Hi Les,

Yes, my Grandad & Grandma did tell of that tradition but of course I had to remind them that as I'm under age I would get the landlord prosecuted under the drinking laws, so it will have to wait until I grow up!!!

In the mean time, mine's a lemonade and a packet of crisps please xx

I have to agree, last night was memorable for several reasons - it occurs to me that we had both the most elderly and the most junior attendees with my Mum at 84 and young Jack at a few months - must be some kind of record!

And I agree with Dave; the quality of performances of both singers and musicians was pretty high. I particularly enjoyed that last song of 'While Shepherds Watched' - I'd never heard that version before and it was truly amazing.

All good stuff - long may it continue....

Thanks Dave, it was indeed a grand night - a good bit of singing on your own part.

Thanks also to Ged & his mum, Kate, Ingrid, Phil, Nigel, Steve, Sue, Jack(!), Bob, Chris, Sandra, Phil, Brian, Alan, John, and Mike.

The mix of songs, tunes and people joining in with instruments in other peoples songs and tunes worked very well and I think everybody got a couple of songs and some group tunes.

Tunes next Tuesday then with some songs as well. A walk on Nwe Years day then back to The Beech for a lemonade around 4pm

What a great night last night was! Apart from the usual Beech 'alarms, excursions and diversions' that is (these are aspects of the establishment which don't appear to have gone away and which we're going to have to learn to live with. Your assertiveness in the face of the curious and unprovoked 'anti-war' tirade from a certain quarter was admirable, Les).

As a singer it almost pains me to say that the quality of musicianship was really excellent. But the singing was pretty good as well. As far as I could tell eight month old Jack seemed to enjoy the proceedings as much as I did (perhaps in years to come he'll hear a melodeon and wonder why it reminds him of something).

The fall of snow outside the window just added to the atmosphere.

A new chapter in Chorlton Folk for 2010! No more Ozzy Osbourne, no more Motorhead, no more tatooing and piecing in the back bar. I think we should cease trying to get the radio speaker from the front bar into the birdbath. I personally have given up ....... erm was was it now secret trading of cigarette cards.

However the burning of persons as effigy or real will continue. Suggestions please

Finally contacted the new Landlord today. The Beech will open tomorrow and we are most welcome to sing and play tunes this Wednesday and as many other Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays as we fancy!

So, if you want a very informal night of songs mostly but ........... and certainly a bit festive, if you just fancy saying welcome to the new Landlord of what should return to being the best little pub in Chorlton, come a long on Wednesday and join us.

Music from the choir of St Clement's Church and Bucephalus Brass along with a hog roast supper and a visit from Father Christmas. Horse and Jockey pub, Chorlton Green, Beech Road, Chorlton. From 6pm.


Just been past The Beech. People painting knocking, hammering and employing Elves to 'refurbish' pub. When I mentioned singing and playing tunes - told we are most welcome! More news as it happens from CNN Chorlton - or should that be Radio 4 Chorlton?
