"In many ways, {slim} Whitman and {Sonny} James were kindred spirits. Neither smoked nor drank, and both bad an aversion to working those honky-tonk crowds that did. But unlike James, Whitman faced the responsibilities of meeting a weekly payroll. To keep the band working, he had to accept the roadhouse and honky-tonk bookings he hoped to avoid. This posed a moral dilemma for James. 'Slim, I'm not comfortable doing that,' James told him. 'All my family ever played was theaters and auditoriums and schoolhouses.'

Although sympathetic to his front man's concerns, Whitman encouraged James to stick it out. 'Spend a couple of weeks with me,' he pleaded. 'Maybe I can work this out.' But as those club dates grew closer, James reluctantly gave Whitman his notice."

Sonny James was a great singer and a pretty fine guitar player as well. Teddy Reidel, who tunes a lot of pianos in this area and once had an opportunity to work with some of the Memphis and Nashville greats, has good things to say about Sonny. Teddy can still tickle a piano keyboard with the best of them. Have to admit though that Hank Snow was my absolute favorite. Have more of his lps and song folios than anyone else.

Thanks Gene for the look. Sonny was a great singer as well as a writer. Many favorites but I have to go with Young Love as my choice. I know you didn't ask but thought I'd mention it anyway. Saw him along with Hank Snow in Montreal in the early seventies.
