Subject: Folklore: I left a box of chocolates
From: GUEST,Joe Fogey
Date: 04 Jan 10 - 05:25 PM

My brother heard this from two sisters, sixish and nineish in Plymouth.

"I left a box of chocolates behind the kitchen door door door,
And when I went to fetch them, they were dancing on the floor floor floor,
Singing aye aye ippie, ippie aye, apple pie!
Singing aye aye ippie, ippie aye, apple pie!
Aye aye ippie, dance like a hippie, Aye aye ippie, ippi...e aye, apple pie! Woo!"

It's clearly based on "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain"

Does anyone know it, or if there are any more verses?

From The Musical Playground: Global Tradition and Change in Children's Songs and Games by Kathryn Marsh (New York: Oxford University Press, 2008), page 299:

I found a box of matches
Behind the kitchen door, door, door
And when I wasn't looking
They dropped them on the floor, floor, floor,
Singing I yi yippee yippee yi, captain's pie
Singing I yi yippee yippee yi, captain's pie
Singing I yi yippee, dancing like a hippie
I yi yippee yippee yi, captain's pie.

From Teaching Language and Literacy in the Early Years by Diane Godwin, Margaret Perkins (London: D. Fulton Publishers, 1998), page 60:

I found a box of matches
Behind the kitchen door, door, door
But when I went to pick them up
They all fell on the floor, floor, floor.
Singing aye, aye yippee, yippee aye apple pie.
Singing aye, aye yippee, yippee aye apple pie.
Singing aye, aye yippee, going to the chippy
Singing aye, aye yippee aye, apple pie.
