A sad day for those of us who are of the same age. Gone long before his talents could enthuse and inform another emerging new young audience/rising of musicians.

Treasured music captured on vinyl, tape, cd & HD to keep alive the memory.

My condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.

"A sad day for those of us who are of the same age."

And for those who are considerably younger. Tim and Maddie's Folk Songs of Olde England was one of my first introductions to English traditional music, though I first heard it at least 20 years after its release, and I still hold it dear. RIP, Tim.

Tim and Maddy once asked me to sing a song I had sung earlier in the evening, instead of their doing the encore they were being asked for.
I was so chuffed, you wouldn't believe it, so not un-naturally I have been a fan ever since.
RIP my friend.

Very, very sad, another of my great mentors/inspirations and folk music innovators bites the dust! Only the other evening we were enjoying a performance by a great legacy of Tim's: 'Steeleye Span'- still a fantastic band. It was the final gig of the tour and was just sublime. They spoke of Tim's illness and had been taking collections and dedicating a raffle in his name. But I had no idea he was so close to death's door. Tim was surely one of Folk Music's Blueprints (or originals)and his influence is all over just about everything that has happened in the traditional folk world since. R.I.P. Tim

Only just heard. Very sad. Thus far this is the only proper obit I've found online:

Steeleye Span Founder Tim Hart Dead From Lung Cancer

by Paul Cashmere - December 27 2009

Steeleye Span founder Tim Hart has died at the age of 61 from lung cancer.

Hart was diagnosed 12 months ago in December 2008 and told the cancer was inoperable.

Tim Hart formed his first band Rattfinks while he was still at St Albans High School. The school also generated another famous band, The Zombies.

In 1970, Hart formed Steeleye Span with Maddy Prior. The group regularly toured the United States and Australia.

Hart's first solo album came in 1979. Prior contributed vocals to the record.

In 1988, Hart's health declined and he gave up music to become a writer and photographer.

He was persuaded to perform again in 1995 for the charity War Child. He was part of a five hour performance that featured almost every previous member of Steeleye Span.

In 2008, he once again reunited with Prior for a one-off performance for BBC's Electric Proms.

Tim Hart died in the early morning of December 24, 2009.
