I think I might still have an enlarged photocopy of a cassette wraparound - tho as I replaced the cassette with a CD 20+ years ago, maybe not, anyway if I still have it my poor sister will find it when she is cleaning my stuff up after I pop off the twig. Not that I had many LPs, admittedly, but it's the principle. When I play a CD I look at the track list & words etc. Rich-joy, Trad&now says they have copies of both book & CD - together or separately |

I recall originally being a tad anti-CD coz of the reduced space for info and lyrics compared to Vinyl :) However, CD production and I both adapted to that issue! Maybe 20-somethings are content with track downloads and sticks (?!) - But those make the information that folkies are generally interested in, SO difficult to access - esp quickly. The statement was made that CDs are a 'thing of the past'. This came as quite a shock to me, knowing how much money and effort goes into manufacturing these CDs. And especially how critical a part of an artist's income these sales are with the tiny amounts available from iTunes, Spotify and the like. That said, there is probably a large backlog of projects which produced CDs that are now out of print, but would be relatively easy to upload to DistroKid and have available on all the digital platforms. I have had the pleasure of listening to the result, a double CD of 40 songs. The first disc of Don himself and one disc of other artists singing his songs. The result is a treasure and a “must have” for any folkie. The artists featured include Declan Affley, Alex Hood, Danny Spooner, Dave De Hugard, Mark Gregory, and our own Helen Rowe, Ann Bermingham, Griff Bignell, Geoff Wills, Tommy Leonard, and, of course, Sally Henderson. The tracks have been collected from a variety of sources and the recordings span from 1965 to 2007. Studio, concert and home recordings, from reel to reel, cassette and LP, restored to the best quality without losing the original atmosphere. The CD was released at Woodford at a special concert featuring Tommy Leonard, Noel Gardner, Bernard Carney, Martin Pearson, Liz Frencham, Jeannie Lewis, John Schumann and Hugh McDonald, Alex and Annette Hood, Tommy Leonard, John Thompson and Nicole Murray. The CD will also have a launch concert at the National this year. I found the concert very moving, seeing such a collection of talent pay tribute to Hendo and had the CD in my hands with minutes of the concert finishing. I have no hesitation in recommending this recording, not simply because of its importance as a record of such an influential singer/songwriter, but because it is a wonderful compilation of songs that still resonate for me and are as topical today as when they were first written. The CD was produced by Mark Gregory and Sally Henderson, under the auspices of the Queensland Folk Federation. It has been a long project, supported by folk clubs, festivals, unions and individuals. Subject: RE: Songs of Don Henderson: Double CD From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 01 Feb 20 - 08:03 PM Dale & John Dengate's review from wayback machine The Songs of Don Henderson: Review by Dale and John Dengate (February 2010) Shortly after Don Hendersonis death in 1991, I had to attend the QFF Annual Dinner, on behalf of the Australian Folk Trust, to bring recognition of the fine role played by volunteers at the Maleny Folk Festival. I suggested to Bill Hauritz that we acknowledge Hendo’s powerful contribution by starting the evening with that quintessential of vernacular Australian songs – 'It's On'. Before we'd sung two lines, all present stood and sang with passion, laughter and tears in their eyes, the whole song; this was just as well as Bill started in a very low key. Hendo’s words brought back memories of the strength of political song writing in the 1960s and 70s when we did not need to rely on overseas imports to find words to express our ideals and protests. Although Don chose his musical inspiration from folk, country, blues, jazz and even rock, his words came from the Australian experience of union struggles for safer work conditions and songs of justice and peace. Many of these were sung at anti-war rallies and this was a time when street demonstrations were banned in Queensland. I still recall the thrill of singing together, as Don’s songs encouraged everyone to sing out loud- 'I can Whisper' [aka Listen]. Listening to the recently produced CDs - one of Don singing 20 of his songs and the second with top folk performers singing and playing another twenty of Hendo's composition, brings back vivid memories of past folk gatherings and parties. What an incredible influence Hendo had on this period of Australian music and his song are still relevant and entertaining. He covered so many aspects of the workingman’s life and the topical events that this collection of songs forms a brilliant social history of the time. The range of insights extend from the powerful 'Come to the Meeting' 1979, 'The Prosecution' 1970, to the whimsical 'Basic Wage Dream' 1963, to the reflective 'The Kids will Grow' 1968 to the philosophical 'What makes the Grass Grow?' 1971 Mark Gregory and Sally Henderson have done an amazing job of bringing together so many songs and recordings of top rate folk singers. The review can currently be found at http://www.shoestringrecords.tv/Australianrootsseries/DonHenderson/Hendersonindex.html but since these things come and go I take the liberty of pasting the whole thing in here: The Songs of Don Henderson: Review by Mike Ball (December 2009) Aside from my devotion to the great choral and solo song treasury from 'Classical' and Church repertoires, many of the recorded songs I re-visit frequently were written by musicians influenced by the Folk Music Revival Movement from the late 1950s on, writers who used the repertoire of earlier generations, much of it anonymous sources, to inform their own compositions. A partial personal list (bearing in mind my English base) would include Don Henderson, Eric Bogle, Ewan McColl, Pete Seeger, Richard Thompson, Jake Thackray, Ralph McTell, Cyril Tawney and others of a different hue like Flanders & Swann, Noel Coward - and W.S.Gilbert whose lyric style had a fundamental influence on the great American school of writing, 1920 to, say, 1950, e.g. Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, P.G.Woodhouse (sic!) and Cole Porter, especially the latter. Although I rated Don highly on the basis of some dozen songs of his which I first encountered during four years in Sydney and Melbourne, 1960s, he has only entered my list of the Great and Good since this double CD landed on my mat here in Kent some 3 weeks ago (Mark Gregory tells me that I was Shoestring's first sale, which at this distance I find highly chuffing), allowing me to know about and assess the whole of his prolific output. I blush at the thought that the last time we met, when he and his wife attended my wedding in Sussex in 1977, I had no idea of his growth in stature as a writer since last seeing him in Sydney (at work on making a guitar) 10 years earlier. The list above has writers who have produced not only several songs of undoubted merit, perhaps deserving recognition beyond what they have achieved, but also a portfolio of songs which reveal their great range of topic, mood, supported by literary and melodic craftsmanship and the 'sine qua non' of a lively Imagination. No doubt other reviewers, closer than I to these very Australian songs and their social and political back ground, will be celebrating this collection in detail: I have chosen to take one item on which to hang observations and judgements which apply to much in these albums. I refer to 'A Rake and a Rambling Man', No.1 on CD 2, which amongst much classy competition stands as the Champagne Moment for me, a choice which I hope is not unduly prejudiced by my having committed it to memory many years ago. We are given a low-life character, already apparently condemned in the title as a Rake, who is any thing but seriously rakish as we learn by this moving portrait of a complex and likeable personality. It has for me a special place in its category of the meditative, slowly unfolding, autobiographical-like 'tale', the Folk style equivalent of the Pop 'ballad' perhaps, something between a lyric song and the Ballad in the literary sense. It's worth dwelling on these delicious verses, realised to perfection by Declan Affley's interpretation. The lyric is matched by a Dorian mode melody worthy of the economic, spare, poetic lines. We meet a 'working' man of no particular class, encounter the mettlesomeness of a bloke who won't let the bastards get him down, yet this mollified by his recognition of the realities of life ("..There are more policemen than Rambling Men.."). Interest is kept up by the ebb and flow of the mood, ebullience and conciliation by turns, and I can't help being reminded of the English peasant-poet-philosopher John Clare (and, for his splendid bloody-mindedness, the Yorkshireman writer Jake Thackray). If Don's desire was to be merely seditious (the piece written at a time when Protest songs and such were all the rage in the English speaking 'world'), i.e. to go some way towards enfeebling one's secure feelings as City-based, '9 to 5' bourgoisees (as the Marxists would have it) he would have failed the song. His strength in getting us to rethink attitudes towards the outcast is this: understatement, all the more powerful a device because, perhaps, that is not an especially prominent Australian characteristic, though you meet it frequently enough in this collection. So many earnest songs bearing grievances fail by their fierce directness which results in the potentially sympathetic but moderate-minded to shrink away in the face of polemical over-statement. I should add that in details my politics are different from Don's, proceeding as it does from different life experiences; yet his strongly felt views and assumptions thoughout this excellent project never descend to shrillness, are never for me off-putting. Along with other songs here, Don secures our sympathy and our empathy even when the topic is tangental to one's own life and when one disagrees with the propositions: this is achieved by the wholesome integrity on display,so we tend to believe him. Postscript: That Dorian mode tune, minor 3rd and 7th, major 6th, a masterly achievement, its structure and its surprise leaps and turns ensuring it comes to me ever fresh. M.R.Ball Kent 16.12.09 |

