Art just called to ask me to let you all know he is offline until his son can get down to redo his telephone line to his PC. His phone wasn't working, yesterday, but seems to be okay, now. He's not sure when Chris will make it there, so won't be able to respond to emails, etc. but he will answer the phone.:-)

Thanks,

kat

It would be so easy to set him up with a wireless network, I'm sure there is space for a card in that computer of his. Is he still using dialup? I wonder if any of his neighbors have an unprotected wireless connection he could tap into for a faster connection? (If I use my laptop in the living room or bedroom it sometimes logs onto my next door neighbor's wireless network. I need to get over there and fix that for her.)

He is still on dialup. I doubt any of his neighbours have the dosh for wireless and doubt if he does, either. Good idea, though!

I spoke with Art, last night. He sounded pretty good. He and Carol were able to go to a nearby park area where there was a raptor count going with presentations by speakers and such. He said it was so foggy they didn't see any eagles or anything, though.

They are looking in to getting a guy who makes house calls to come in and fix their connection. I *think* he meant this week, maybe, as he was talking about trying to listen to the Grammys, but I told him it was video anyway, so even if he gets back online it would take too long on dialup.

I promised to call him as soon as we know, unless someone else calls before me. Just want to make sure he is told the results asap and I do plan to watch them online.

I just noticed this thread.

Thanks, folks, for holding the fort!

As it turned out, old friend Carl Stark pulled through our town yesterday and made the needed repairs---and I'm back. Feels very nice to hear your cyber-voices once again. Carl and I go way back to the old No Exit coffeehouse times---and the Green Dragon Inn days in Wisconsin. He is a prince of a fellow.

MAEVE, Carl is also the one who took your web-obtained book seller info on my father's 1946 book---and picked it up for me!!! It's a much better read than I thought it was back when I was young and angry as all hell with my father for abandoning us by passing away in 1946 when I was five years old---two days after Christmas

BUT NOW I am really liking the man I am getting to know, actually for the first time ever, in the pages of this book. I take it that this was the only copy of the book available anywhere in the USA. The book was called A Metallurgist Views Europe--from the beaches to Berlin. The official name of the group he was with was the OVERSEAS SCRAP ADVISRY COMMITTEE. They were charged by the U.S. War Department with surveying ALL of the scrap metals the USA had in Europe---and then recommending what to do with it---sell it, bring it back home, sink it at sea, give it away, whatever.

For me, the best part of the book is how he made the entire trip come alive with details of personal interactions, politics, social conflicts, geographical value judgments of one country to another; plus conflicts of rank and status---even menu descriptions. Sometimes it was K-rations and sometimes it was wonderful meals---all served by German prisoners of war. The tension was always there throughout. It was two months after the end of the fighting; and landmines were being exploded all around them constantly.

Also, with me pushing 69 years of age, I have, thankfully, gotten rid of the baggage I carried through my growing up years---feelings picked up from relatives, etc.

Truly, I'm enjoying knowing this man who I've never had many actual memories of.

Maeve, thanks again for finding the book!!

Love,

Art
(P.S.---The descriptions of their visits to Dachau concentration camp just months after it's liberation was harrowing and vivid in it's stark clarity. The prisoners were "liberated"---but the blood stains and the stench of the crematoriums was ever present and stayed with all of them long after.)

You make me very happy, Art. It is a great joy to know I could help a little in your reconnection to your dad. I am missing mine terribly right now; your delight eases the pain.

Love to you too,

maeve

Now isn't it nice to have Art back with us again?

Insights in to the lives of your parents are always wonderful. When my Dad died I found a marvelous list of "what to carry in an air raid" that he had clearly composed when bored one night when on fire watch.

Classic and another window into a fascinating man.

Best wishes,

Peter

I faintly remember you from high school and the one reunion I reluctantly went to - maybe the 20th or something then vowed never to return. Glad to see you did so well - and are treasured by so many.

I am up in Evanston, President of Off Campus Writers Workshop (200 writers, 65 year old group)in Winnetka, hosting weekly speakers on some topic of writing from Sept. through May. I am a published poet, writer and teach creative writing.

I was really interested to read about your Dad's book - I wondered if you could share the title of it. Thanks.
