It is heavy, so have it with plain boiled rice instead of chips.

My son told me he was getting me an E string for Christmas, with the other five strings & the rest of the guitar to follow on an annual basis. Then he went shopping; when he came back, he said they were out of E strings, so he'd got me an A string. He then told me he'd get me the B string next year and the C string the year after that, which spoiled the effect slightly. Good gag, though.

There's a tuning for you - EFGABC. I bet Nick Drake didn't get round to that one.

In which case, Will, the answer has got to be: "It depends. What scale length, tuning(s), style(s), etc?" or "Possibly."

But thanks for explaining the question.

Pip - be thankful it was guitar strings your son was getting you for Christmas (:-) - I've just changed the strings on a very nice violin. Price: £48. I could get a few sets of Elixirs for that!

A double bass playing friend of mine once mentioned that he'd paid £1,000 for a new set of strings...

This thread is all about string weights and tensions.

IMHO I don't think a 42 is gonna work as well as a 34 and it might be overstretched. It is a 4th not a 3rd but wouldn't be out of place on a mando cello or something like that.

I'm with EtV on that. Make the 42 a 34 or 36.

The standard D'Addario "medium" string set for an acoustic guitar is:

                   13, 17, 26, 35, 45, 56

Perhaps you should try what you have and replace the one or two strings (if you don't like them) when you get a chance?

Olddude - a full-on lap steel, such that you'll need not just nimble paws but knees and feet, to-boot!

All sorts of combos "work" but the variables are amost endless. From the style, size, and construction of the guitar itself tothe type of music you play and your picking style and preferences, the list just goes on and on. Then of course there is the construction and type of materials used in the strings too...............and how much and how often do you play?

Some players assemble custom sets but most of us settle in on something after awhile for each guitar. I like GHS strings myself but use three entirely different sets on three guitars. Go experiment.

AND WAVYFWBR---"a full-on lap steel, such that you'll need not just nimble paws but knees and feet, to-boot!" You don't need knees and feet to play a Lap Steel.    What you are thinking of is known as a "Pedal Steel" like this classic, vintage, Fender Sho-Bud.

Sirius, whether those gauges will work depends on the set=up of your guitar, what tuning(s) you have it in (standard?), your style of playing, scale length. If you become a member and send me a personal message with your email, I can send you a chart with recommended gauges for pitch and string length. Alternatively, if you post pitches and string length here I can reply with more accuracy.
