Musica en Temps de Jaume I, Licanus CDM 0825, a 3-CD set in a 200-page finely printed and illustrated book, music of Capella de Ministrers conducted by Carles Magraner, is a collection of religious, secular (troubador, love and Love-Song) and Moorish song of the 13th-14th C. in Spain, specifically Valencia. All lyrics are fully translated in Valencian, Spanish, French and English.
Short histories of the time, the conquest, the sacred polyphony, the troubadour repertoire, and a section called "Garden Lost," laments by Moors who went into exile in North Africa, are clearly and simply written.
Anyone interested in the music of this period should get this collection. It is beautifully performed and was an eye-opener to me.

One paragraph from the text: "....The Andalusian poets exiled in North Africa remembered and mourned the lost mother country, as they had been received in the court of the king of Tunisia, who had not been able to do anything to help Valencia. The gardens of the Ruzafa, the Guadalaviar and Jicar Rivers, the cities of Valencia, Onda, .... which they would never again see, were invaded by blond-haired, blue-eyed Barbarians coming from the north, with Jaqmu, the tyrant of Barcelona at the front, as he was known in Arabic texts. Yet they could not conceive that this great misfortune had happened to them. A refined and sophisticated civilization, lovers of beauty and poetry, had been defeated by dirty and barely civilized Barbarians, unfaithful worshipers of the Cross, who knew nothing of the cleaning of the soul and the body. ..........."

The album is available from Crotchet in the UK,
It is not listed by Amazon. It seems rather pricey, about $US50.00, but not for 3cds and book.
