Subject: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK)
From: Richard Bridge
Date: 05 Jan 10 - 06:58 PM

OK, after much blandishment, and Paddy and the landlord Peter both having bribed me with alcohol, and having taken due account of the risk of re-appearing on the 'cat, here is the eagerly awaited announcement of the Lower Coke (Upper Dogsbotham) winter sings, on the ground that no-one else appears to be doing anything competitive. Folkies do not compete, they co-exist. It is the music of the people.

Right. Here is the plan.

From opening time until closing time or earlier surrender to darts matches, darts competitions for the Sunday joint (meat, what else might I have meant?) foolsball on the square eyed God - usually till about 6-ish or 7-ish on the following Sundays: -

Jan 31
Feb 28
Mar 21.

Where? Oh, silly me! The Nag's Head, Lower Stoke, Near Rochester, Kent, ME3 9RD. It's in Hogarth's diaries doncher kno?

Promises of a real fire (maybe 2), roast spuds, maybe some Yorkshire puds, proper beer under gravity on the bar, and great acoustics thanks to the wood floor. NB if you have specific real beer requests for Kentish Beers or Beers of Kent, PM me URGENTLY as beer arrangements are likely to occur on Monday 11 Jan. Beer ties being what they are suggestions for non-Sheps beers will be treated confidentially, hint, hint.

If I like you selected invitees may, in my discretion, receive squidge in my gaff over the road on termination. Squidge comes in variants. Basically there will be veggie (actually I mean Vegan for the real fanatics) stoo, plus the adjuncts to vary it: there may be a pot of meat stuff to turn the meat into meat stoo, and a pot of very peppery and chilified stuff to turn either the meat stoo or the Vegan stoo into dragon fuel – stand back and strike match (at either end). At least that is the plan. Remember I have a dog and my lodger has a cat, so allergenists may be discommoded.

You will then kindly please F orf to assist me to be unpleasant at work on Monday.

Paddy is back in the village and may bring his banjo, so please encourage him. I propose to message Jeff, perhaps the best serial murderer on the clawhammer guitar in the county. I have just tonight met a traveller who may invite some of the local travelling families who remember the old songs to come (this is a long shot, I have been after one of the Rai to come and sing old songs for some time, to no avail – he prefers Elvis.)

All guarantees warranties and/or conditions and/or innominate terms, express or implied, whether statutory or otherwise, save as expressed above are hereby excluded. I accept no liability of any kind or nature whatsoever.

Any attendee by act or omission causing any actual or alleged damage or liability to me will on demand keep and hold me fully and effectually indemnified against any cost claim or liability of any nature whatsoever arising out of the event or their attendance.

I can keep exclusion clauses up for hours. All of them apply.

Ah, I should have said, there is an evil rumour that pubic transport has been re-instated and it may be possible not only to get a bus into Lower Coke on Sundays in the morning, but it may also be able to get one out again, at about (well, sort of about) 7 pm ish. Wonders will never cease. If you are lucky Dead Horse will not be driving it.

WooHooT! Yay for the Nags Head session. In my diary. Thank you thank you RB and thank the landlord.

Yay again like!

If lucky, Dead Horse will NOT be driving but instead WILL be in attendance, as well the dancing lady.

Will hopefully be bringing Crow Sister, but we have a bigger car so 2 more muso's can be accommodated if any live between Chelmsford and Lower Stoke and need lift. PM me.

I believe the bus comes from Chatham Pentagon. It is the 191. I have just checked and if the internet bus timetables are up to date the last one back leaves Lower Stoke at 1648 on Sundays reaching Strood Canal Road (near Strood station) 1728 and Chatham station (stop B) at 1733. Strood connects across country to Cuxto, Halling, Snodland etc. Chatham connects to London via Dartford and to Charing X, and via Bromley to Victoria. For getting to Lower Stoke you could use the same service Chatham Rail Stop A 1147, Canal Road Strood 1152, Lower Coke 1232.

There is one very odd thing. There is a 191 out of Lower Coke to Grain at 1832, and obviously it must go home to bed in Chatham so that will bring it back past and possibly through Lower Coke at about 1845 - but it is not on the timetable. It may be worth ringing Timetable information: 0871 200 2233

Thanks for that I will check out trains now. I think I can get to Strood OK so that will obviously be the best place to pick the bus up from I think.

