Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Cobbler Blackeyed Biddy , Scottish From: GUEST,Shaneo Date: 07 Dec 09 - 03:28 PM Thanks very much Jim, you have been a great help as always. As you may know I run the site Irish Songs Guitar Chords and this song has being requested for chords to be added, I thought the song would be more well known than it is. There's some great lines in the song some of which I don't understand but I get the gist of it. Thanks again Jim. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE COBBLER (T. T. Kilbucho) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Dec 09 - 02:54 PM This song started life as a poem, apparently. From The New Scots Reader by A. MacMillan (Edinburgh, Oliver and Boyd for the Burns Federation, 1972), page 51: THE COBBLER T. T. Kilbucho The auld fowk garr'd me cobble But ma cobblin' days are duin Syne merrit intae siller noo I'm by wi' buits an' shuin. The lave* can hae the blessin's [remainder] O' affection an' romance, I was still amang their bauchles* [down-at-heel shoes] Had I skippit sic a chance. The dominie had notions Tho' the twa-some har'ly met, While Gossip blam't the meenister For hingin' roun' the yett.* [gate] The lawyer kenn'd 'er tocher,* [what she was worth] 'Twas his preevilege tae ken, But wi' nocht save needfu' business Was that worthy askit ben. The laird gat interestit Suin's he saw 'er in the pew An' cam' tae ilka service syne Afore attendin' few. The preacher thocht 'im pious 'Cause he didna un'erstaun, But the countryside gaed speechless Gin she taen the cobbler's haun. [There might be more, but that was all I was able to extract.] [I was also able to learn that T. T. Kilbucho was the pseudonym of Thomas Todd of Kilbucho; and that he wrote several books: Gathered in a Lowland Glen, 1954 Clachan and Countryside, 1956 A Shepherd's Years: Poems, 1961 Sixty Rural Years, 1968 From a Shiffeneer Drawer, 1974 My Rural Sojourn, 1975? The Best of Kilbucho, 1981 Kilbucho's Latest, 1990?] |

Subject: Lyr Req: The Cobbler Blackeyed Biddy , Scottish From: GUEST,Shaneo not logged in Date: 06 Dec 09 - 10:47 AM The Cobbler was recorded by Blackeyed Biddy who I'm sure must be a Scottish folk group by the accent while singing. I have a lot of the song here from what I could understand while listening to the song, but there are some words I can't make out. Any help would be appreciated. _____________ Well the old folks got me cobble but my cobblin' days are done Soon married and ...come by wi' bits and...
