Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Max Tone Date: 24 Oct 00 - 05:45 PM Try also Jim Malcolm -either solo, with his band Rohallion, or as Old Blind Dogs' new frontman. Karine Polwart (Malinky and recently joined Battlefield Band, 'cos Davy Steele's ill) Sandy Wright (Russell's House), not to mention the great Martin Stephenson. Rob |

Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Robo Date: 24 Oct 00 - 06:28 PM One listen to Tim O'Brien's "The Crossing" won't be your last! And don't forget Guy Clark, older than many and better than most. |
Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Thyme2dream Date: 25 Oct 00 - 05:58 AM OH YES! Another vote for Jim Malcolm...his 'Battle of Waterloo' is quite haunting, a nice version on Old Blind Dogs CD 'The World's Room'. Rob-O? Have you heard Tim O'Brien with the group New Grange?? They are going to be playing in Kansas City next month and I'm wondering if I should go along to the concert...I really liked what I've heard of The Crossing, and have been meaning to buy it soon. |
Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Ely Date: 25 Oct 00 - 05:00 PM Iris DeMent, Jean Ritchie (who isn't new, either, but the old ones are still good). There's a band called Freakwater that's really good, one of their singers writes a lot of the material.

Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Susan from California Date: 25 Oct 00 - 06:04 PM How 'bout Patti Griffin? Her song "Poor Man's House" is a keeper, as are many others. Ditto to many of the above, and now getting into my flameproof suit :-) what about Springsteen? BRUUUUUCE! |
Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Robo Date: 25 Oct 00 - 06:19 PM Thyme2 . . . Haven't seen Tim O'Brien with New Grange, but must look into it. Do go see them and fill us in. Did catch Tim's show with the Crossing band here in Denver . . . Kevin Burke, Darrell Scott et al . . . put on an absolutely tremendous show! Great voices, musicianship and songs! Do yourself a favor -- get the CD! -- Rob-o |
Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Lonesome Gillette Date: 25 Oct 00 - 06:27 PM The BEST folk band of all time... drum roll please... Barely Bipedal, from Tucson AZ Check 'em out daddy-o |
Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Amos Date: 25 Oct 00 - 07:04 PM Andrew Calhoun is one of the sweetest gents anyone ever met; and not condescending in any respect. His "Water Street" and a dozen others are really beautiful songs. "FOlksingers are Boring" is perhaps a throwaway, and you need to bear in mind also it was written years back, and perhaps needed to be said if only to relieve his irritation with some of the audiences he has had to sing to over the years. Two cents' worth for whoever wishes it. Very best to y'all, Amos |
Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: MikeofNorthumbria Date: 26 Oct 00 - 12:44 PM Anybody else rate the Austin Lounge Lizards? (If you haven't heard them, imagine a "Tom Lehrer meets the Eagles" session - and if that idea sounds attractive, go out and buy "Employee of the Month") Wassail! |
Subject: RE: Request for new singers/songwriters From: Art Thieme Date: 26 Oct 00 - 09:03 PM Andrew is a fine fellow and that's a definite. It's been great working with him in recent years. I also think he's a fine poet (even if he does look at the world through morose colored glasses on occasion.) The previously mentioned album WATERSTREET was Andrew's first one and is still probably my favorite. He's centered out of Oregon now and those of you who see him be sure to let him know he's loved back in the Midwest. Art Thieme |