You'll need to find out EXACTLY where the bus stop is - it may not actually be at the station in Strood, or it may. Who can tell?

If you're going to London via Dartford, you wouldn't need to go to Chatham; Strood's on the Charing Cross line!

True, but the proximity of St. Rude station and the bus-stop may be a matter of happenstance, even if both are in Canal Road...

And the time saving by cutting out Chatham (or, indeed, Rochester) is minimal.

Keep it Simple!

Catham (where the catamites come from) is also good for the line down to Faversham (hint, hint, Marian Button, Gordon, et al from that direction. )

problem is the warming is happening on the ice caps causing weird weather every where else.

Wonder can we ship this snow to the poles? What kind of carbon foot print would that make?

I plan to dress warmly and will not be taking Odetta out in the cold again. She did not like the cold trip too and from GI Wassail. Trying to tune her caused strings to break.

I still have not restrung her. Afraid too.

Odetta should be fine in a gigback on the back seat or in the boot of a car. Consult Rodgers as to strings, I think he put Newtones on for you, the same gauge he uses. If you are feeling exceptionally self-doubting he will for a fee supply strings and put them on during the interval at the event at which you meet and tune the guitar for you there and then - but you are grown up now and should be able to do it for yourself.

Richard queeried "There is one very odd thing. I think you will find that this bus does not, as it were, come back.
It goes as far as Stoke, then only towards Grain if passengers require, switches its lights out and goes like (merry hell) non-stop back to depot. A further anomily is that running with internal lights OUT is called "running light" :-)

P.S. How is the snow Richard? Are the helicopters getting through?

There is very little snow here. Should we send you food parcels? The turkey is only slightly green.

YOur helpful comments about "running light" make me wonder if you wanted to write a parody of the old Cliff Richard "Travelling Light" about the last bus out of Lower Coke...

We have lots of snow here and more coming down.

I always enjoyed the Stoke sessions.
Feb last year was the last one I attended and the summer session 2009 was a maybe at The Nags but sadly never happened so this is good news.

He is going to put the same saddle on my 12 string has you have on your 12 string Richard.
It does,nt come cheep but it will be worth it in the long run.

OK then, no-one cares what the beer is so I'll just leave it to Peter the landlord to get a barrel of whatever to put on the end of the bar. That may well make it Masterbrew or Kent's Best, although personally I think I will press him for the Burns Night special if Sheps are doing it again this year: it was wonderful last year.

"OK then, no-one cares what the beer is.."

You're joking, mate!

Anything by Shepherd Neame's acceptable, although Canterbury Jack's by far the poorest of the lot and Bishop's Finger's too strong and claggy for a session. I prefer Master Brew, although I know that you find it too sulphury! (It must be the devil in me!)

That's my two penn'orth!

Maybe I'm just woman and therefore a poor judge, but Melodeonboy, "Canterbury Jack's by far the poorest of the lot" is an unfair statement. I am liking that, also St Austell Tribute as served at The Foresters is gorgeous! Whitstable is good stuff, Sheps' Bishops Finger is good, but you can keep Spitfire and Masterbrew. Greene King's Abbot Ale is good too.

I think Canterbury Jack is often pretty foul too. Not keen on Shitfire, and Masterbrew is a bit sour and sulfur-y at the finish. Kent's Best is usually OK.

Busy now will check pub later

How far in miles is it from Strood station to Lower Stoke?

From Rochester station to Lower stoke?
and from

Chatham station to lower stoke?

I believe Strrod station is the closest but Im not 100% on that?

Fisheye is bringing me but if that for some reason does not happen the above info will be very helpful.

It is too far to walk. About 10 miles or so. If no lift and determined use train and bus as set out above.

I have popped over to the pub and Peter the Landlord is not there but Mary the Barmaid was having a snifter on her night off and apparently the beer has not been ordered yet for the 31st but she will try to persuade him (on my election) to order the Shepherd Neame Burns Night Special.

You may remember that that tickled our fancies and made us very jolly last year.

Refresh. I will try to check the beer situation later today. I have sampled the Late Red elsewhere and it is very nice with a hint of a sweetness in comparison to say Master Brew (that is not actually sweet, but more sort of round and less bitter) and a tinge of nuttiness - and a smooth finish.

