Since Tom is currently held captive at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, I'll have to make the usual announcement.

Third Saturday of the Month, January 16, 2010 gathering at The Press Room, Daniel St., Portsmouth, NH -- 3:30 to 7:30.

Tom, alas, will probably not be there. I will be, at least for awhile, but there should be more than a quorum and enough momentum to make for a lively raising of the rafters in song.

We will be travelling back from Boston that day and so I won't make it.

How long I stay depends entirely on how much I still have left to do at home (and whether I can put it off).

I have to admit, I really don't feel much like singing right now -- but I think I really need to and to be in the presence of the kind of musical energy that this (and the weekly) session generates.

Maybe my Secret Santa likes to sing sea music.... ;-)

Linn-

I'm still resident in Brooklyn and will be attending the Saturday chantey session at the Seamen's Church in the South Street Seaport area. Maybe we can swap choruses long distance.

Last evening we had a song party at the Alison Kelley residence, swapping songs from the Appalachians to the Seven Seas. Today I meet for cheese and onions at McSorley's Old Ale House with old shellback Frank Woerner. I don't seem to have much trouble keeping busy. And the weather looks reasonable for my trip back to Maine on Monday.

Best to everyone!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, there should be enough regulars to make a quorum. Sometimes it's an even better session if there are fewer people. (We've proved this again and again.)

By the way, it looks as if this latest medical snafu won't interfere with Tom being on track towards voice restoration.

Linn-

Yes, smaller sessions can be very enjoyable.

Glad to hear that Tom is still scheduled for follow-up voice restoration. I can hardly wait to hear him grumbling again.

As for me, I had a nice extended lunch with Frank Woerner yesterday at McSorley's Old Ale House, one of the few places that still exists "as is" from 50 years ago or longer. There's still sawdust on the floor, the operating potbelly stove, the cat (although younger than the one I saw last time) napping on the bench behind the stove, the gallery of images on the wall scanning the centuries, the "stuff" pilled up on the shelves behind the bar, the old icebox which still functions, and the massive urinals in the back; it's all still there. We had several rounds of dark ale, cheese & onions & crackers, and later some sandwiches on a choice of pumpernickel or pumpernickel (I chose pumpernickel). And we had a great time comparing notes on how we got involved in singing sea songs.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, still resident in NYC.

Kendall and Jacqui are due back from Boston on Saturday. I am Seamus sitting so it is not likely I will be there.
Sorry. It's been a while.

But a bunch o' the local regulars and at least one singer from further afield will be there.

I woke up this morning with an early 1960s song in my head -- "Blue, Navy Blue" ("I'm as blue as I can be / For my steady boy said 'Ship, ahoy' / And joined the Na-ay-vy.")

Sorry, I also woke up with my legs, ankles and knees aching much more than usual. And my scrambled egg breakfast didn't sit well. And now I feel like dog crap. Don't know whether I'm coming down with a bug or if I'm just way too tired -- from waking up way too early this morning and/or too much physical labor (no, not wood schlepping).

I just don't think I should drag myself to The Press Room -- I'm sure you can have a grand time even without my supervision. I'm not going to visit Tom, either, except on the phone. And the other errands on my list can wait until after work tomorrow or Monday. I hope.

Still got stuff to do around here, but I think I'm going to try to take it a bit easier and try to shake this.

Well after a superb bowel movement and flossing my dentures...we have an ETA time of arrival at the Press Room of 3:15 pm.
Looking forward to a good sing and have a few others in tow.

Shannon Aldrich put a photo of the shanty session on Facebook a couple hours ago. From it I could tell Pete and Joanne Souza and Gardi Winchester were at the session. And Marty Stock. Couldn't tell who else was there, but it looked like Janie MacIntyre and Keven Seuffert were in the back booth, so Bruce MacIntyre and Mark Ryer were probably there as well.

I hope someone posts a recap.

Me, the McIntyres, Mark & Keven, Brian, a guy with him I don't know who played a guitar, a guy with a bodhran (I was told he is a Marine, so it wasn't wise to mess with the drum) Peter & Joanne (with a new, beautiful sounding flute), Marty, Rose and her Morris machine (button box), Gardi, Alex, Justine, Chris, and I KNOW I'm forgetting people.

It was a good session. Although people at the bar were watching football, there was little obnoxious noise. Good healthy chorus singing, and nothing to complain about other than Tom & Linn not being able to make it.

Jeri-

Glad to hear that you folks kept the place lively.

The chantey session last evening in South Street (NYC) was literally bursting at the seams. There were about 40 participants, plus a dozen sketchers who I last met from last weekend's Chantey Blast in Mystic. At one point we had to open the patio door to cool the place down! Here's a link to some pixs that Jan's son Erik took of the session: Click here!

The South Street chantey sessions take place once a month, usually the 2nd or 3rd Saturday, depending what else is going on, starting at 8 pm sharp and ending around 10:30 pm. The location is the Seamen's Church, 35 Water St. in the South Street Seaport area. Folks are friendly!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Lots of singers.....lots of fun...less traffic than New York, too,
Mendall Korse did a lot of medieval chants and a very interesting song about teeth. This other lovely woman in attendance who appeared to be French, Geri' Curlew, sang some amazing birding songs. Sari Mullivan belted out a few great gospel songs about sheep and headless statues......and this very odd guy with a beard kept singing songs about single malt as well as finishing off a bottle of Laphroaig in double shot fashion. Kept asking everyone....where's Tom...all session long....and he knew that Linn would be learning a new political song in short order. Who was there in actuality..... well that's another story and will be told when Tom and Linn are in place once again at the Press Room. Wellness and cheers to all.....it was a fine sing and fun afternoon.

Peter-

It's good of you to provide an alternative overview of the session.

Here's to you as well!
