This workshop is sold out, but we are keeping a waiting list. To go on the waiting list, send me your name and address but no money.

We still have places for Georgina Boyes's particpatory talk on English Folklore at the Crown Inn that afternoon.

About eight tickets are left for the chaps' performance at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club in the evening.

The details and booking form (effectively everything in my first post, but probably easier to print in sections) is now on the club's website.

Thanks Valmai.

Stringsinger - that's the kind of info I want, thanks. Would like to do a harmony workshop, but this one clashes with another workshop. So may decide on Shirley's.

I'm also interested in the songwriting one - has anyone done a workshop with Mike O'Connor? or know how he works?

Many thanks to all.

Sue

Sue - if you want a song masterclass, then I personally would suggest the Shirley Collins ones - having had similar classes from Shirley in the past I think they may well be what you are after.

The Coope Boyes and Simpson harmony workshops I have attended in the past are not "Master classes" but they are OK for both experienced and relative beginners (although they provide sheet music, they do not assume sightreading abilities). I attended the last one (in Cranleigh) with choir hardened sight readers (I am one myself) and a couple of non-readers last time - and both thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Valmai - sorry, my cheque hasn't been posted (Christmas got in the way) ... but it will be off to you tomorrow   :-(

Well, the Steve Turner one is already there. The Coope Boyes & Simpson one will be identical to the first post in this thread and will go up in the next few days. The 'provisional timetable' section gives a little more detail of the topics which will be covered.

Thanks Valmai. So when are these full descriptions likely go up on the website?

Yes, I've done several "full" courses at those places, but they do tend to take place mainly in the summer. As I want to visit and stay with friends and family in your area anyway, I thought it would be nice to take the opportunity to do, say, a song master class at the same time, while there's not so many happening.

Thanks
Sue

Good points. Yes, we always put up full descriptions like the one at the start of this thread on the club website, on Mudcat, on TradTunes and on the club's email list.

Our workshops are mixed ability, but not really suitable for absolute beginners (e.g. someone who needs to learn how to find middle C on their instrument). On the other hand, anyone who can already do everything that a workshop is offering doesn't need to be there.

We try to make our workshops inspirational as well as instructive; I hope that doesn't sound pretentious. We hope that people will take away a few solid tunes, songs or techniques for future use, and also that they'll get some ideas to work on and develop in the longer term. We ask our tutors to make sure that the participants do plenty of playing and singing rather than sitting still being lectured.

Unfortunately we aren't in a position to offer full courses: for that you need Folkworks, Hands-On Music, the Wren Trust, and all the other excellent people working steadily away to help people perform traditional British music.

While I'm at it, you'll finding reasonably-priced Lewes area bed & breakfast accommodation here; in the summer months, there are camping and camper van facilities at Spring Barn Farm Park on the outskirts of Lewes.

Thanks Valmai. But what I meant was (sorry, I wasn't clear) - on your website, not Mudcat. And I meant, will you be putting up little descriptions under each workshop well before registration? I'm sure I've seen you do that before on the website.

Because often I like to plan well in advance, and as it would be quite a big trip for me (I'd be planning it alongside visiting friends in the area), I'd really like to have a bit of info about how the tutor works, how s/he will run the workshop, what level it's geared at, etc before committing to doing it. So, for example, I'm theoretically interested in all the voice/song workshops, but wouldn't want to do one aimed just at beginners.

Many thanks
Sue

hi Valmai

Will you at some point be putting up details of each workshop, in the same way as you have with Steve Turner? would like to know more about them before coming to one or two in '10.

(just mailed you this without thinking! but thought it might be useful for others)