The Sheps tasting notes say: -

"Late Red is a complex, richly-flavoured autumn hop ale. With an appropriately Autumnal auburn hue, this premium beer achieves a perfect balance between rich, dark malt flavours, and a strong, robust hoppiness.

A deep sweetness combining burnt notes with toffee and honey characterise this Autumn ale. The fresh water from the Brewery's Well balances the Cascade hops, specially grown in Kent, with their resinous note of Autumn leaves."

Of the current seasonal (Jan/Feb) special, the Sheps website says: -

"AMBER ALE
SEASONAL ALE FOR JANUARY/FEBRUARY

A golden brown ale with a fruity aroma and zesty citrus, complementing the full malty palate."

I am hoping to have a rocked-up version of Sir Patrick Spens ready, and maybe a Rolling Stones song I have not previously done in "Folk style".

I put new strings on Odetta this morning. At the moment, the tuning keeps riding downwards, so I think I must have done something wrong.

Can the machine heads get messed up by cold?

Will give her a couple of hours to settle and try tuning again. It is nerve wracking though. I have fear of breaking strings or doing damage to her neck.

New strings stretch a bit.   I think that Newtones do so more than some other brands.

If you looked on the internet for how to string a guitar most of the instructions are adequate. There are three schools of thought that I know of: -

1. If you have three turns round a windlass the rope will not slide
2. One turn above the string hole and the rest below pinch the string neatly
3. The fewer turns the better because tension is then less likely gradually to work the string onto or off the post, so you make a sort of knot after threading the string.

Brian Rodgers uses version 3 I use version 2.

What you definitely do not do is thread the string a tiny bit and then wind up a fat bobbin.

You get about the right amount of the string round the post if you thread the string, make a straight line from saddle to machine head, then take the string where it crosses the nut and bring that point on the string back to the first fret. Now wind.

I told him
I was aware that it is against the law "like big time" to bring ones own drink in to a public house but I did not think or know that it was equally has bad to open a raffle prize in a public bar and drink it. I learned a lesson and made me peace with the barman and wont do it again.

I am happy to report that Peter the Landlord, despite some views favouring the restriction of immigration (but taking care to explain that he had a black brother - I did not ask for a diagram) has agreed to the display of a FAF banner. Beer will be ordered on Monday, exactly what we get depends on what Sheps will supply but the order of preference is as above.

Peter Sage, local karaoke hero, (he actually is very good, he did come last year once and sang "Goodnight Irene") is apparently a mouth harp wizz and is saying he will bring his mouth harps.

Peter aka Shuffles is bringing his classical guitar so that we can assure him it is correctly strung.

Peter the Landlord wants his electric bass Rodgering.

Various other locals are expressing interest.

I will be putting up posters on lampposts manana.

Alas, Dilligaf and I will not be at the gathering. It is that time of year - we shall be at Whitehall Saturday night and most of Sunday taking part in the Whitehall Parade which comemorates the death of our leader, King Charles the First. Full period clothing, cold, possible snow and half of the parade done at funeral march speed - should be good!!

Anyway, London back to Sevenoaks afterwards. Due to my lack of driving licence, it seemed crazy to do London to Sevenoaks to Stoke back to Sevenoaks again (remember, we only JUST made the last hour of last year's January session, which was London to Stoke DIRECT!!!).

So have a great time people - make sure that you make a serious dent in those two barrels of beer, and we'll see you at some point soon.

Hi Folks
It was a bloody Bloody Parlarva but I managed to get three lots of classic cheeses for all to enjoy.

Peppercorn Cheddar.
very strong copper wired stilton blue.
AND.......................... Imported Mexican red with chillies and olives and something else that is beyond recall.
I have a large crusty loaf and some Mediterranean vegetables which I will cook this evening to last septembers Knockholt recipe which then can be eaten cold..

I am doing the vegetables solely because everyone mentioned at Knockholts dinner how lovely they tasted. I will bring a carving knife and a large tray so one can cut the bread and not smother the pub floor with bread crumbs. Due to the cold climate I think the whole lot can sit in Fisheyes car boot without fear of it going off.
I will Margarine from the local shop across the road. "what times it shut on a Sunday?

