Subject: BS: Perfect Present for a Father in to Folk
From: GUEST,Yulie Tide
Date: 17 Dec 09 - 12:25 PM

I am trying to get a Christmas present for my Dad who loves folk, of the traditional English variety. For the last 3 years I don't think he has really liked my presents and am keen to get him something that will make him happy. Does anyone have any ideas at all? I'm keen to hand him something on the day, so I would need to buy it in person. I am based in London.

Best wishes and thanks for reading so far!

Yulie Tide xxx

Thats a very big question, especially as he might already have lots of Traditional English CD's

Do you know what he has already? Who are his favourite performers in the Folk world?

I'm not sure what he has already but I think he likes performers like The Copper Family, Martin Carthy and The Waterson's. Does that help at all.

Have a look at this website and click on the albums link. Her probably would like one of those if he hasn't already got one.

Where abouts are you living in the UK?

Lol Villan - I think the poor lass has said 'London' about three times now!

Err, does he go to folk clubs or festivals? Is he a tankard touting beardy type?

Does he sing or play music? Does he like to watch DVD's or read books?

"Am not sure my Mum would be all that keen on that!"

Oh well, you could get her the same, but one of those chappies instead. Do chaps pole dance? Whole new thread here..Whoa!

'Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed' by Show of Hands, that'll go down almost as well as the pole dancer! :0)

Don't do that, you will never get him off the PC

Maybe you could buy him a ticket to see WatersonCarthy live in London.

They are brilliant live.

Topic records is another place worth looking at (though I find the website not very user friendly). In fact they've got a box set on offer now: Mighty River of Song

See above - the Topic presentation set "Three Score and Ten" looks mighty.
I certainly hope all the massive hints that I have dropped regarding it have been noted!

If you are rich then you could always buy him the Bronson set. If poorer then the abridged version would be very acceptable.

Blessings
Rhiannon
(who has bought the set for Mick for Christmas)

I was going to suggest either Threescore and Ten or the Watersons' Mighty River of Song. Both are excellent. Also a great gift is The Carthy Chronicles, which tracks the many incarnations of Martin Carthy over the years.

Zany Mouse, Yeah - a traddy singing folkie, would really dig the Bronson set! Maybe one day I'll get it myself? Meanwhile I make do with scavenging traditional songs from YouTube uploads and blagged copies of this and that... which I feel is rather in the spirit of folk music at least.

Thank you all so much for these great suggestions. Three Score and Ten is my favourite song that he sings. I also love the idea of getting him tickets to a live show. I might then even manage to drag him down to see me!

I will report back on the outcome!

Thanks again and happy, happy Christmas,

Lxxx

I would suggest a Lowden Richard Thompson Signature Model guitar - and it he doesn't like it, he can give it to me.

In my opinion, one of the Mary Humpries and Anahata CD's would make an excellent gift. They are two of the most underrated perfomers around I think.

I would like to recommend the Floating Verses album for some really beautiful traditional English songs.

try this Mary H & Anahata

cheers

I was going to suggest a Connor C/G Anglo concertina but leveller beat me to it!

Seriously though, albums aside how about an instrument? OK - lots are too dear but a whistle or mouth organ? I have a triangle on my wish list! Not enough triangulation in folk clubs nowadays:-)

Cheers

DeG

How about the CD of Bob Fox and Stu Luckley 'Nowt so Good'll Pass,'
as a stocking-filler anyway. Chas and Dave should cheer any Londoner up, too.
I wouldn't like to be without mine.

Being a father who is into traditional folk, a performer, with a beard, a daughter living in London, and being also interested in books and DVDs, I could almost be this relative, thought I'm certain it's not me. 'Three Score and Ten' is one of my favourite songs but that was not the reason I put the Topic set on my Christmas list. I have a large collection of CDs, including Waterson/Carthy, Mary Humphries, Bob Fox, and I recently bought Bronson on CD. So on that basis I would say that all the suggestions made here are spot on.

The best present of all - learn and sing some folk songs for him. And make a CD so he can keep them.
