There was a rumor a while back that Brett and Wakana were approaching Chez Sinsull. I wonder if she were there or if the door was unlocked. It would be sad if we found them frozen to the door stoop.

Ugh! It's been snowing all afternoon up here in Midcoast Maine.

The pie looks good. I wonder how it tastes. Geez, the crust looks a little fragile. Oh, damn, a piece just broke off in my hand...

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Could have sworn I posted to this before I went to work.

Woke up this morning feeling like doggy doo. Went to bed last night feeling like doggie doo. GI distress, headache, general aches, etc. -- same symptoms as my coworkers just got over.

Had to go to work (noon-3) or I wouldn't get paid for tomorrow, but decided to avoid sharing this malady with the gathering, we'll stay home.

Really wanted to make it, but I'll probably be asleep by 10. And with the weather the way it is (though it wasn't bad driving on the way home heading west), I doubt we'll be howling at the blue moon tonight either.

By the way, I got a package from my sister today including an INCREDIBLE Christmas gift -- an original videotape of the Smenge's "The Last Polka"!!!! NOT available on DVD. Wonderful! If I didn't feel so glucky, I'd watch it tonight.

Linn

Happy New Year, Peter and joanne. Brett is taking a nap. Wakana is helping me set the table and get the last of the dishes prepared. Ham is in the oven. Wine is chilling. I am off to take a shower.

My allergies have been such that y'all would think I was carrying the plague anyway. So, it seems to have stopped snowing here, at least for now, but it looks like farther north sucks a bit.

Have fun, even if I'm not there, and Happy New Year.

Food for an army but Jacqui and I cracked open the champagne. All bets are off for dinner. Happy New Year all. Brett and Wakana look great. They are eager to get home and sleep in their own beds. I just went outside to cool off. The kitchen is brutally hot. They are comfortable Go figure.

Sinsull-

Everything was delicious! And there certainly was plenty of it.

Kendall was in good humor, and it was great to see Brett and Wakana after so many years. Brett had a nasty cold but it's hard to feel sympathy for someone who has been residing on a tropical island for years.

Everyone was excited about the Grammy nomination, and there are plans to fly out to LA for the presentation evening later in January. Maybe we all should go and start chanting.
I do hope that if our favorite producers are called up on stage for the award that there is no major wardrobe malfunction.

The driving wasn't bad running home before midnight but coming down in the late afternoon traffic was tied up in knots as a car BBQ'd in the breakdown lane (no one was injured). I'm glad that we planned for extra time.

Nice to be home!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I hit the bunk at 9:30 last eve and turned the phone ringer and answering machine volume off just in case. Got up about 2:30 and dressed. Went outside at 2:40 to look at the moon and the moonlight glistening on the snow. It was so calm, so serene, so peaceful. Came back in at 2:41 and got back under the blankets with my clothes still on and swore never to do that again. I am still cold. Idiot!

Brett and Wakana are off to the airport. Everyone else has gone home.
Seamus is nestled in on the sofa for a long winter's nap. I am going to join him.
There was enough food for an army and lots of leftovers including champagne, I have to find younger friends. Tom's dips were amazing. And I actually loved the raisen sour cream pie. Definitely needs a name change - Dried Grape and Cream Delight, maybe? Pies and chocolates and cheeses and a new Nunzilla for whom no one is taking responsibility.

Got a call from (I thought) Big Mick and rambled on for a while until I was told "This is Pat Paterson." So sorry, Spaw but I think someone spiked my lemonade.

Happy New Year all.

Micca - they were all on their way to bed by the time Dick Clark announced dropping balls which led to a folk tale from Wakana about raccon whose...ask Brett about it.

The Raspberry Liquor is beautiful. Served it in dark chocolate cups. Jacqui and i are planning an afternoon of bad movies and good drinks. We toasted you, Micca. But no phone call. Sorry.

Mary

So did you ever tell Kendall he'd forgot to pull his pants up after leaving the john or did he go home that way?   You definitely need younger friends............

We sang "Holy Ground" for you at 9pm (your midnight) -- did you hear it, or do we need to sing even louder?

"... You're the girls I do adore,
And still I live in hopes to see
The Holy Ground once more."

Seemed fitting, somehow. Though Charley, Kendall and Brett aren't girls of course. But still I lives in hopes to see them once more (or in Brett's case, once), too.

Happy New Year!

Edmund and I were very, very quiet. After a duck dinner, we watched a movie -- Monsters Inc., not bad but no earth-moving experience, either -- and then I went to bed at 10 over Edmund's protests. He stayed up till midnight (on general principles) and then retired himself, accompanied by Bill the cat.