(Not that Margarine do not fret Richard )
...........................................................................................................................................
Now to another Issue
Having spoken to Brian Rogers. Iam correct in stating that,,,,,,,,,,,
Brian hopes to attend the event but having said that he may not be able to attend
so he has arranged with Richard for any instruments that are destined for a Roggering are to be left with Mr Bridge whereby Brian will collect.
Will be at the Nags for 1200. Looking forward to the event and seeing everyone .
Regards to all Pierre.

I have lots of marge, and also butter for those who think that taste is better than health.

I agree with the Rodgering summation.

About to start chopping up things for squidge so they can go on in the morning.

I will also make the hot sauce today, and we can nuke it when we get in from the pub. I want to make this very clear about the hot sauce. It is for adding a LITTLE to make your preferred squidge spicy. DO NOT POUR IT ON LIKE MARLON@S TOMATO KETCHUP SANDWICHES in "the Perishers".   The best part of half a pound of Scotch Bonnets is about to go into it.

Richards sauce blew me hat off me head at Knockers( I vaguely remember demon-stating such a fact when I sampled a touch of it from a fork by the campfire. but it was a lovely creeper and it did not burn..

I got a new hat from Camden yesterday. A labled RN Captains hat I wear it tomorow

first and foremost thanks Richard for organizing todays event I throughly enjoyed my self with superb company along with folk I have not seen for a while. The Humor and wit of Dons songs +Off the shoulder wit was excellent.

Well done to all singers and performers even the football crowd got involved, Merrily which is has rare has Action mans piss these days ?

To Paul who clearly had equal fun with my hat has I do?

( If there is a folk against fascist tee shirt available for the March session at the Nags I would like to purchase one?)

To Fisheye who got me both there and back Thanks .
I think we made a hole in the laid on beer the Red was good went well with the cheese which I am so pleased folk felt at ease to sample., Money well spent.

Richard's food back at his place was lovely but I put a little less of the sauce then his recommended amount on my food solely from past experience and it worked out just right well done to everyone.

Kind regards to all
Pierre.

Most warming on this frosty morning too - am reminded of the Ready Brek kid slogan: "get up and glow"..
Are you going to bottle it, or maybe freeze in icecubes? I'd like to have a go making some too I think, but would be nice if it could be kept unmanky in a bottle.

Jolly good turnout yesterday! Hope we managed to help the landlord with all the extra beer? Even I gave up my usual pint of fizzy wifebeater, to help the cause.

Yes, Pete, Helen Treacy is Maidstone Folk against Fascism. I don't know if FaF will be selling T-shirts at festies this year. YOu maybe able to get info at the website (above) or FaF's myspace page, or their facebook page. I think there may be a Youtube page or channel too.

Crow Sister - yes, typing error, I meant "whole dessertspoonful".

The basic recipe for the sauce is above but I used red wine in stead of red wine vinegar, and reduced the sugar. For prep I just put everything in the blender and wizzed furiously. I also added some jeera and some coriander powder. It is supposed to keep well in the fridge. I am going to put two half-jamjars in the coldest part of my coldest fridge and wait and see.

Please say a thank you to from us the land lord and lady at the Nag's Head for making us welcome and for the nibbles and chair chasing.

There were quite a few new faces. It seems the word is getting out that it is worth it to go to the end of the earth (or at least nearly the end of Kent) for a great session. As TSO said last night, these winter sessions in Lower Stoke are the best in our limited experience.

He had a teaspoon and a half of the hot sauce and had to blow his nose twice. Did you see how red his face was?

Video links (if they are any good) will come when we suss out how to upload them to my YouTube account. So all who attended, tell me here and now, if you don't want your performances online.

Thanks again Richard.

I am covered in shame - having failed to recognise John from Elsie's band (I think it was) although I did ask him once early on and he was not quite ready I never got back to him and he did not get his guitar out nor lead anything. Chagrin.

I am also ashamed to say that I discovered that the landlord was buying prepared roasties at vast expense for us. Next time I will peel a bucket of spuds so that all it costs him is the gas. What does one anoint spuds for roasting with that is vegan-edible? Will sunflower oil be as good as goose-grease or duck-grease (both of which are of course not vegetarian) for the spuds?

Yeah, any vegetable oil will do. Even easier RB is to use *unpeeled* new potatoes. No preperation needed, just toss in a bit of oil (I do 'em in herby oil) chuck in the roasting pan, and straight in hot oven for an hour or so.

