Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: GUEST,Jayto Date: 22 Jan 10 - 10:17 AM Foggers you are rightI think it really stands as a testament to her character. Also sometimes an artists harshest criticsand critisicm comes from the people and area that they are credited with representing. For Mrs. Richey to be so loved by the people she represents is not a compliment to be taken lightley either. Both stand to as a testament to her talent and character and she deserves all the praise she recieves. |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: semi-submersible Date: 21 Jan 10 - 06:22 PM Warm thoughts and fellowship to all the family through your long journeying, from a Canadian fishwife you don't know, but who wishes you well. |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: foggers Date: 21 Jan 10 - 02:22 PM Amen to that Lisa and Bill. Jayto - isn't interesting how Jean is someone who is so treasured by people who are near and far? There you are in her native state, but I am 1000s of miles away in UK and there are people all round the globe sending good thoughts to this most gracious of ladies. Even when it is she who is in need, she brings out the best in us along th way and that is a rare touch to have. |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: GUEST,Jayto Date: 21 Jan 10 - 01:07 PM Just wanting to tell Jean and her family they have alot of thoughts and prayers down here in Kentucky. Every day someone asks if I have heard anything regarding Jean. She has not been forgotten about by her native state and she is still very loved here. |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: Big Mick Date: 20 Jan 10 - 08:42 PM Second that, Lisa. I am currently dealing with both a mother and a father in long term care and rehab. My Mom suffered a stroke. It is a process of creating new neural pathways and in 80+ year old folks who are a bit set in there ways, that can be difficult. But Jean, like my Mom, is a person determined to live a graceful, and interesting, life. She will deal with it in the same way she has lived her life so far, and that is why she is revered as a great folk artist, respected as a wonderful human being, and loved as a good friend. Prayers and love to the Ritchie-Pickow family. Mick |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: GUEST,Lisa Johnson (Strumelia) Date: 17 Jan 10 - 07:46 PM Well at least we know that Jean is out of immediate danger and is in recovery and rehabilitation, which is usually a long slow process after a major stroke event. My own mother (born the same year as Jean, and also a musician) had a massive stroke which taught me a little about post-stroke recovery. Depending on the severity of the stroke, recovery involves varying degrees of having to retrain the muscles needed for talking, eating, walking, etc. It's hard slow work, but amazing improvements are often made over time. Jean and her family are strong positive people, and I'm sure they are all up to the job. Sending my good wishes... Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: Jeri Date: 14 Jan 10 - 07:41 PM There can't be many things more crazy-making than feeling like you have to pay attention to and take care of someone who says they want to help. No pressure: not to keep us updated and re-assured, nor accept/acknowledge the constant well wishes and prayers. We get started here and then shift to autopilot. We'll keep the good thoughts, wishes and prayers going no matter what. |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: katlaughing Date: 14 Jan 10 - 07:11 PM That's fine, imo, Steve. We don't want to bother them or you; we just want them to know, when they can stop in, that we all care and are still thinking of them all. Thank you, kat |

Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: GUEST,Andymac Date: 12 Jan 10 - 06:56 PM I've never met Jean but a few years ago, there was a thread regarding "The L & N" and I commented that I'd always thought it traditional and couldn't praise it more highly than that. Jean replied and we shared a few PMs. I was amazed that such a respected luminary would even take notice of anything I'd said. but I've realised that this sort of little incident is why she is so respected. It isn't her music, which is superb, nor her tradition-bearing status, which is impeccable; but it's because of her humility and humanity and decency, all of which are what make her so important as a mentor and role model for us all. Get well soon Andymac (Scotland) |

Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: SINSULL Date: 11 Jan 10 - 04:12 PM From a 2008 interview in Kentucky Today: Read the last line - "In 1946, she graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.A. in social work, and later took a job at the Henry Street Settlement in Manhattan. While in New York, Ritchie met other important musicians and became at home singing her mountain songs on the same bill as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and The Weavers. Since then, Ritchie has performed her familys songs from the smoky coffeehouses of Greenwich Village to the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, and back home to the forks of Troublesome Creek at Hindman Settlement School in Knott County. And if the 85-year-old has her way, she'll be singing them for many more years to come. "It keeps you alive longer," she says, sitting at her dining room table at home in Port Washington, New York. (She also maintains a home in Perry County, Kentucky.) "It wouldn't be much fun sitting in a nursing home, just waiting. If you want to stay longer in this world, you have to join in." I hope Jean's head is full of music and her days in the nursing home pass quickly. |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: katlaughing Date: 11 Jan 10 - 03:17 PM Much love and continued thanks givings from Colorado. Jon, don't worry about getting to the Mudcat any time, soon. We understand the tremendous strain you are all under, esp. with your dad's medical needs, etc., too. Just know there are many, many of us, around the world, who continue to send our love and good thoughts to you, your brother, and mum and dad. All the best, kat |
Subject: RE: Is kytrad okay? Jean Ritchie hospitalized From: wysiwyg Date: 11 Jan 10 - 10:09 AM Singing 'with' Kytrad (Jean Ritchie in nursing home) I'm taking the liberty of starting a new thread for the telling (and well-wishing) of Jean's stay in a nursing home. I do this because: 1. I spend enough time in those places to know how music can and sometimes does fill them to overflowing; 2. I have some idea how busy the Pickows and other family/friends are at this time; 3. I want to honor the Pickows' request to sing in the New Year for (with) Jean; 4. I suspect Jean is having a similar effect in the nursing home that she has had everywhere else she has been, whether she's mostly sleeping, or up and about busy with rehab! :~) So-- Mudcatters, what song do you wish you could sing in Jean's room (or nearby)? Singing 'with' Kytrad (Jean Ritchie in nursing home) Pickow's and friends-in-person who visit Jean, what can you tell us of Jean's stay? Does the staff have any idea "Who" they are hosting, and how are they treating y'all? I'm sure there have been many personal moments with one another you will not wish to share here, but please know that Mudcatters (posting or not) continue to think about and pray for you all, with warm gratitude for Jean's presence in our midst. Singing 'with' Kytrad (Jean Ritchie in nursing home) Still praying and looking to the blessings, ~Susan |
