Subject: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: Suffet Date: 30 Dec 09 - 07:53 PM Greetings: A car belonging to folk singer and songwriter Jay Mankita was destroyed in one of the dozen arson fires that broke out in and around Northampton, Massachusetts, this past Sunday, December 27. Jay is OK, but two people were killed in one of the fires. State and federal authorities have joined the investigation, but that is all that I know at this point. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: katlaughing Date: 31 Dec 09 - 02:03 PM We lived on one of those little streets two blocks from downtown NoHo. Any fire was always very scary because all of the houses are so old, dry, and near to one another. This is a horrible thing to have happen. My son was just back there visiting friends the end of October. I am waiting for him to get home to let him know. He still has a lot of friends there, almost all involved in music. Thanks for posting about Jay. There is more HERE. |
Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: Suffet Date: 31 Dec 09 - 03:59 PM That area of Massachusetts is called the Pioneer Valley, and it is a region known for folk music and dance. Someone once called nearby Greenfield, MA, "the geographical center of the contra dance universe." I believe it! --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: katlaughing Date: 31 Dec 09 - 04:55 PM Yes, Steve. There is SO much going on there, esp. in the Five College area: Smith, UMASS, Amherst, Hampshire, and Mt. Holyoke. It is such a dynamic area...sometimes I really miss it. |

Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: Suffet Date: 01 Jan 10 - 04:54 PM I just learned that another victim of the December 27 arson rampage was Glenn Siegel, a jazz DJ at Radio Station WMUA. His house was torched, but thank to the quick response of the Northampton Fire Department, he was able to rescue his CD collection. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: katlaughing Date: 01 Jan 10 - 05:32 PM sing4peace, there is a Friends of Northampton Arsons group (or some name like that) on Facebook and United Way in Noho is handling donations. Here's this from the Boston Herald: The United Way of Hampshire County also hopes to raise at least $20,000 for families affected by the fires, and the Red Cross is accepting money, clothes and other donations. I am sure you'd probably find more in the Hampshire Gazette (the paper in Noho) and/or the Facebook group. |
Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jan 10 - 05:42 PM I have followed this story on the news. It sounds very much like the Seattle fires. A friend of mine escaped his home with his son and his life but lost everything. Last I knew no one had been charged. One hell of a New Year gift. Glad they are safe. |
Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: GUEST,999 Date: 01 Jan 10 - 05:45 PM IMO, there should be a place in hell reserved for people who do that kinda shi/stuff. And I hope there is! |
Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: breezy Date: 01 Jan 10 - 05:59 PM Here in the Uk we have traffic wardens who distribute tickets, so far they havent been known to set fire to any vehicle. perhaps you will pay your fines quicker in future. to U S catters , this was intended as a joke My condolences to all concerned but no doubt some will be offended. Good. happy new year Or could there be a C I A plot to reduce U S carbon omissions and we dont know about over here? Yet. Then neither would Americans. Meanwhile the car scrappage scheme of £2,000 in the U K continues to operate. |
Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: katlaughing Date: 01 Jan 10 - 06:23 PM breezy, where've ya been?! Right beside that special place in hell would be another for assholes who drag dogs to death behind their car. Can't get that recent news item outta my head. (Sorry for the thread drift.) |

Subject: RE: Folk singer's car torched in MA From: Suffet Date: 07 Jan 10 - 08:11 AM Greetings: I received the following yesterday (January 6) from Roger Conant, who lives in the area: A person has been arrested for the arson and according to the paper has confessed to the one which killed two men. The community is breathing a sigh of relief. The spooky thing though is that the man is just an ordinary guy, who grew up here, seems normal and friendly and not at all unusual. In a way this is more unsettling than finding some crazy person, drug addict, or hate-filled weirdo. Let's hope this is the end of he story. --- Steve |