Should we put up a token quid or so a head for nibbles? Not just thinking about the landlord, but that bluddy great lump of cheese Pete brought must have cost a wad!

The rolls and the spuds yesterday were all labelled "vegetarian". Well, the packets they came in were. I read it for myself, and told those I thought needed to know.

Squidge costs close to nothing to make.

If anyone wishes to contribute to the cost of Pete's cheese, please deal with him direct. I think it was from Neal's Yard or somewhere equally expensive and guess the likely cots as maybe a tenner or a bit more.

Many thanks to Richard, and to the nice folks who run the Nags Head.

I had a marvellous day, thoroughly enjoyed the whole business, and, thanks to John B and Janet, didn't have to wait an hour in Strood, but was taken straight home.

If I may just take issue on one point, Richard. "Never mind John, I think Don drank your share".

Do you think I was slacking then? I drank ever so much more than that, but thanks to the lovely lady behind the bar producing a number of cups of black coffee during the six hours, I was still vertical on arrival home, and the dog-house remained unoccupied.

Also thanks to Pierre for his kind remarks on my humour and wit..........Must have been the Kent's Best improving my performance, or the Late Red dulling his critical faculties.

Thanks all round, so I don't miss anyone out

P.S. Not a smidgeon of hangover this am. Wife says there's NO justice.

All power to your elbow and may there be many more. Since we have not had the pleasure meeting before there is no reason why you should ever know me from Adam, but I hesitate. We may have seen one another in the distant past at a Pete Hicks afternoon session in his pub.

Brixton Bert ?? I knew him from drinking at my local pub (one of them). Great stories of riding his Ariel Leader around the dark wet streets of South London and burning off his mates riding their Triumphs and BSAs.
We played together just once ~ he didn't like melodeons nor their players much.. I remember he played an impromptu song set including Frankie & Johnny and throwing himself down on the floor at the end of the song, everybody thought he'd had a heart attack !
He would get his racing tricycle out every Christmas Day and cycle 3 miles uphill to our local pub. Forever a great raconteur with tankard in hand.
Twas great in the knowing...

Hmm, a 250cc two-stroke with relatively heavy bodywork and leading link front suspension (oh, and the CG too far back thanks to the underseat tank like a scooter) against a 4 stroke of up to 650cc, little wasted weight, and tele forks? I think I'd put my money on the Triumphs but more particularly the Beezers on wet roads. I have however always wanted a Squariel.

I went the Triumph route in 1960, and found those very whippy forks downright scary in the wet. You could never be sure just where the limit was, until the point when you clambered to your feet and said to yourself "Oh, that was it".

I rode a square four for about six months, and found it relatively stable.

You might be right about the Beezer (marginally), but the Ariel would have been ahead of my Tiger Ton SS (500cc sports twin).

I think the problem with the Triumph was more the notorious Triumph hinge in the middle, hence the prevalence of Tritons, rather than the forks, but I'd still have expected the T100SS to piss on the Leader. The only Jap I fancied until there was nothing else left to buy was the CB250. Certainly hated the CB72.

What did you do to stop the square four seizing, piddle on the rear two cylinders?

Hi Folks
Left home last night for session in Greenwich. Son in charge with Friends + He had the Grace to sleep here and go to London next day,
Clearly I should have left a Baboon in charge.

Err, pop down to the local leapard health-spa for an expensive herbal/seaweed/sea salt scrub/stinky ancient mud (etc.) skin treatment?

"NO" I went Leopard spotting at Whipsnade Zoo.
When a leopard gets fed up with with one spot he just swaggers off to another spot,
Loepards can change up to a 100 spots in a day. (True)

Fisheye who usually gives me a lift to these events will not be attending this event due to other arrangements.
Now I can get to Stroud and get a cab from there but I would much prefer to give petrol money to folk passing that way who can pick me up at Stroud.

If the trains are affected by engineering works on the Sunday then I may well hit Lower Stoke on the Saturday and enjoy the Saturday night in in the Nags for the Gangster and Moles party?

Early days yet so I will make me mind up at nearer the time?

In regards to Wild Boar.
I have been told that it is tough has old boots and takes a week to digest so I may get some thing else or revert back to the Cheese and Bread.

I sincerely hope that the evening doesn't involve any cruelty to animals!
