They don't have a website Tania (come on, this is The Backwoods we're talking about!) LOL!

But they have a cosy room, a nice warm fire in the grate, good nosh, nice friendly people, and a few 'catters on occasion! What more could anyone want?

Doug we made a minute examination of the one way system...TWICE!
Yes the pub is on the left if you are approaching it conventionally.
I am however more than ready to be guided by Sooz.
ANd punished when I need to be yes punished and chided.

Thoroughly enjoyable evening and do pass my thanks to the organisers and people who were there. If I find myself in the vicinity on a Tuesday - sorry a second or fourth Tuesday - I'll pop in again.

It also reminded me what a small world it is as I met a couple of people I've met before and met another person who I share a mutual acquaintance here in the York area.

And nice to see and hear you and Jenny again, Tim. I have already written half of 'Self Deprecation Blues' in my head on the way home and will sing it to you sometime ;)

If any of you in turn are in our part of the world do pop in on any Wednesday you would hopefully be made as welcome -

Erm...Tim,

From Grimsby, I never wanted to go left at the traffic lights. That would take me away from the Wheatsheaf.

In the one-way street, the pub is on the left, not the right.


I think I'll follow Sooz's directions. They're less confusing,

From Grimsby don't go left at the lights! bear right then first right past the church your car will fit then just take the rights turns as they come and the pub is on the right.

From Grimsby, you would be better continuing on the A16 to the second roundabout (A631) rather than going down by the Lady of Shallott. Then you are going te right way along the one way street!

Wholeheartedly endorse what everyone else has said. I only go there about two or three times a year, as it clashes with another event closer to home, but I have always been made most welcome.

The biggest problem I found, the first time I went, was how to find it. I knew it was next to the church but it's in a one way street. Coming from Grimsby, it's No Entry where I wanted to turn right at the traffic lights. I turned right a bit further on but missed the sharp right turn to get back to the pub. I ended up going out of town, heading for Heaven knows where, on roads that were too narrow to turn round.

Got there in the end and it was well worth the effort.

If you're coming in from Lincoln direction, you drive into the town from the big roundabout, keep left where the road forks and it's on the left when the church is in front of you. Go through the narrow gateway and there's a car-park at the back.

You needn't be overawed Nick, they're a very friendly lot.

Well hopefully I'll get there if my drive from Essex goes ok and the timing is right - 8:30 start is it and hopefully easy to find?

If I'm not too overawed by the company I'll sing some songs if there's room and if not I'll just listen.

Give it a try Nick, a very nice, friendly club in a lovely little room. And the grub's good (and free!). Anything goes musically.

BTW, it's not a singaround - it's floorspots, usually 2 songs in each half per performer although that's subject to adjustment depending on numbers/time.

Among the regulars are Shanty Jack, and Dave & Julie Evardson - fantastic Lincs. songwriter ('The North Wall', 'The Forty Thieves' et al).

I can thoroughly recommend it.

Extremely friendly and a good supper provided by the landlord. You will get a spot (it isn't a singaround). Enjoy.

Well Fence makes his own songs and Shanty Jack is a decent bloke as well ,I cant see them being less than welcoming to a stranger from foreign parts(not french) .
And who knows they might pay a return visit to Flaxton one day.

Louth is a small excellent singaround club.

Just let the person running it know that you would like to sing when you arrive.

The Fence who is a mudcatter is part of the committee.

I am going to be coming back from Essex tomorrow and thought I might stop for a sing and a listen somewhere between Essex and Yorkshire. I notice that Louth is on tomorrow night so thought I'd ask if people know it.

What is Louth like? Is it very formal or is it somewhere where I will get a turn? What sort of music is played - very traditional/unaccompanied/mixed? Do people join in or is it a keep quiet and listen?

A lot depends on weather and work but I just had it in the back of my mind and thought I might plan ahead.
