Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 10 Jan 10 - 01:55 PM I'm often asked why I, a British-born naturalized Canadian, write so many songs with American themes. I'm sure there are more reasons than I consciously recognize, but one important reality is that I am married to an American from Minnesota, and through him and his family have come to know and love the Mississippi River. |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: GUEST Date: 10 Jan 10 - 10:06 PM Hi Y'all It's been ages since I visited the 'cat butI hope you'll still talk to me! :) Had a ball putting these videos together and I guess we're kinda thinking this is one of the ways it's done now....put your music out there for everyone to enjoy free and maybe they'll pick up your CDs or come and see you live. These two songs are brand new and not available on any CD at the moment but will be down the road soon, we hope. They continue to show what a wonderful songwriter Joanne is. Paul Mills |

Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 12 Jan 10 - 10:50 AM To those in the Montreal area: Do you know of some people and/or places I could send these links to in hopes of maybe finding some club or house concert work for Paul and me? So far, Crabtree&Mills has never played in Quebec. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. |

Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 13 Jan 10 - 01:52 AM Hi everyone: At six pm my beloved Mac Powerbook blew up and I was left incommunicado until my kind husband lent me this foreign-feeling but very useful PC! Note to Open Mike: In 2008 Paul and I wrote a song that has a Piliated Woodpecker in it. The year before that I wrote Flight of Fancy, which begins thus: Birds fly high, they've got places to be Stop and build a nest in the top of a tree I'm flying too, my nesting days are through I wanna take a flight of fancy with you More at www.joannecrabtree.com |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: Little Neophyte Date: 13 Jan 10 - 09:15 AM Hey Joanne, congratulations! The videos are wonderful! I love how Waterfall turned out with the images blended throughout the song. Adds another dimension to your powerful lyrics. You both look relaxed and natural. You did a great job! Banjo Bonnie |

Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 14 Jan 10 - 12:10 AM Paul is busy with a project in Halifax this week and has no idea what Dame-Edna-esque visuals you lot are conjuring up! One good thread drift deserves another: I'm thrilled with my new toy - a MacBook Pro. It has a back-lit keyboard so I can write songs in the dark!!! |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: Beer Date: 14 Jan 10 - 12:12 AM Halifax! My place of living. wish i was still there. Ad. |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: GUEST,999 Date: 14 Jan 10 - 12:26 AM I too write songs in the dark, but because I use pen and paper I keep the lights on and pretend. I live a confused life. |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 14 Jan 10 - 02:09 AM Pen, pencil, computer - I scribble everywhere, including in the margins of my crossword puzzles. Does anyone else here feel guilty when they're not writing? |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: Big Mick Date: 14 Jan 10 - 03:07 PM I have been a bit overwhelmed lately with a building project, Mom and Dad, a graduating high school senior and her party, as well as her college apps/aid, and a performing schedule that seems to be taking on a life of its own. But I am very happy I checked in at the Mudcat to chime in on this one. I heard Waterfalls while I was in Toronto for a week working on mixdown and overdubs on the new Conklin Ceili Band CD. I fell in love with it immediately and determined that it would be purloined forthwith. The only problem is that I can't play like Paul(very few can) and I can't sing like Joanne. Other than that, I think I can have a hit with it!! Seriously, I agree with my friend with the numbered name, that this is one of the finest combination of lyrics, tune, and instrumental artistry I have heard in a long while. But I am luckier than most of you in that I get to see these folks fairly regularly, so I knew what was coming. Black Dirt Blues demonstrates exactly how versatile a lyric writer Joanne is. Who did the camera work? It is wonderful, and the editing was spot on as well. If you want a rare and real treat, do all you can to book these two into a local venue. I was privileged to see them at a small Toronto club with Peter T. in early October. There is a musical connection between them that is palpable. Combine that with their red hot musical skills, some amazing lyrics, and the fact that they clearly love performing together, and you have a concert you will not soon forget. I always consider myself to be a pretty lucky guy in that I have had the good fortune to be around a lot of stellar players, performers, and songwriters. I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed a concert more than Crabtree and Mills. You just leave it feeling great. In those videos, you can see why. Be well, my friends. I hope to see you both soon. |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 14 Jan 10 - 04:35 PM Wow, Mick, you sure have lots going on right now (but then, you always do!)! A big congratulations on being one of the artists who contributed to the success of the Grammy-nominated Utah Phillips tribute album. Thanks for finding the time to write that glowing recommendation of our songs and our shows. Fyi, the only people involved in the making of the videos were Paul and me. I wrote the songs and he did everything else. Well, I did get to say, "I like that photo better than that one," a few times during the editing phase, but really it was pretty much all him. |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 15 Jan 10 - 02:29 PM Thanks to all who took the time to comment on Waterfalls and Black Dirt Blues. I very much appreciate your encouragement, and I will be looking for bookings in and around Montreal and Grand Rapids when I get home from my jamming weekend in rural Ontario. Blessings on you all!!! Joanne |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: GUEST,999 Date: 16 Jan 10 - 02:21 PM This deserves another run. |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 17 Jan 10 - 04:45 PM Just back from a weekend in the country with thirty jammers who like to stay up all night ... well ... jamming! Lots of fun, and I think it's probably like those Mudcat "getaways" Rick Fielding used to describe so fondly to me. The folks really liked playing along and singing with me on Waterfalls. |
Subject: RE: Crabtree&Mills on YouTube From: balladeer Date: 18 Jan 10 - 11:04 PM I'm sorry to see this thread come to an end (even though everything always does!). Reading your positive responses to our little "living-room" project was a real thrill. Thank you all for the kind words and the booking leads. Joanne Crabtree |
