Subject: Hannes Wader - bio and recommendations? From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jan 10 - 06:54 PM In another thread, somebody requested a German Version of Eric Bogle's "No Man's Land" (The Green Fields of France). Turns out the German version, "Es Ist an der Zeit," was written by Hannes Wader, who has recorded German versions of many English-language songs. I see there are a number of Wader albums available for download at emusic.com. Can someone tell us a bit about Wader, and recommend some albums I should download? Thanks. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Hannes Wader - bio and recommendations? From: scouse Date: 06 Jan 10 - 11:57 AM Hannes lived in Struckem in a Windmill and he built a recording studio there. During the time there he put out two now legendary Lp's called "Folk Friends." Vol.1and 2. besides Hannes singing there are tracks by.. Alex Campbell,Dolores Keene, Finbar an Eddie Fury, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Derroll Adams,Wizz Jones, John Faulkner,Bert Jansch,Andy Irvine, Dick Gaughan and Guy and Candy Carawan. Hope I haven't missed anyone out!! Oops also Wenner Lammerhirt. Finbar's version of "Derroll in the Rain." always makes me cry!! As Aye, Phil. |
Subject: RE: Hannes Wader - bio and recommendations? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 06 Jan 10 - 10:39 PM Guest, 999 - but it's worth it! The two double 'Folk Friends' albums Phil recommends are certainly worth having, if not so much for Hannes' own music. My 94-year-old friend and I had great fun on Christmas day, listening to and singing along with The Internationale and Hannes' and Guy Carawan's 'macaronic' version of 'Brüder seht die rote Fahne / Hold the Fort'. They were the only Christmas songs we did. Hannes Wader has been a force in German political songwriting for over 40 years now. He is still turning out strongly left-wing material, but I for one think that his more recent albums are as good as the earlier ones concerning both the music, the lyrics and the voice. It isn't all propaganda (never was, not his self-penned songs at any rate). I don't copy albums still available commercially, but if you have specific interests I might be able to help you with, PM me. |
Subject: RE: Hannes Wader - bio and recommendations? From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jan 10 - 11:56 PM Thanks for all the information, everyone. I found a lot of Hannes Wader I can buy as MP3 downloads or on online radio. There are 16 Hannes Wader albums available for download purchase at emusic.com. Unfortunately, the Folk Friends 1 and Folk Friends 2 CDs are not available in the US. They were reissued in May, 2009. Perhaps they will be available in the US soon. I take it the CDs don't have as many cuts as the LP records had. I did buy three albums:

Subject: RE: Hannes Wader - bio and recommendations? From: GUEST,Reinhard Date: 07 Jan 10 - 03:00 AM One of my first LPs was Hannes Wader's "7 Lieder" which I must have bought about the same time as Steeleye Span's "Below the Salt"; and I still own both. "Heute hier, morgen dort" was one of Wader's best known songs, and the cynic Der Tankerkönig was what my first impression of talking blues. |