We were sincerely sorry to miss the Mainiacs' New Year's Eve party, but if you were having weather misery it's just as well we stayed at home. Today I feel refreshed and rested for the first time in weeks, if not months.

It's been snowing here off and on since Wednesday, not heavily but quite persistently; yesterday's driving was downright treacherous. Edmund is out clearing the mouth of the driveway so we can go out to see the new Sherlock Holmes. The family feast -- usually the last blow-out of the holiday seas -- is tomorrow, and then we have to buckle down to get ready for the return to work. Bleah.

Hey Mick, there's a pub in Sonoma that always hires MichaelR's Irish band for an "Irish New Year's party." It's a blast, and the best thing about it is that they celebrate the New Year on Iris time -- i.e., 4pm here. A little later where you are, but still it could work well for you. At that rate, you could play tunes til 3am, and still be tucked in bed by 11:30.

It did have some entertaining fake Maine accents. All the evil dude wanted was the children anyway. Big deal.

I don't know why, but whenever the weather gets really cold and snowy, I love watching colder, snowier movies. 'The Savage Innocents' (with Quinn the Eskimo), 'Jeremiah Johnson', 'North to Alaska', 'White Fang', 'The Red Tent'... OK, maybe not that last one. Anyway, I watch them and I feel warmer. Then my power goes out and I head to your house. (Seriously, it's the ice storms that do that shit.)

Is this all off-topic? Does anyone care? I'm still sorry I missed the party. I haven't had real ham in ages and I missed Brett &
Wakana. Maybe we should do next year in Guam?

I'm in for the duration and taking the opportunity for a couple of really lazy days - I was too tired New Years Eve to stay up late - the spirit was willing but the flesh was definitely weak!

January will be a busy month so a few days total R&R will probably be a good idea and with the snow piling up there's a damn good excuse not to go out at all.

"I'm all right, Jack -- I'm inboard" is how my dear old Dad put it. Most definitely *not* a Mudcat theme song, and rarely heard (I'm sure) among the Mainiacs.

It's still snowing here. Edmund is out hunting and gathering, and we are actually almost ready for the final events of the Ottawa festive season -- a call on a sick friend, and the Chaplin family dinner.

Roll on Spring, say I. Like Kendall, I have always wondered why we celebrate New Year in the depth of winter. The first of May would be perfect.

Giok... everyone knows it was a joke... an old one, but...

And, as for the snow squall, I am gonna do what my Gramma Owens used to do... add some extra turnip and carrots to the stew and accept the fact that I live in a wonderful part of the world, even if we get a few inconveniences now and then. And, I have new shingles on my roof so the 120kph winds don't worry me as much this year.

I haven't been snowed in since I was a boy. I remember one time it was two weeks before we got plowed out. Snow up to the telephone wires and that is no joke. My brother in law had a 1934 Ford, (Bobert will love this) and it started after a while, but it would not move. The grease in the transmission and differential was so cold it stalled the engine.

Actually, my question was a serious one. Why?

It's a fair question, Kendall. I seem to remember from my long-ago past as a Renaissance Faire staff researcher that in 16th century Europe, the new year was celebrated on March 25. Not even the first of the month. Look up "New Year" in Wikipedia for a variety of dates celebrated by a variety of cultures. Here's what it says about March 25:

"In Annunciation Style dating the new year started on 25 March, the feast of the Annunciation. This was used in many parts of Europe in the Middle Ages, and was the style introduced by Dionysius Exiguus in AD 525. Annunciation Style continued to be used officially in the Kingdom of Great Britain until 1 January 1752, except Scotland which changed to Circumcision Style dating on 1 January 1600, the Act being passed on 17 December 1599.[18] The rest of Great Britain changed to Circumcision Style on the 1 January preceding the conversion in Great Britain from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar on 3/14 September 1752. The UK tax year still starts on 6 April which is 25 March + 12 days, eleven for the conversion from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar plus a dropped leap day in 1900."

Reading that page, it looks like we can blame January 1 on Rome.

Tom and I were snowed in for 3 days in April 1982 (a couple months before our June wedding). My boss kept calling to find out when I could get to work -- the town couldn't get a plow down our road even with the town clerk living next door! (Those of you in New England know what that means -- the town was SHUT DOWN!)

They finally got a gigantic front end loader through, which made my boss very happy.

This was back before the road was paved; not sure whether that made any difference or not.
