Though Michael undoubtedly was thinking of gifted humans like Vincent Youmans, I will suggest Linda Creed, who wrote such amazingly well known songs as "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart),"You Are Everything", "Betcha by Golly, Wow", "I'm Stone in Love with You","Break Up to Make Up", "You Make Me Feel Brand New" ,"Greatest Love of All" and was not even widely known when she so sadly died at 37

Back to this old thread, because I have just remembered Bob Merrill, who wrote so many of Guy Mitchell's 1940s-1950s hits -- Pawnshop, Truly Fair, Feet Up, Sparrow in Treetops, Wears Red Feathers ... As well as Candy & Cake, Doggie in the Window...

So deserves to be recalled on this thread, even after this 3-year hiatus.

And there are Allie Wrubel & Ray Gilbert, who wrote especially some great songs for Disney ~~ Zippie-De-Doo-Dah, Johnny Fedora & Alice Blue Bonnet... Whoever conjured with their names? But what great songs.

Frank Crumit. Not a great composer but wrote some funny quirky songs - The Gay Caballero, Josephine, There's No-one With Endurance Like The Man Who Sells Insurance, The Prune Song etc. A few people used to sing these songs in folk clubs in the 1960's - Diz Disley and Malcolm Price come to mind. Sadly, I think he's more or less forgotten now.

Lorenz Hart, Richard Rogers fist collaborator tends to get a bit eclipsed because of the later partnership with Oscar Hammerstein ll - "Blue Moon" was probably the most famous song from the duo.

I mentioned the Gershwins in my OP among instances of those not forgotten; but this is, on reflection, only half true. I had a letter in The Guardian when they wrote in an editorial, "As George Gershwin remarked,'It ain't necessarily so'", to the effect that it was Ira Gershwin who wrote that, brother George just providing the accompanying 'la-la-la's.

Any list of great but little-known pop lyricists would have to include Jack Yellen:

"Are You from Dixie?", "Alabama Jubilee", "Who Cares", "Lovin' Sam", "I Wonder What's Become of Sally", "Crazy Words, Crazy Tune", "Ain't She Sweet?", "Happy Days Are Here Again" (celebrating the end of prohibition!), and "My Yiddische Mama", to name only a few.

"Crazy Words, Crazy Tune" is a HOOT. Ashley Hutchings does a truncated version of it to open one of his "Guv'nor" CD's, but the best recorded versions, both available for listening online, are by Irving Aronson and His Commanders and by Vaughn DeLeath.

Mr. Yellin's collaborators included Milton Ager (frequently), Abe Olman, Harold Arlen, Sammy Fain, Ray Henderson, Joe Meyer, Lew Pollack and Samuel Pokrass.

He wrote lots of special material for Sophie Tucker.

His filmography includes score credits for Road Show, The King of Jazz, George White's Scandals (1934, 1935), Happy Landing, King of Burlesque, and the Shirley Temple films Captain January and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

Mr. Yellen was born in Poland in 1892 and died in New York in 1991. Quite a run!

My OP point was more in the field of pop than the bluegrass/country tradition rep'd by Charlie Poole - whom I don't think that forgotten anyhow. Other examples might be that same Al Dubin whom I name as one of Warren's lyrists there of such classics as Lullaby of Broadway & In The Money. Similarly, Hart & Hammerstein are remembered as lyrists for Rodgers, & in latter case Kern also {Show Boat}; but Dorothy Fields, who provided Kern with lyrics for Roberta with songs such as Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, is far less remembered, I should say, tho not as forgotten as some [it's all a matter of degree]... & so on...

While Charlie did cover songs of others he also wrote many as well. "May I Sleep In Your Barn Tonight Mister" is probably the one most still used and remembered today. However, Charlie, for all his sins, left a legacy that is often forgotten and overlooked. Bill Munroe is called the father of bluegrass but Charlie was certainly the grandfather. Earl Scruggs used much of Charlie's banjo style in Munro's band and for that reason alone Charlie's name should live on

With all due respect to both you and Charlie, I really don't think he qualifiies as a songwriter.

His repertoire was mainly Child ballads, in most cases considerably updated, and Tin Pan Alley standards of his day,

Well some of my favourites who seem to be forgotten are Gussie Davis, Charlie Poole, and Leon Payne. All three knew greatness in their time: Their names seem lost in the past but their music still lives!

Some names of the great songwriters of the past, composers, lyricists or those who are both, are remembered and revered to this day — Porter, Gershwins, Berlin, Mercer (contd p 94). Others, just as distinguished, have left names known only to a few with the specialist interest. I will instance Harry Warren [see below] - any other notable instances?


I have just looked up composer Harry Warren in my 0xford Guide to Popular Music. Just a selection:—
