Subject: Django is 100 yrs ! From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 09 Jan 10 - 01:37 PM On January 23rd, it will be 100 years since the birth of Django Reinhardt and I do hope that the BBC are planning to celebrate the occasion. Django influence has been truly widespread from jazz, of course, to western swing, bluegrass, classical and rock - and, of course, lots of folk musicians openly admire Django; indeed, I would suggest that Django was one of the most universally admired musicians of the 20th century. |

Subject: RE: Django is 100 yrs ! From: bankley Date: 09 Jan 10 - 01:46 PM I agree, not too shabby for an illiterate gypsy with a partially crippled left hand... his grandson David is doing well.. I liked Babik too.. they developed their own styles.. Bonne Fete Monsieur Reinhardt , et un gros merci a la parte de tous les guitaristes du monde... |
Subject: RE: Django is 100 yrs ! From: M.Ted Date: 09 Jan 10 - 02:06 PM No doubt about how important Django was to guitarists and other musicians(hey, I've got 30 of his albums!) but most folks, at least here in the US don't know who he is at all. Of course, most here folks only know the BBC as "that cable channel with all the commercials". Google the great man's once unique first name, and you get a whole lot of entries related to this:"Django is a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design.",which though obviously named as a tribute to him, and has relegated him to the second results page- |
Subject: RE: Django is 100 yrs ! From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 09 Jan 10 - 03:21 PM To North Americans, he was known mostly to the set who could afford to vacation or live in Paris, and regularly visited the Claridge Hotel, where Django and Stephane Grapelli played in the Hotel orchestra, c. 1933. After WW2, Stephane Grapelli, the jazz violinist, became popular and he helped revive the memory of Django Reinhardt. Red Hot Jazz has a number of the recordings of the Quintette of the Hot Club of France on line. Listen and enjoy! Hot Club |
Subject: RE: Django is 100 yrs ! From: Stringsinger Date: 09 Jan 10 - 03:46 PM Django was influenced by the duo that predated the HC. Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti. They were tough guys from South Philly. Eddie was Salvatore Massaro. He was the father of jazz guitar. Predated Christian, Django and others. Oscar Aleman was from Argentina and as good as Django. He was the only guitarist that Django would allow in his caravan wagon. |
Subject: RE: Django is 100 yrs ! From: bankley Date: 09 Jan 10 - 05:14 PM there's a funny movie by Woody Allen..'Sweet and Lowdown' starring Sean Penn as American guitarist Emmet Ray in the '30s... he claimed to be the 2nd best in the world after D.R. worth a look see.. |
Subject: RE: Django is 100 yrs ! From: M.Ted Date: 09 Jan 10 - 07:15 PM Howard Alden played the "Emmett Ray" parts for Sweet and Lowdown, accompanied by Bucky Pizzarelli, and he then taught Sean Penn how to do it for the camera. Frank is well aware of Howard, as well as his pals, Frank Vignola and Jimmy Bruno number among the best guitarists around today who follow in the Eddie Lang/Django Reinhart/Barney Kessel tradition(and who all played banjo first)-- Again, American audiences don't know Django, but American guitarists do-- |
Subject: RE: Django is 100 yrs ! From: Donuel Date: 09 Jan 10 - 07:25 PM If Django had another 10 years for every finger he lost he'd be 80 |
