Subject: RE: famious English dog story book? true? From: Jack Campin Date: 07 Dec 09 - 04:53 PM It's Scottish and you've got most of the story wrong. (The books the Disney film was based on got a lot of it wrong too). http://www.greyfriarsbobby.co.uk Sandy Bells (the folk pub) is right next to the graveyard where Bobby and his owner are buried. Just down the road there's a bronze statue of the dog, where tourists regularly pose for their photos. Last year I was on my way to the Sunday afternoon session at Bells and saw DOZENS of small shaggy grey and black dogs (like microphone windshields on legs) with their owners posing beside the statue. It turned out it was a 150th anniversary commemoration, and people had brought their Skye terriers from all over the British Isles for it. They were on their way to or from the Greyfriars Kirk for a commemorative service, dogs invited. One of the most surreal celebrations I've ever seen. There are several songs about Bobby, music-hall tearjerkers or latter-day efforts in the same genre. The Greyfriars Bobby statue is said to be the fifth one. They made a whole lot of spares, as they keep getting stolen. |
Subject: RE: famious English dog story book? true? From: Jacob B Date: 07 Dec 09 - 05:00 PM Another Scottish dog story has gotten mixed in here. The part about: "A dog was stolen from it's owner and taken a long distance away. Dog runs away and retuns to origional owner." is the story of Lassie, Come Home, by Eric Knight. Lassie, Come Home |
