Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Backwoodsman Date: 14 Jan 10 - 05:45 AM They don't have a website Tania (come on, this is The Backwoods we're talking about!) LOL! But they have a cosy room, a nice warm fire in the grate, good nosh, nice friendly people, and a few 'catters on occasion! What more could anyone want? |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Leadfingers Date: 13 Jan 10 - 08:38 PM Cant find a Louth Web site , but they are listed in http://www.folktalk.co.uk/talk2.htm |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tania Date: 13 Jan 10 - 08:28 PM I was just looking for details for Louth, so this is a timely thread - thanks! Anybody know if they have their own webpage? |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tim Leaning Date: 13 Jan 10 - 04:28 AM Doug we made a minute examination of the one way system...TWICE! Yes the pub is on the left if you are approaching it conventionally. I am however more than ready to be guided by Sooz. ANd punished when I need to be yes punished and chided. LOL It was good and no shouty PA. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Nick Date: 12 Jan 10 - 08:31 PM Thoroughly enjoyable evening and do pass my thanks to the organisers and people who were there. If I find myself in the vicinity on a Tuesday - sorry a second or fourth Tuesday - I'll pop in again. It also reminded me what a small world it is as I met a couple of people I've met before and met another person who I share a mutual acquaintance here in the York area. And nice to see and hear you and Jenny again, Tim. I have already written half of 'Self Deprecation Blues' in my head on the way home and will sing it to you sometime ;) If any of you in turn are in our part of the world do pop in on any Wednesday you would hopefully be made as welcome - Thompsons Arms Flaxton See you again sometime Nick |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 12 Jan 10 - 07:20 PM Erm...Tim, From Grimsby, I never wanted to go left at the traffic lights. That would take me away from the Wheatsheaf. In the one-way street, the pub is on the left, not the right. I think I'll follow Sooz's directions. They're less confusing, ?;-) DC |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tim Leaning Date: 12 Jan 10 - 06:49 PM From Grimsby don't go left at the lights! bear right then first right past the church your car will fit then just take the rights turns as they come and the pub is on the right. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tim Leaning Date: 12 Jan 10 - 06:46 PM "Louth FOlk CLub,What is it like? Its bloody lovely thanks for having us in,for all that lovely music, songs, jokes, stories and letting us play. Safe journey Nick it was good to hear you again. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Sooz Date: 12 Jan 10 - 03:01 PM From Grimsby, you would be better continuing on the A16 to the second roundabout (A631) rather than going down by the Lady of Shallott. Then you are going te right way along the one way street! |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 12 Jan 10 - 12:54 PM Wholeheartedly endorse what everyone else has said. I only go there about two or three times a year, as it clashes with another event closer to home, but I have always been made most welcome. The biggest problem I found, the first time I went, was how to find it. I knew it was next to the church but it's in a one way street. Coming from Grimsby, it's No Entry where I wanted to turn right at the traffic lights. I turned right a bit further on but missed the sharp right turn to get back to the pub. I ended up going out of town, heading for Heaven knows where, on roads that were too narrow to turn round. Got there in the end and it was well worth the effort. DC |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 Jan 10 - 10:14 AM Unfortunately, I won't be there as I'm travelling t'other way to The Great Metrolopiss, Lunnun, early in the morning. Shame. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Carol Date: 12 Jan 10 - 08:57 AM Yes Nick I'll second that, although it's a while since I've been - that's 'cos it's a long way from home. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 Jan 10 - 08:25 AM If you're coming in from Lincoln direction, you drive into the town from the big roundabout, keep left where the road forks and it's on the left when the church is in front of you. Go through the narrow gateway and there's a car-park at the back. You needn't be overawed Nick, they're a very friendly lot. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Nick Date: 12 Jan 10 - 08:16 AM Well hopefully I'll get there if my drive from Essex goes ok and the timing is right - 8:30 start is it and hopefully easy to find? If I'm not too overawed by the company I'll sing some songs if there's room and if not I'll just listen. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Leadfingers Date: 12 Jan 10 - 07:00 AM Only visited Louth once (So Far) with Jacqui C - A VERY pleasant evening . |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 Jan 10 - 06:49 AM Even a bean-counter needs a tea-break occasionally! |

Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 Jan 10 - 05:50 AM Don't be so modest, Tim - you're not 'arf bad yourself! |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tim Leaning Date: 12 Jan 10 - 05:40 AM True. Now if you are giving tips on how to sing..... that would be worth knowing too. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 Jan 10 - 04:56 AM Behave Tim! :-) I might be a guitar-nerd, but even you have to admit that mine always sound nice! (It's all about the BWM String-Maintenance Code, don'cha know!). :-) |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Rasener Date: 12 Jan 10 - 04:55 AM Sorry I stand corrected,by the ones that know :-) |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tim Leaning Date: 12 Jan 10 - 04:38 AM But remember there will be a Guitar inspection and you will need to pass the BWM string maintainance code. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 Jan 10 - 04:33 AM Give it a try Nick, a very nice, friendly club in a lovely little room. And the grub's good (and free!). Anything goes musically. BTW, it's not a singaround - it's floorspots, usually 2 songs in each half per performer although that's subject to adjustment depending on numbers/time. Among the regulars are Shanty Jack, and Dave & Julie Evardson - fantastic Lincs. songwriter ('The North Wall', 'The Forty Thieves' et al). I can thoroughly recommend it. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tim Leaning Date: 12 Jan 10 - 04:14 AM Supper? Hmmmmmmmm. Twas on the eve of Michaelmas unto the shore was bound an herd of Cornish pastymen unto the tin mines found. and you could hear the Tommy knockers miles out at sea Where sailors sang of suppers cooked at Louth F.C. FOr free. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Sooz Date: 12 Jan 10 - 04:01 AM Extremely friendly and a good supper provided by the landlord. You will get a spot (it isn't a singaround). Enjoy. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Tim Leaning Date: 12 Jan 10 - 03:45 AM Well Fence makes his own songs and Shanty Jack is a decent bloke as well ,I cant see them being less than welcoming to a stranger from foreign parts(not french) . And who knows they might pay a return visit to Flaxton one day. |
Subject: RE: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Rasener Date: 11 Jan 10 - 05:22 PM Louth is a small excellent singaround club. Just let the person running it know that you would like to sing when you arrive. The Fence who is a mudcatter is part of the committee. |
Subject: Louth folk club - what's it like? From: Nick Date: 11 Jan 10 - 05:08 PM I am going to be coming back from Essex tomorrow and thought I might stop for a sing and a listen somewhere between Essex and Yorkshire. I notice that Louth is on tomorrow night so thought I'd ask if people know it. What is Louth like? Is it very formal or is it somewhere where I will get a turn? What sort of music is played - very traditional/unaccompanied/mixed? Do people join in or is it a keep quiet and listen? A lot depends on weather and work but I just had it in the back of my mind and thought I might plan ahead. |
