Subject: I Need A New Guitar Tuner
From: NormanD
Date: 26 Dec 09 - 07:58 AM

I lost my electro clip-on tuner a couple of days ago. I knew where it last was, then, returning to the pub, it was no more. It's gone off to be reunited with all those lost picks in Guitar Heaven, another sacrifice to the great gig god. Anyway....

.....now's the time to buy a new one. The one I lost was an InteliTouch, which has been discussed here before (somewhere). I share those comments I remember being posted about it being not so good on the bass strings, so I think I'll pass on another one of those.

Any suggestions, please, for clip ons? A back-lit one would be good, ideally around 20 quid.

Thanks

a 440 tuning fork never needs batteries, is always on and seldom gets stolen.

I have a Seiko in line tuner with a clip on lead. saves having an (some say) ugly Sat nav clipped onto the head.

It is also quite large and therefore less likely to be missed. That said I have left it in the pub before, usually when Ive had a few!

Intellitouch PT-10. Small and 'hears' that low 'E' OK.

I agree with Kendall about tuning by ear to a fork, I mostly tune by ear at home, but that doesn't work in a noisy environment, so this little electronic clip-on one works for me.

F-Zone FT chromatic tuner clip on.

Superior to intellitouch in my experience, best I've used for guitar, mandolin and banjo. See it here at Elderly:

Ok, I have never owned an electronic tuner, but Jaqui has one and I have found it to be quite useful to tun the 12 string.
Hers is a Yahama YT 150.

clip on intelli imt-500 with back light   perfect. i use it for guitar, banjo perfect and very inexpensive. I have another cheap clip on tuner also, works well but no back light so I have a hard time seeing it and don't use it. You can have it if you want it just tell me where to send it

The Joyo JT-22B is a prettyb good cheap tuner - has a setting for bass, violoin and ukelele as well as guitar and chromatic, with a back light and all. £15.99 in our local shop.

It doesn't seem to matter what I pay for the those digital clip on tuners, they always give up the ghost about 3 weeks into ownership by me.

It is kind of like how all the wind up watches (remember those?) always stopped whenever I wore them.

I get sick queasy feeling at stone circles and when we drive by power transformer stations.

Something is wrong with me magnetically. I believe it affects this laptop too.

Laurel, the reason "Intelli" is so similar to "Intellitouch" is that it's the latest installment in a long history of Asian musical product makers using ethically questionable practices to make confused and unwary consumers think they're getting something they're not. In the case of Intelli, they've given their product a name very similar to that of an established competitor. In other cases, they've made their products look almost indistinquishable from those of established competitors. The best known case is that of the 1970s Takamine guitars whos headstock logos were almost identical to those of Martin guitars.

Ironically, those "lawsuit Taks" (Martin did successfully sue to force Takamine to drop the practice) were actually pretty good guitars that would probably have sold just fine without trying to rip off Martin. And those Intelli tuners are probably pretty good tuners, but I'll never buy one because they've chosen to rip off Intellitouch. If they called themselves "Sensi-Sonic" or something, I would probably own one.

ps. Just because you have a clip on tuner it does not mean that you can tune while others are singing/playing. Yes it is quiet but we can still hear it.

"ps. Just because you have a clip on tuner it does not mean that you can tune while others are singing/playing. Yes it is quiet but we can still hear it."

I mentioned tuning in noisy environments in an earlier post, Lester, but I wasn't suggesting that tuning when others are performing is OK - of course it's rude to tune when others are performing. I said 'noisy environment' - like in a pub or club where people talk before proceedings begin and during the interval, and between (or even over) songs/tunes. It's useful too in a band situation, when I want to tune between songs while the other band-members are talking to the audience - move away from the mic. and tune using the tuner, quick and sufficiently accurate.

IMHO. YMMV.

Kendall - you're a lucky guy if you can even find a quiet place! :-)    Keep happy and healthy, and all the best to you and jacqui.

I have a Guitarman tuner - cost £10 and works very well indeed, better than my Intellitouch one on the low E. Backlit and changes colour so very clear and easy to see when you're in tune.

Yep. meant to say that the Intellitouch PT-10 also changes backlight colour from red to green when you're in tune. Small, sensitive and accurate (just like me!) :-)

Years ago, before the days of electronic tuners (or even digital watches or pocket calculators) I tried to buy a tuning fork, but I made the mistake of telling the salesman in the shop that it was to tune a guitar. He flatly refused to sell me one, insisting that I needed a six-note plastic thing to blow into, which was useless as the sound was too different and I couln't tell if the note was right or not, whereas the vibrations from a fork and a string were easy to compare, and once you have one string tuned you can tune the rest to that one.

A friend of mine the other night was showing off his new tuner. Got it through eBay, and it was $1.99, shipping an additional $5.99. Sent from Singapore (!!) it took awhile to get here but he's happy with it. It is one of those square jobs that registers red or green, no wire indicator.

I don't know why there is even a debate about this.

There is only one tuner worth buying, and that is a Peterson Stroboflip.

Anything less is wasted money.

I just got a new guitar tuner. His name is Phil and he is one hard-working sonofabitch. I'll tell you. I set him to work on my Martin and I'll bet you that it wasn't fifteen minutes and he had it back in my lap and sounding like a million bucks.

Well, except that he had that damn D string just a little sharp. I think that the windings get caught in the nut and it's a mother to get tuned 'cause as you tighten it, it goes .... almostD-almostD-almostD- *PING* -Eflat.

Pisses me off.

Phil hated it too. I hated to have to deduct from his pay on his very first day on the job, and I don't want to have to find yet another guitar tuner, but I can't put up with that crap. Phil knew what he was getting into when he took the job. You don't put out a resume with the "professional guitar tuner" claim, and then hand a guy a guitar with a sharp D string. Not on the first day.

But I think Phil will work out. He seems humble enough and he never asks to play my expensive guitars. He seems content to just tune them. Sure, I've caught him leering at my Traugott, but what red-blooded guitar-playing guy wouldn't get woody with that thing nearby?

So if you're really still looking for a guitar tuner, I'd be glad to ask Phil if he knows anyone who'd take the job. Or maybe you could just check Craig's list?

I made the mistake of getting one of those - it's next to useless. Apart from the tuning being too coarse it won't handle anything other than standard tuning, not even octave strings on the twelve string, or other stringed instruments. The green/red LEDs aren't visible in sunlight.

Tuning?
What is this tuning?
My guitar was in tune when it left the factory 22 years ago.

A little Krazy Glue on the tuning gears, and you shouldn't need to touch those pegs.

Tuners - hah!

Murray: £180?!?!?!? That's plenty to debate. I want a tuner that's only a bit of a pisser if someone "borrows" it; not a trip to the bank manager.

I agree with Murray. I bought a Peterson StroboFlip last year and realised I had been playing out of tune for the last 40 years. They are expensive but they are also excellent. And at that price, you make sure no-one "borrows" it.

Peterson tuners (StroboFlip and StroboStomp) do turn up on Ebay fairly regularly for less than the retail price, I got mine for 60 odd GBP IIRC, and it was in as new condition.

I can vouch for the fact that Seamus' method works almost as well, however ...

I bought a Kala clip-on from Pete Grassby when he was over here. It's for Ukes really, but has a chromatic option. It has been absolutely reliable and fairly accurate to my ear, backlit with colour change when 'on.' About GBL10. (Mates Rates, I think.)
