Good news update !
My daughter tells me she is happy to convey me from Newburgh to Freddy's Back Room in Brooklyn, NYC, for their Solstice Celebration with informal singing, food and partying on Dec 20th, and she assures me that adverse weather conditions won't present a problem to her as she drives an SUV 4WD vehicle (which has similar attributes to the Landrovers we have here in the UK, I gather). One of the organisers of this event has been in touch by e-mail (thanks Steve for passing on my request!) and I'm looking forward to meeting him, and the other singers/musicians who will be there on Sunday evening.
Furthermore, my daughter has organised a pretty eventful social/music schedule during my visit, including attending another solstice folk event, the next day !!
Thanks again to all in the Mudcat.
Anne XX

I wish to take this opportunity to sincerely thank ALL of the lovely Mudcat Angels ---- Joe Offer, Dave Ruch, Steve Suffet, SINSULL, and bbc/Barbara, who have taken time out from their busy schedules to respond to my appeal for information on Newburgh/NYC folk events, with wonderfully helpful suggestions and useful links. Your kindness is very much appreciated by me, and I hope that, some day, I may be as helpful in return!!
May God bless you all.
I wish you, your families and loved ones all the special joys of CHRISTMAS and that you may receive all that you wish for in the NEW YEAR.
Gratefully,
Anne XX

To bbc,
Thanks so much for your very useful information, Barbara. I've been a fan of Cherish The Ladies for a long time, but I have never had the chance to hear them "live" ! It is also useful to know that the dinner is pricey and that I could go just for the concert !
I'm now wishing that I had powers of bi-location as I am seriously conflicted between going to hear Cherish the Ladies in concert in Pawling, as you have kindly suggested, and the Solstice Celebration Pub Sing session in Freddy's Back Room, in Brooklyn, both of which are occurring on the same night (Dec 20th) !!!! LOL. What a dilemma ! The same thing often happens on the folk scene where I live, with it being either a feast or a famine as regards music events. Some weeks nothing at all going on and then a whole mess of interesting stuff all happening in different places on the same night !! I guess the final choice will be determined by my daughter, on whom I will be relying for transport during my visit.
I wish you and your Mum all the best for Christmas and the coming year.
Very Best Regards,
Anne XX

I wonder if John Roberts is performing the Revels anywhere in the area? Check his website for his schedule.

Hi, Anne,

I'm familiar with the area, but I'm afraid it's a bad time of year for much to be going on, other than holiday-related programs. The best I came up with is the Town Crier in Pawling, NY. It would be about 45 minutes from Newburgh. Ironically, this is their program:

Sunday, 12/20, 7:30pm: CHERISH THE LADIES
A Celtic Christmas

If you go, you might want to just go for the concert. Dinner is quite expensive there, as I recall. I live about a hour & 15 minutes from Newburgh, but will be pretty tied up at work before Christmas & then will be heading to Maine, to visit my mom. I'll check for PM's, if I can be of more assistance. BTW, for future trips, there is a folk club in Middletown, NY & events in Albany are no further than NYC--Old Songs Concert series, for instance.

best,

Barbara

Back off...

Let your daughter lead.

You do not need to control the events of your visit.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Anne,

Joe is right The organization for folk music of all flavors in and around New York City is the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, officially known as the Folk Music Society of New York, Inc. We have lots of activities of our own, and we publish a calendar that lists many other events as well. ( I say "we" because I serve on the board of directors.)

Please follow the link that Joe provided and then click on the icon of their newsletter to access the calendar and much more.

Also, if you send me a personal e-mail by clicking here, I will forward it to the other members of the board and maybe we can get together one evening for some impromptu. I cannot promise anything on such short notice, but it is worth a try.

You may even know a few of us from when you lived in New York.

Kindest regards,
Steve Suffet

Hi Dave,
Thanks very much for posting the link.
Looking at an on line map, Saugerties seems like a fair old yomp up from Newburgh, so it will depend on the generosity of my daughter, who would be doing the driving, plus weather and road conditions on Dec. 20th !!
Kindest Regards,
Anne XX.

Anne,

These guys are just up the river from Newburgh and would undoubtedly be able to fill you in on anything happening in the area. Looks like you could make one of their events (Dec 20) as well if you can get up to Saugerties.

Wow, Joe........... you are an absolute angel, God bless you, and such a rapid response too !! You certainly have given me lots to explore as regards NYC and thanks a million. Please feel free to change/re-name my thread in anyway that you think might be useful.
Hopefully someone will supply some relevant info on the Newburgh area.
I used to work in NYC in the late 60's and was privileged to see a lot of the American greats of the folk world in various venues in Greenwich Village. Those were the days !!!
Thanks again !
Kindest Regards,
Anne XX

Hi, Anne-
I added a bit to your thread title to make it more specific - but there wasn't much space left in the title box. If you can suggest a shorter but more specific title, I'd be glad to change it.
I think the Folk Music Society of New York Website will be just what you need.

If you need a little more, try this Google search (click).

Have a good trip. I spent a couple of weeks in Manhattan this time of year in 2000, and loved it.

I am spending Christmas in Newburgh, NY with my daughter and her husband, with some trips into Manhatten, New York City also planned. During my stay (December 18th to December 28th inclusive) I would love the opportunity to attend some informal folkmusic/singing sessions, folk concerts, or other folk events, either in Newburgh, or close by there, or even in Manhatten, and perhaps to meet some American mudcatters, also. I'm fervently hoping some kindly helpful American Mudcatter might post information on any of the above events which might be occurring between these dates.
Alternatively if someone could post relevant links to point me in the right direction, or even to suggest which newspapers or magazines, with folk events information, to purchase on my arrival, that would be most helpful, too.
Originally Irish, now living in Cornwall, UK, my folk music tastes extend far beyond the Celtic or American folk "world" and I would be happy to receive information all types/nationalities of world folk events in the Newburgh or Manatten areas.
Looking forward to hearing from you !
Very Best Regards,
Anne XX
