Subject: Folklore: Mad Stone...an ancient healing tool From: open mike Date: 05 Jan 10 - 11:57 PM I just found out about this.. it is (or was) used to draw poison and or infection out of a wound. This "stone" is found in the stomach of a deer or cow..presumably a sort of calcified hair ball type object...typically it was boiled in milk and placed on a wound, where it would stick until it had drawn out the toxins. especially rabies. Also known as bezoar. http://farshores.org/p04stone.htm http://appalachianhistory.blogspot.com/2009/02/madstone-would-stick-to-wound-and-draw.html http://thelibrary.springfield.missouri.org/lochist/periodicals/bittersweet/su83k.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bezoar http://www.almanac.com/content/try-madstone http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~okmurray/stories/mad_stone.htm |
