Subject: Tech: HOW DO YOU UNLOCK CAPSLOCK?
From: frogprince

I got into capslock accidentally again, by holding "shift" for more than eight tenths of a second. I would dearly love to strangle whoever devised that feature. I had been trying to get out for at least 10 minutes, fighting to write a decent email. I was still stuck when I titled the thread. Just as I started the post, the #$%^&* defaulted to normal. How, other than wait for eternity, do you get back to normal if you get locked into the &*%#@ automatic capslock?

Oh dear! That doesn't sound fun. Not that I have any answers, but what kind of computer and OS do you have? And is it a laptop or desktop? That may help one of the tecchies to suggest something.

It's not something to do with your Accessibility/Universal Access settings, is it? Sometimes those can be set to make keys behave different ways from normal. Has it always done this or is it a new development?

Is this a Mac thing? I've never heard of it before.

I have a CapsLock key that I press down to lock them on and press down again to unlock them.

I'd guess that whatever you did to screw it up would un-screw it up if you did it again.

Control Panel, Accessibility Options... you may have 'sticky key options' enabled...

You can download a little program to disable Caps Lock. I can't remember where I found it now, but it shouldn't be difficult to find. To me, that is the most useless key anyone ever invented. I would probably have trouble undisabling it now, as I can't remember what I did, but I don't care. I'm free of the accidental five-typed-lines-of-capitals curse forever. Hooray!

If you turned this on by holding right-shift for 8 secs, you turned on the Filter Keys in Accessibility Options. You can disable this shortcut in Control Panel/Accessibility Options/Keyboard Tab/Filter Keys:Settings/ clear Use Shortcut.

(On my machine setting the Filter Keys on seems to cause typing problems).

There's also an time-out setting on this, so if this caused it, it will go away if you leave the machine for 5 mins (default setting).

You can also accidentally turn on stick keys by pressing the shift key 5 times if you have the short cut enabled; this can be disabled in a similar fashion to the Filter Keys via the Settings button in the Sticky Keys section.

Mick

Steve, I hit the CapsLock key accidentally a lot, but that's not what frogprince was complaining about.

If you use 'sticky keys' (under Control Panel, Accessibility Options), look under 'Settings', then 'Options'

If 'Press modifier key twice to lock' is checked, it will cause the problem. Press the modifier key (in this case, the 'Shift' key) twice to unlock.

If you like 'sticky keys', you can un-check 'Press modifier key twice to lock'. Otherwise, you might just want to un-check 'use sticky keys'.

Fans of Don Marquis will recall Archie the cockroach who used to write poetry by climbing up the typewriter and then jumping onto the keys one at a time. The only problem was the caps lock which he could not operate, so his poems were always all in lower case or occasionally all in upper case depending on how the last human writer had left it.

I had a similar problem where holding the shiftkey down brought lower case and leaving it brought capitals. A bugger to type like that. Eventually it cured itself. Not that that's any help.
Bring back my Lettera 22!
Good luck!

Falco

Try going into Contol Panel/Region and Language options and change American English to Real Proper Downright UK English English (or vice versa, depending where you are and where your computer thinks it is). Those may not be the exact wordings of the choices but you'll see what I mean.

a program for PCs (I have used it for 5-6 years)

"DID IT EVER HAPPEN TO you that you accidentally hit the caps lock button and then had to type everything again? This little tool will allows you to sound a warning sound whenever the caps lock button is hit and letters are being typed upper case. You can configure the length of the warning sound as well as some hotkey combinations to disable the function. You can also choose to have the caps lock button function as a TAB key, and thereby completely eliminate the risk of involuntary uppercase typing. You can also choose to ignore the warning and use the caps lock in it`s standard fashion."

The original problem appears to be due to an "Accessibility Setting" that you should be able to turn off easily. Unfortunately, in Vista, they've moved half of those functions to one strangely named place (still in Control Panel) and others to another weirdly named place I haven't found yet; but if you need to you can probably find it even in Vista.

If you have Microsoft Office, you can set the "Autocorrect As You Type" function in Word to automatically insert upper case at the beginning of sentences (i.e. for the first char following a "period and space" and also to correct "double caps" so that when you type two upper case characters in a row the second one will be changed back to lower case and caps lock will turn off. The setting you make in Word will be applied in all Microsoft Office programs, and in some other programs that are "Office compliant."

If you accidentally type a long bunch of STUFF ALL IN CAPS, in Word you can highlight the long bunch of stuff and hit Shift-F3 and it will all be converted to lower case (stuff all in caps). Hit Shift_F3 again and it will change to "Initial Caps" (Stuff All In Caps). Hit Shift-F3 again and it goes back to All Caps (STUFF ALL IN CAPS). For a long bunch of caps, you can copy from almost any program, paste in Word, Shift-F3 to what you want, and then paste it back to the program you want. The Shift-F3 toggle function works on any single word that contains the cursor so you don't even have to select the whole word to make "spot corrections." Just click anywhere in the word you want to flip and hit Shift-F3 (Stuff all in caps).

Note that "Shift-F3" is an "advanced function" in Word that the redesigners of Office 2007 never heard of. Since you're too stupid to use any "advanced functions" all reference has apparently been expunged from Word 2007 Help files, and it does not appear on any of the 95 main buttons on each of the 7 top ribbons (at least in the top seven or eight layers); but the Shift-F3 "quick keys" introduced in Word for DOS 3.0 ca. 1978 still work if you happen to have RTFM for Word sometime in the past 30 years. It may have been removed in the new Office 2008 but none of the reviewers know anything about "advanced features" so there's been no comment.

John

Buy a new keyboard may be the best advice(?).

Various keyboards have different numbers of lights, and some use deviant coding to select what each light indicates. If the light is on, and typing doesn't give you all caps, it's likely that your keyboard is telling you something else (not Caps Lock) is turned on.

On an (old fashioned?) "standard" keyboard, the #1 light is often NumLock, #2 is Caps Lock, and #3 is Scroll Lock, but on some keyboards that look quite ordinary, and especially on laptops, you may have more or fewer lights and they may have rather arbitrary association with what functions they indicate. I have even seen one keyboard for which the lights meant one thing when connected to one computer, but the same lights meant something else when connected to a different computer.

If you're seeing an odd indication, your best bet is to RTFM (the manual for the computer), where you may find something that tells you what the lights are supposed to indicate. Most keyboards don't come with a "manual" that tells you anything except "plug it in and type" but it's remotely possible your keyboard may have come with something helpful like a diagram with labels on stuff. But if the keyboard didn't come with your computer it may do something different than what either manual says it will do.

This is all consistent with the new Microsoft Help File system that consists of "You're an idiot so just f*ck with it until something happens."

John

Under the theory of 'reboot first', see if your keyboard has an on-off switch (mine does) or, if wireless, batteries. Turn off/remove battery, wait 30 seconds, then back on/restore battery. May or may not accomplish anything.

The technical term is "FWITIW"..."Fucked With It Til It Worked"...

Learned that from a friend telling a story about a repair person who had been sent to a new installation of a brand new computerized newspaper typesetting system to look like the company was doing something when what he was actually doing was stalling until the ONLY tech who was trained on the new equipment could get there. He laid out all the manuals around him and started taking things out, one at a time, scowling at them, poking a bit, and putting them back. At some point (real tech not there yet), the infernal machine decided to work.

Of course there was paperwork, so what the tech put on the sheet was "FWITIW'... And the home office, later, called him on it -- "What's this mean?" He told her. She hung up on him. I don't know why...
