09 - 12:41 PM I can't speak to folk music or venues in San Antonio, but for fans of traditional jazz, one of the best groups anywhere is Jim Cullum's Jazz Band which appears at The Landing, on the Riverwalk. They have been featured on public radio for many years with their "Live From the Riverwalk" series. They tend to focus on blues, "hot" jazz, honky-tonk and other older forms. |
Subject: RE: Folk music San Antonio? From: GUEST,Sally's Garden Date: 09 Dec 09 - 03:56 AM Hi! I'm John from Sally's Garden www.sallysgarden.org in San Antonio. As was already mentioned, we have a Celtic session every Sunday at 2:00 at Nine Lives Books. There are also a couple of Celtic sessions on Thursday night, but that doesn't help the original poster. If Sunday afternoon doesn't work, we could get my band and maybe a couple of other people together on Saturday, I have a concertina player friend here in SA that would probably love to commune with a fellow squeezebox wizard. As for other folk sessions here, there are none that I know of, at one time there was a bluegrass session, but I think that is gone. There are open mike nights at Casbeers and The Cove which are somewhat folk oriented, but they are on Tuesday nights. |

Subject: RE: Folk music San Antonio? From: Allan C. Date: 06 Dec 09 - 05:30 AM Barb'ry, it appears that San Antonio's folk scene is a hard nut to crack. I've been planning a visit there in the somewhat distant future and have done extensive online research attempting to discover precisely what you are also seeking. All I have been able to find is a series of house concerts and a few blues performances; but no open sessions are advertised. Despite Texas' being the home of the huge Kerr Folk Festival, and its having, for instance, a remarkable membership in a mountain dulcimer society, Texas holds only a very small handful of Mudcatters who might be of assistance. Of these, I might suggest Jed Marum as one you could PM with your question if he should happen to miss this thread. He can also be contacted by way of his website at JedMarum.com. I believe he sometimes plays gigs in San Antonio and may have a contact or two there. |
Subject: Folk music San Antonio? From: Barb'ry Date: 05 Dec 09 - 01:58 PM Hi Does anyone know of any folk music going on in the San Antonio area 11th - 13th December? My husband (singer and concertina player) is over on what he calls a 'conference' and wants to know if there are any sessions he could take part in/visit. (He is house trained...) Barb'ry |
