Hello , Boxing Day 2009 will see the 43rd consecutive annual performance by Redcar Sword Dancers of the Greatham Sword Dance and Play, in Greatham (Greethum)village , near Hartlepool, just off the A689.We meet up in the Hope and Anchor for a hair of the dog, and to park the zimmer frames. The performance is at 12.00 mid-day outside the hospital gates, come hail, rain, snow or any other weather the elements can throw at us.
The dance and play are fairly unique from the point of view being one of the few Longsword dances which retained it's play, and also coming from County Durham, as the perception was that Longsword was a Yorkshire dance.
Come and help us celebrate the Dance and Play by being part of the loyal band of audience members and hecklers, and then afterwards back in the pub for a good natter and a brilliant singing session.
All the best to sword hoppers everywhere
Kevin

It's a long time since I was last there.

I won't make it this year either.

Shame really.

I've been there the last few years. I'm working this year. Bugger. All the best for a good dance, mumming and singaround.

All the best from the flat lands, I regret we cannot get there for Boxing Day, would have been a great day out. Perhaps next year we will have retired then. Brian and Christine Kell

Long time since I was last there too (though I did see Kevin at Bedworth last year and reminisced a bit). Hope you have a good day.

This year (as the last several) I shall go and see Handsworth dancing, they being about 20mins from where I live now. (Once long ago, when Greatham was my regular boxing day event, Pete Moore and I skipped Greatham and made the trip to Handsworth to watch them dance. Little did I know then that one day they'd be my local side; perhaps one year I should skip here and go back and watch Redcar Swords dance again!).

Mick

Hello Mick and everyone else. Mentioning Pete Moore as you did, Pete was briefly a member of RSD and clowned I seem to remember. Another you will remember from Eston Folk Club days was Kev Schofield who was also briefly a clown. I came across a web site for Kev and a mate called Two Counties ( I think that's what it said. ) This year will be my 42nd appearance. Little did the callow youth realise. Have a good time at Hansworth, and hopefully catch up somewhere sometime
Kevin

I enjoyed the films too. It's a long time since I last saw Redcar dance at Greatham. Just a few faces I still knew - Brian Pearce, Kevin and George the exile in the singaround.

Who's playing these days (I couldn't see in the video)? It was Prim Petch the last time I saw them I think.

Mick
