Some time ago, in a thread where we were talking about funding, and someone complained about accountability, I made mention of the fact that I couldn't care less about that. I was a bit upset because I have been in your house, seen servers beside your bed or in your basement, saw the effort to put out the radio show, and been your friend, and I knew the sacrifices you had made to keep this place going. I, and others, knew the heavy weight placed on you, because you felt an obligation to all those folks, in all those places around the globe, for whom this place was daily sustenance and a connection with the larger world. When I responded to these sad people, I pointed out that even though your efforts allowed many of us to travel around this country, and other countries, and have fabulous "Mudgatherings", you who made it all possible never got to go to many. You never got to go to Europe and visit with all the marvelous European Mudcatters who are such an important part of this place. You were too busy trying to make a living, take care of kids, build a career, and keep the lights on at the Mudcat. I know this is so, because in a weak moment you admitted how much you would like to do that. At that moment I made my mind up this should happen, as a gift from The Mudcat Cafe' back to its creator. So I enlisted two formidable folks, the amazing Sinsull in the States, and the incredible My Guru Always Said in the UK. We started to put the word out, and just ask folks to help get our Max to Europe. We raised some money, not a ton of it, but we think we can get you over there, Max. I am not going to post the amount here, but I will call you later and let you know the amount. And they tell me that our beloved jacqui is a wizard at getting reasonable airfares to UK. We have many folks that want to put you up, so lodging is not a problem. You simply have to take the time, buddy. So in whatever way is appropriate for you, just know that this is our gift to you at this season of the year.

I am closing this thread, as I am not looking for any discussion or debate on the issue. It is simply here to tell Max how much we all appreciate the man he is.

If any of you would like to add to the fund, to show your appreciation for Max, you may PM Sinsull, My Guru Always Said, or me and we will take care of it.

Thanks, Max, for all you have done. You are at the bottom of so many good things from Grammies to friends like our beloved Jean, Sandy, Rick, Barry, and so many more. You are a very special man to whom much is owed. This is just a small effort to let you know that.

All the best,

Mick

I am refreshing this from time to time for those that have not seen it, and at the request of several UK catters.

Where did the time go. Holy cow.

First off, thank you to Sinsull and Mick and My Guru Always Said and jacqui and everyone else that had anything to do with this. I am touched more deeply than you could know. I'd swear this was a wish granted, but that seems to be happening to me a lot lately. Who's complaining?

So, what am I going to do?

I thought I'd leave that all up to you.

I look to all of you to suggest when I should come, where I should go, whose willing to put me up, show me around, set me in front of some folks that might want to hear some country blues, etc and so on.

I'm taking a trip to Montana the 3rd week of July, but other than that, I am wide open. Might have up to 2 weeks off.

So, let the discussion begin.

It has been about a year for me. Money to donate is hard form to come up with at this time of year. But I do have jewelry and will make my usual donation as an auction item. Let me know how.

This place is like a neighborhood.

I need to call ASAP - I want to chip in what I can, but can't do it via computer.

I've been meaning to just chip in something, however small, for the longest time, because mudcat has given me so very very very much ever since I first discovered this site -

Any amount I could ever give could never begin to match the endless pleasure you've given me

Thanks - glad I saw this just now -

Are you looking for suggestions for an itinerary in the UK? I suspect the various Mudcatters over there would happily pass you around amongst themselves, and like a precious small child, your feet would barely touch the ground!

Have a great trip, Max!

Got your passport, Max?

I would imagine the beauty of a small geographic area like the UK and Ireland is that you could cover a lot of territory in two weeks.

Watch for LTS's Tits, no matter when you go!

Conspiracy theories get everywhere, don't they....?

MGAS did a great job in inviting contributions from UK Catters to help Max come over and visit and meet as many of us as possible, and we are looking forward to his visit.

We are looking at the possibility of being in the UK in May/June this year, if health and finances allow. If you were there at the same time, Max, we could probably ferry you around for part of your stay - I have my own car over there. We want to look at a possible few days in Ireland, a trip over to France for the day and to get to Duxford Air Museum to look at the Spitfires. We also intend to take in some folk events while we're there.

Now, that's interesting Jacqui, especially the Ireland bit, might be a bit too soon to get everyone organised, but we'll see!

For those not already aware, I have a list of UK Catters who have already expessed their interest in hosting/meeting Max. I'll be happy to carry on compiling that list (and accepting more contributions in sterling - PM me) over the next couple of weeks. I'm kinda busy from now till Easter (got about 45 Folkies coming to live with us for the holiday) but when that's all over & done with I'll start looking at the timing of Max's wandering jigsaw puzzle.

Thanks for opening up this thread Max, we're really looking forward to your visit!!! Please let me know if there's anywhere in particular you'd like to go, or Catters you want to meet. Oh, and do you want time out to be a tourist too? 2 weeks might not be long enough.....

Hil

I think we oughtta send him either to Oz to find missing Catters, or Ireland on a Seamus Kennedy pub tour. Unless Seamus is doing a cruise next-- if so def send him on THAT. I bet he'd love a dueling blues break with Max?

June has some good things going like Alcester festival - joins up northern and southern Catters quite nicely, the summer solstice at Stonehenge (in the aforementioned Wiltshire)if you're interested in World Heritage sites or druids....

If you're planning to come to the UK in May this year, there'll be a session in east London round about the 15th May for Steve Suffet and co... I'm sure we can find you a bed somewhere nearby and for others, there are some reasonably priced hotels a short ride away.

jac... "a trip over to France for the day"

Sounds posh. A brie brunch with a nice wine and fresh bread, a stroll along the Seine, a pic at the tower... soooo romantic. Tell Max to be SURE to bring a doggydoo bag for the Beagle.

Bit tight for space in Gnome Manor but we can always squeeze one in if you fancy seeing the original 'Dirty Old Town' - I'll even take you to the gasworks croft (It's a used car lot now) :-)

Gnu - this would be a boat trip to Calais - not nearly as posh, but you do get to see the White Cliffs on the way.

When I started this project, I was determined that our host, and my friend, Max would have the trip of a lifetime. And when I asked Sinsull, and later My Guru Always Said, to take care of the collecting, it was the best thing I could do. While the idea originated with me in a conversation I had with my buddy Max when he was a bit worn out, I must tell you that without Sins and MGAS, this simply would not have been a possibility. You two are the best, and I thank you. My life in the last two years precluded me spending as much time as is required. Between Ciara's accident and the ongoing issue with that, both parents needing care, getting a CD done, trying to maintain a performing career, and an ongoing remodeling of the house, it has been quite mad.

Max, if it were me, I would take off on the idea presented above. I would find the time when the most festivals were occurring and go then. I wouldn't worry about transport or lodging as I would bet that there will be plenty of offers for that. Make a decision, announce it and begin preparation.

To those that want to donate, I would suggest a PM to myself, Sinsull, or if you are in UK to My Guru always Said. I love my Mudcat.

Mick

The flight is booked!

August 19 through Sept 5.

A million zillion thanks to all involved, and especially SINSULL, jacqui_c, Susan of DT, dick greenhaus and (extra special thanks to) My Guru always said for putting up with me through this process, I can be a bit hard to get a hold of sometimes (single-parenthood you know).

Got ma and pa to watch the kids and Penn State has agreed not to fire me while I'm gone.

My guru always said is officially in charge of my itinerary, so communicate with her if you'd like to participate in this traveling circus. We'll post details as they are firmed.

I am very excited to finally meet many of you, and find no coincidence to the timing of this trip at this time of my life.

THANK YOU ALL.
