Subject: RE: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: GUEST Date: 02 Jan 10 - 10:27 AM Well, a bit late in posting this report - been a bit busy over Christmas with one thing and another, but thanks to all who came along for the last Beginners Tunes Session of 2009. Thats to say; Kate, Ken, Phil, Brian, John (JJ), Rob, Micky & Wes, Chris, Mike Brackn, Mike Cosgrave, Phil & Sandra, Martin who played a nice little tune on his concertina, and the chap who sat by the fireplace and who's name I forgot to ask (Sorry!), and last but not least Claudine who came along just to listen. Shame you couldn't make it Les, it was a really good night. The room was full and the atmosphere really good. Some good tunes and indeed some good songs also. We managed to play a few sets which was good - seems a good idea to string 'em together to me. Good practice for when people go to a 'proper' session. Looking forward to the next singalong next Wednesday. Best Wishes and a Happy New Year to you all Ged |

Subject: RE: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: Les in Chorlton Date: 30 Dec 09 - 06:30 AM Ok, in spite of the absence of my delicate and finely tuned tenor banjo 'playing', I understand many people attended and much good music was played. Any details Ged? L in C Songs mostly but not ............... next Wednesday |

Subject: RE: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Dec 09 - 10:44 AM I have had a look at The Lewes site a few times it's very impressive. I used to play lots of things in pairs but when we gathered to sort out tunes for The Beech we only had a few in common so pairing etc. wasn't really an option. We are sticking with calling it Beginners but I think everyone who comes can play most things at a decent pace. Not sure whether to call it 'Improvers' as they do at Shrewsbury Festival or to stick with Beginners. That would suit me as I don't learn or play things very quickly. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: Will Fly Date: 27 Dec 09 - 07:00 AM I haven't been to any beginners' sessions - I usually learn what I want to learn from the music or by ear and then play them, if I know them competently, at a session. However, it seems to be the norm to put 2 or even 3 tunes into a set - and there are quite a few conventions as to these sets, depending on the locality. "Dennis Murphy's Polka" and "John Ryan's Polka" is a popular pairing, for example. If you're interested, you can see the local Lewes Favourites here. Much hard work and dedication there on the part of the Lewes Saturday Folk... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Dec 09 - 05:57 AM We are not sure what to do next - we have been adding 10 on at a time. We don't always play some of them but I suspect that some of us are a little stale on some. Some of us have played in other places and feel the need to put 2 or 3 tunes in sets so that's another option. Do people play in sets at beginners Sessions? All good fun though L in C |

Subject: RE: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Dec 09 - 07:28 AM Hi Will, seasons greetings and such like. We have no website as yet although it is something we have talked about. I think the Beech has settled down under new management so we might use a facebook site. I will PM you our list asap. Just off for a stagger around the glowing white joy of Chorlton Meadow and The Mersey Valley Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: Will Fly Date: 26 Dec 09 - 07:20 AM Les, I'd be very interested in a list of the titles in your local Tune Book - just to compare what you do with what's done down in my part of Sussex. Do you post the titles on the net anywhere? |
Subject: Tech: Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Dec 09 - 07:09 AM Well, we have a new Landlord, some new paint and some excellent beer. Next Tuesday will be the last in December, the last in 2009 and the last in our first year as Last Tuesday Beginners Tunes The Beech. We will start about 8pm, put the stand-up book of 40 Tunes on the tables and play slowly and often as each of those present choose a tune. We will tale lemonades and play until we decide not too. I guess a few songs will be heard and tunes not in the Tune Book. If you want the Tune Book PM me with your e-mail and I will send it in Noteworthy Composer 2. Trial copies free from the Noteworthy site. If you don't play but like the tunes please come, have a lemonade and a chat. Ditto if you might play if you knew what the score was (!). Cheers L in C |