Probably unlikely given it was made over ten years ago. Raymond Crooke has put up a few of Don's songs on his YouTube channel, but I can't find anything of Don performing himself. The reason is simple. Henderson was no great craftsman. He didn't have a great voice and wasn't a particularly good guitar player. But he did write a substantial body of "news" and contemporary "social commentary" songs. Think of the wry and Guthrie - like talking blues of Talking Mt lsa, about the miners' strike. Or the melancholy Westgate Bridge Disaster, a swingeing attack on the incompetence that led to the collapse of the infamous bridge. He never deviated from his passionate support for unionism, anti-war activism and belief in the decency of manual labour. Recently, a disparate group of left-wing organisations and individuals - notably the Queensland Folk Federation, Brisbane Labour History Association, Illawarra Folk Club, the CFMEU - have worked to preserve Henderson's legacy. This double CD, containing 40 songs, comprises 20 original recordings and 20 of Henderson's songs recorded by such Aussie folk luminaries as Gary Shearston (Put a Light in Every Country Window), DeclanAffley (Rake and Rambling Man) and Danny Spooner (It's On). This is an important piece of Australian folk history. Henderson deserves to be remembered. |

One evening, he came and sang "Put A Light In Every Country Window" and the guest singer that week was Martyn Wyndham-Read. Martyn loved the song and got the words from Don then and there. Martyn sang the song extensively at his gigs for quite a while after that and it certainly contributed to getting Don's name better known in the UK. Just for a bit of continuity.... Martyn was our folk club guest again just last week..... |

A year later in April 2007 the Don Henderson Project was launched at the National Folk Festival with the mission to raise interest and finance to produce a CD of Don's songs. The interest was there and the finance came in the form of sponsorship from Don's friends, those who sang and recorded his songs, unions, folk festivals, community organisations, folk federations and folk clubs. The result is a double CD with 40 songs, one CD of Don singing and the second of others singing his songs: Declan Affley, Alex Hood, Gary Shearston, Ann Bermingham, Dave de Hugard, Bill Berry, Danny Spooner, Helen Rowe, Griff Bignell, Geoff Wills, Terry Hannagan, Annette Hood, Mark Gregory, Craig McGregor, Sally Henderson and Tommy Leonard The tracks for 'The Songs of Don Henderson' have come from a variety of sources, recordings dating between 1965 and 2007.
